A miniature impact tool in which a cam and cam follower assembly is utilized for moving a striker backward by converting rotary motion of a drive shaft to a linear motion. The striker is in contact with a spring/guide pin (plunger) assembly and is moved away from a surface to be struck during a portion of the rotation cycle of the cam. On further rotation the cam surface is cut away and spring action drives the striker forward, causing impact of a cutting tool (chisel) against a workpiece. A plurality of cam lobe surfaces provides predetermined and reproducible impact forces of the cutting tool on the workpiece, even during vibration of the tool. To minimize damage to the cam and cam follower when the tool is over speeded, an elastomeric cam or a cushioning coating or sleeve prevents adverse contact (such as metal-to-metal contact) between the cam and cam follower.

Excessive wear of the drive shaft is eliminated using a specific design of a shelf upon which the striker moves, as well as a sleeve bearing around the drive shaft in the area of possible wear. The striker is provided with a guide structure (such as a recess) into which the nose of the plunger fits in order to provide controlled guidance of the striker in its longitudinal movement. The output shaft of the tool accepts removable collets of varying shapes in order to accommodate chisel tools having different shank geometries and sizes.

A braiding mandrel for use in making cable grips and strain relief assemblies is described. The mandrel has a rod along its axis. Enclosing the rod, along its length, are hook-ring elements separated by cylindrical spacers. The hook-ring elements are flat rings with prongs extending outward. The prongs are bent upward to form hooks on which wire is wrapped to form the cable grips and strain relief assemblies.

A towable broadband submarine antenna system for deployment in the ocean ing operation comprises an antenna element including a metallic termination tip and a length of single conductor buoyant cable. A broadband amplifier connects to the antenna element and provides separate paths for the VLF/LF and the HF/VHF signals with amplification provided only to the HF/VHF signals. The signal from the broadband amplifier is further transmitted on a coaxial cable.

A spokewheel convertible buoyant cable antenna is comprised of a multipliy of machined metal and molded or extruded plastic components. These parts are designed to be quickly assembled in such a way as to be watertight at all practical depths. They have sufficient tensile strength so as to be towed at reasonable speeds, either on the surface or submerged. The assembly may be disassembled in the field, for repairs. The design also allows it to be easily inserted into a conventional XU-4 type antenna thereby doubling the usefulness of the standard BCA system when this spokewheel capability is needed. The spokewheel version may be quickly converted back to the standard XU-4 version.

Broadband in-line amplifier for submarine antennas

A semi-foamed polyethylene tape for use in the molding of foamed jacket pethylene cables. After tumble mixing low density foaming polyethylene, ethylene vinyl acetate co-polymer and polyethylene color concentrate, the tape is extruded on a thermoplastic extruder having a maddox mixing screw that effectively mixes polyethylene compounds and a slot die with a suitable opening dimension. The tape is then quenched. By controlling manufacturing variables the tape is foamed to 40% to 50% of its maximum. The tape is then foamed to 100% maximum during the manufacturing of a cable assembly.

Method of making cable assembly for use in an antenna element assembly

A flexible coaxial connector assembly is used on buoyant cable antenna syms. It comprises a retainer assembly that has threads mating with a bellows assembly. Components that mate in a flexible manner are enclosed by the bellows. An electrical wire passes through these flexible mating components and terminates in a contact pin. The contact pin mates with an amplifier contact socket assembly.

Demountable coaxial electrical connector for in-line amplifiers

A termination tip for submarine buoyant cable antenna systems can quickly converted from grounding to insulating and vice versa any number of times. The nosepiece assembly fits over a pin contact of wire and is screwed onto a connector that holds the wire. An O-ring between the wire and the nosepiece assembly seals out seawater. The nosepiece assembly is either insulating or conducting depending on the desired configuration.

Convertible termination tip for submarine buoyant cable antenna system

A flexible coupling assembly for a radio antenna of a submarine buoyant ce antenna system is connected in a cable line that retains the characteristics of the cable as regards the outside diameter, flexibility tensile strength and electrical continuity. The assembly comprises flexible co-axial connectors at each end keyed to an insulator that is press fit in a transition piece. The transition piece is press fit into the tubing by barbed type annular rings machined into the transition piece. Between the insulators and enclosed by the tubing are plastic pieces connected by a coil spring.

Antenna coupling assembly

A cable terminator assembly for a coaxial cable includes a housing having a raided extension affixed thereto for transferring tensile strength from a cable to the housing and braided extension. An inner cylindrical piece is swaged to the housing for holding the braided extension in place. A dielectric clamp with a closure ring, flat locking washer and cap complete the components within the termination. The washer is keyed to the housing and, together with the housing, clamp the stranded cable conductor. The keying prevents turning of the mating components so that the stranded cable conductor will not be damaged. The clamping of the strands makes electrical contact between the strands and the assembly. The dielectric clamp is forced to bite into the dielectric material of the coaxial cable. This provides a firm mechanical hold.

Coaxial termination for cable in-line electronic applications

A co-axial radio frequency flexible connector system for use in traversing hrough and/or over sheaves, hull fittings, cable handling equipment and machinery, and reeling operations. The system comprises a bellows enclosing a spring assembly. The bellows provides a fixed length electrical path which remains the same during flexing, tension and compression. The system is radially rigid to inhibit rotation of components. Electrical contact engagement is enhanced by having the components under a pre-determined amount of compression when assembled and in use.

Flexible co-axial connector for cable in-line electronics

A housing assembly taking the place of strength members in cables for insing electrical and/or electronic equipment. The assembly comprises cylindrical end terminations interlocking with cable termination pieces. The end terminations have strength members attached. The strength members comprise steel wire strands woven or braided in a basket-weave configuration. The strength members are attached to the end termination pieces by swaging an internal into an outside sleeve, and at the same time sandwiching the strength members between the sleeves. A flexible tube is inserted in the housing assembly to serve as a sealing surface for external water pressure.
