In the representative embodiments of the new and improved methods and apparatus disclosed herein, a well logging instrument includes an elongated body member having a funnel configuration fluid collector mounted thereon. An aperture in the body member, proximate the apex of the collector, allows discharge of the fluid through a passage in the body member, past a pair of radiation detectors, thereafter returning into the well. A tracer ejector valve assembly is mounted proximate the apex of the funnel and the aperture therein for selectively injecting a quantity of radioactive tracer element into the fluid flow. The tracer element is detected by the pair of detectors with the signals provided therefrom used to determine flow characteristics of the fluids within the well.

In a well containing a multi-phase fluid flow regime is disposed an elongated body member with a funnel configuration attached thereto for the purpose of collecting and mixing the multiple fluid phases. An aperture is provided in the body member, proximate to the apex of the funnel configuration, to allow dicharge of the substantially homogeneous mixture of the fluid phases from the funnel through a passage in the body member. A rotor is acted upon by the flow of this mixture and generates a signal representative of the mixture flow rate. A portion of the mixture then enters a chamber in the elongated body member wherein a measurement is made of the degree of penetration of the mixture achieved by gamma radiation, thereby yielding a measurement representative of the density of the mixture. The flow rates and volumetric fractions of each of the individual phases may then be determined in accordance with the mixture density and total flow rate.

An elongated body member, a portion of which forms a chamber for retaining samples of the liquid and steam contents of a geothermal well. A fluid tight seal is formed between an O-ring and a parallel sealing face of a slidable shaft member. The pressure sealing force is adjustably controlled by a spring assembly. The spring assembly is adjusted so that the sealing force must be overcome before a sample is taken. When the sealing force exerted upon the seal is overcome, the sample chamber is placed in fluid communication with the geothermal borehole by a series of passages which include grooves or slots contained in the slidable shaft member. After sampling is complete the seal is reformed allowing the sampler to be retrieved to a surface location.

A wellbore logging instrument is disclosed of the type having a density pad maintained in close proximity to the tool body, and a decentralizing arm pivotally mounted on the body and arranged to swing outward against the borehole to move the tool body and density pad against the opposite borehole wall. The apparatus includes a linkage assembly to provide a slight extension of the density pad at any selected time in the borehole.

A borehole instrument having four arm pad members utilizes four independent bow springs, each of the bow springs being anchored to the instrument at one of their ends and being individually slidably mounted at their other ends to the instrument. A push-pull rod activated by a solenoid within the instrument causes each of the slidable collars connected to the bow springs, respectively, to move down and thus close the instrument for easy passage through the borehole when not logging. When the push-pull rod is pulled up, each of the bow springs acts independently to cause the individual pads to make contact with the borehole wall. In an alternative embodiment, spring-driven pad linkage assemblies are likewise closed by pushing on the push-pull rod and are allowed to open and move out against the borehole wall when the rod is pulled up by action of the solenoid.

Multiple arm pad instrument for logging highly deviated boreholes

The borehole instrument contains a pair of bellows which are equally spaced from a differential pressure transducer to provide equal temperature expansion of the liquid to provide a true reading on the transducer. A third bellows is connected between the borehole fluid and the exterior of the transducer housing to eliminate pressure buildup in or around the transducer. The instrument has utility in finding oil-water, gas-oil and gas-water interfaces and other combinations of fluid interfaces by measuring the differential pressure across the interface.

An earth borehole instrument having a plurality of pad members adapted to engage the borehole walls are pivotally connected through mechanical arms to a spring-loaded slidable collar on the instrument. Each of the pad assemblies has a bow spring on its inner surface which is fixedly attached to one of the mechanical arms and slidably attached to another of the mechanical arms supporting the pad. The hidden bow spring maintains the pad, serving as a wear link, in flat contact with the borehole wall. In alternative embodiments, hidden bow springs maintain one or more borehole wall-engaging wheels against the borehole wall.

An earth borehole instrument has a plurality of wear link members adapted to engage the borehole walls which are pivotally attached through articulated mechanical arms both to a fixed collar and to a spring-loaded slidable collar on the instrument. The articulated arms for each wear link member consist of a pair of power arms which are each pivoted at a center point on the wear link adapted to engage the borehole wall and a pair of sensing arms which are pivotally connected, respectively, to the ends of the wear link. In an alternative embodiment, a bow spring is mounted on the underside of the power arms for maintaining the wear link flat against the borehole wall.
