A nonlinear editing system for audio, video and/or other source materials comprises a system to define at least one time line representing the edit, the time line being represented in the editing system as an operator graph. The operator graph includes operators, representing sources and time-based effects, and time varying connections therebetween. For each period of the defined time line wherein the connections do not change, a expression tree comprising a simplified representation of the operators and the connections required to render that portion of the time line is extracted. Each expression tree can be examined to ensure that all of the required sources and/or connections are available to render that portion of the time line in real time and, if this is not the case, a determination can be made of which portions of the expression tree can be pre-rendered to an intermediate result, the intermediate result being substituted into expression tree to provide real time rendering.

A method and system for synchronizing modules associated with audiovisual devices, generally for use with a digital non-linear editor. A logical clock communicates information, including time and state (clock operating mode) information, to hardware and software modules through a synchronization port. The synchronization ports convert the time information into values recognizable by the module, and offset the time as needed to maintain synchronization. The state information may effect module commands for controlling audiovisual devices, such as rewind, playback and capture commands to tape players, timed such that various devices having different preparatory timing requirements are synchronized. State information, such as information indicating that a device is ready, may be returned by the modules. Video editing features such as scrubbing, looping and frame-stepping are supported by the mode information that is communicated between the clock and the synchronization ports.

Method and mechanism for synchronizing hardware and software modules

A method and system for representing hierarchical time-based data structures and to extract information therefrom comprises means to create a container, the container having one or more layers within which data elements are arranged along the container axis and to examine the container to produce virtual static graphs which represent active data elements and their interconnections within time durations represented within the container. The data elements in the container can change between active and inactive states with time and the connections between data elements can also change with time and the container represents this information. A set of constraints is defined for the container such that interconnections between data elements only occur between data elements in different layers. Specifically, a data element can only receive input from one or more other data elements which are in lower levels and a data element can only provide output to one or more data elements which are in higher levels. Transitions in a lower layer, representing changes in the active status of a data element, are propagated to each higher layer, such that a higher layer can never have less transitions that a lower layer. Each layer includes a record of which data element outputs are available in the layer at all times. When a request for information relating to the active data elements and their interconnections within a specified time period is received, the container is examined to produce a virtual static graph representing the minimal set of active data elements and their interconnections with the specified time.

Method and system for representing hierarchical time-based data

For use in composing and/or editing a multimedia work that include one or more clips, a technique for indicating an active state of the clip or portion thereof, indicating effects applied to a track or a clip, and indicating a plurality of effects applied to a track or to a clip. At least a portion of the work is graphically represented by one or more timelines on which are disposed one or more clips. An active portion of a clip is indicated by a colored bar that extends under that portion of the clip. Different types of transitions between clips are indicated by using one of different predetermined colors for the colored bar. Effects applied to a track are also represented by color bars that extend above the portion of the track to which the effects apply and are independent of changes to any clip disposed on the track. Predetermined colors are used to indicate the type or class of effect(s) applied. A plurality of effects applied to a clip or to a track are indicated by stacking the colored bars. The duration of the effect(s) are indicated by the relative length of these colored bars.
