Tips for use on a tunneling tool provide the ability to pull an implantable medical lead extension or catheter body through a subcutaneous tunnel. The tips may include a pin with a barb, where the barb is inserted within a compliant portion of a connector body of the lead extension or a catheter body to create an interference fit that allows the connector body or catheter body to be pulled through the tunnel. The tips may include a carrier that has a cavity for the connector body, where the tunneling is performed with the carrier present on the tunneling tool. A body is positioned within the cavity of the carrier to prevent tissue from snagging on and collecting within the carrier. The body may include a tip portion that performs the tunneling function. The carrier may also provide tunneling and/or may be attached to the tunneling tool during tunneling.

Tools and methods for implantation of implantable medical lead extensions or catheters

An apparatus configured to be placed about an implantable medical device having a face with a geometric center offset from a center of a recharge coil of the device includes first and second opposing major exterior surfaces, and a continuous exterior side surface joining the first and second opposing major exterior surfaces. A cavity is defined between, and an opening is formed by, the first and second major surfaces and the continuous side surface. The opening is in communication with the cavity and is configured to allow the device to access the cavity. An asymmetric region, adjacent to the cavity, is formed between a portion of the first and second major surfaces and the continuous side surface. The asymmetric region is configured to shift the geometric center of the combined apparatus and device, when the device is received in the cavity, towards the center of the recharge coil.

Accessory apparatus for improved recharging of implantable medical device

An implantable signal generator including electronic circuitry, a computer readable medium, and a connector block with a lumen which receives at least one lead. The at least one lead has at least one electrode connector while the lumen of the connector block has a plurality of contacts operably coupled to the electronic circuitry. The computer readable medium contains instructions for carrying out a process to determine at least one piece of information regarding the at least one lead within the lumen based on an electrode connector being electrically connected with the at least one of the plurality of contacts, and an electrode connector not being electrically connected with the at least one of the plurality of contacts.

Bi-directional connector assembly for an implantable medical device

An apparatus for managing a lead of an implantable medical device includes a lead retention element and a fixation element. The lead retention element has a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end. The lumen is configured to slidably receive the lead. The fixation element is configured to fix the lead retention element relative to the implantable medical device in an orientation orthogonal to a lead receptacle of the device such that the proximal end of the lead retention element is closer to an opening of the lead receptacle than the distal end of the retention element. The distal end of the lead retention element is configured to firmly engage the lead to resist proximal sliding of the lead in the lumen of the retention element once the lead has been moved distally through the lumen.

An external indicator device presents parameters associated with stimulation therapy generated by a pulse generator, which may be associated with an external or implantable stimulation device. In this manner, the external indicator device enables a user to visualize stimulation parameters without actually delivering stimulation therapy to a patient via implanted electrodes. The electrical stimulation parameters may include electrical amplitude levels, pulse widths, pulse rates, electrode combinations, and electrode polarities for stimulation generated by the pulse generator.

An implantable medical device includes a control circuit for controlling the operation of the device and for obtaining physiological data from a patient in which the medical device is implanted. The implanted device also includes a communication circuit for transmitting the physiological data to an external device. A first power source is coupled to the control circuit and provides power to the control circuit. A second power source is coupled to the communication circuit and provides power to the communication circuit.

An implantable drug delivery device is provided with a passive flow control device is provided in the form of a valve which may assume two flow states. Flow control is achieved by duty cycling the valve using a control module which generates appropriate signals in response to an input telemetry signal corresponding to a desired flow rate. In another embodiment, a passively controlled bolus delivery device is provided to deliver a bolus of drug in addition to normal dosage.

Passive flow control devices for implantable pumps

An apparatus and method that will allow for external communication, via an external programmer, for positive device identification and for retrieval of device or patient information stored by an implantable medical device with a depleted power source. The external programmer will deliver energy to a secondary power source located inside the implanted device using RF telemetry sufficient to charge up the secondary power source, e.g., a small capacitor. The capacitor will charge up immediately within milliseconds. Once the secondary power source is sufficiently charged, it can be used to power up a controller having the stored information in the implantable medical device. Once the controller is operational, the implanted device will transmit device and patient information to the external programmer via RF telemetry.

Apparatus and method for allowing immediate retrieval for information and identification from an implantable medical device having a depleted power source

The apparatus of the invention includes a sensor header and a sensor cover which are coupled to a prior art diaphragm assembly. The sensor header is provided with two piezoresistive silicon membrane strain gauges. One side of both strain gauges is exposed to fluid at upstream high pressure. The other side of the first strain gauge is exposed to fluid at downstream low pressure and the other side of the second strain gauge is exposed to the atmosphere. The sensor header is provided with a first port which is fluidly coupled to the first membrane strain gauge and extends to the surface of the header at a first location. The sensor header is provided with a second port which is fluidly coupled to the second membrane strain gauge and extends to the surface of the header at a second location. The sensor cover defines two isolated annular spaces around the sensor header, a first annular space around the first location and a second annular space around the second location. The first annular space is fluidly coupled to the low pressure port of a conventional diaphragm assembly and the second annular space is fluidly coupled to the atmosphere. The method of the invention is to provide two piezoresistive membrane strain gauges, expose a first side of each strain gauge to fluid at upstream high pressure, expose the second side of the first strain gauge to fluid at downstream low pressure, and expose the second side of the second strain gauge to atmospheric pressure.

Methods and apparatus for sensing differential and gauge static pressure

In accordance with the present invention, an implantable pump is programmed non-invasively by means of a programmer that communicates flow rate information by means of radio frequency telemetry or other methods of non-invasive telemetry. The programmer also supplies power to the implantable pump during programming. The implanted rate-adjustable pump that receives rate information and power by telemetry preferably does not include a battery or any other type of internal power supply, relying only on the energy obtained from the programmer through telemetry.

Disclosed is a pressure transducer comprising a pressure sensitive silicon die having a front side exposing piezoresistive means and comprising means for flip-chip mounting the die to a pressure vessel. The transducer further comprises a pressure vessel having an aperture, the pressure vessel comprising means for flip-chip mounting the die over the aperture. The die is flip-chip mounted over the aperture in the pressure vessel, and there is a hermetic seal between the pressure vessel and the die.

Disclosed is a pressure transducer comprising a pressure sensitive silicon die having a front side exposing piezoresistive means and a back side for receiving pressure from a pressure medium. The transducer further comprises a pressure vessel having an aperture and apparatus including a hermetic seal for mounting the die with the front side of the die facing the aperture. In this manner, the die is compressed toward the pressure vessel when positive pressure is applied to the back side of the die by the pressure medium.
