Planetary gear units

In a gear mounting having a spindle (10,16,31) extending generally normal to a carrier (5,13,29), the spindle is cantilevered back from the outer end of a tie-bolt (4,14,30) and is permitted limited axial excursions to adapt itself to the tooth loading. It is particularly suited to mounting planets in an epicyclic gear. The outer end of the spindle is clamped between the head of the tie-bolt and a tubular compression member (9,15,32) of lesser axial extent than the spindle, and between that member and the carrier there is a bush (12,17,33), also in the compression chain. The tubular member is more flexible than the bush and the bolt can also flex to allow the axial excursions. The tubular member may be integral with the bush or separate from it, but in either case the geometry of the various components can be such that easy tolerances are permissible to facilitate assembly. However, when the tie-bolt is tensioned distortions occur to close radial clearances and centralize the components. An application of this mounting is to an epicyclic gear in which there are double planets whose parts are of different pitch to give an added reduction.

A turbine engine construction comprises an accessory drive mechanism in which accessories are mounted circumferentially around the turbine casing. The engine includes a planetary gear mechanism driven by a shaft extending axially outward from compressor and turbine sections of the engine, and forwardly of the air intake in the turbine casing. Accessory drive assembly includes a planetary gear mechanism having a ring gear exposed through circumferentially spaced apertures in the turbine casing to driven gears extending outwardly from accessory housings secured to the periphery of the turbine casing.

A torque measuring device is provided for measuring the engine torque of an engine having an output shaft and connecting through a gear box having a planetary gear arrangement to a load. The torque measuring device comprises a hub having an axis and supporting the stationary member of the planetary gear arrangement coaxial with the axis of the hub. An annulus is secured to and supports the gear box housing and is also secured to the hub by a plurality of circumferentially spaced spokes extending between the annulus and the hub and tangent to some circle coaxial to the hub. As the torque applied to the planetary gear arrangement increases, the hub rotates from its at rest position deflecting the spokes in proportion to the reaction torque of the stationary members. An arm extending outwardly from the hub cooperates with a position transducer to measure the amount of rotation of the hub with respect to the annulus and thus the torque on the planetary gear arrangement.

The traction unit comprises two pairs or sets of two or more capstans. The capstans of each pair or set have a common axis and the axes of each pair or set are in spaced apart parallel relationship. One of the capstans of each pair or set is larger in diameter than the other or one of the other capstans of the respective pair or set of capstans. Cycloidal gears, preferably an epicycloidal gear drive, is provided between the capstans of each pair or at least two of the capstans of each respective set, with one of the capstans of one pair or set being strapped to a capstan of the other pair or set of capstans or a differential coupling/load-power transmission is provided between a capstan of one pair or set and a capstan of the other pair or set.
