Antimicrobial chemical compositions comprise an aluminum phosphate (AlP) solid dispersed within a binding polymer, wherein one or more bioactive materials are disposed within AlP forming a bioactive-AlP complex. The complex may comprise the bioactive material chemically bonded with the AlP, physically combined with the AlP, or a combination of both. The complex may be formed according to precipitation, condensation and sol-gel methods of forming. The complex is engineered to provide a controlled delivery of the bioactive material or a constituent thereof upon exposure to moisture to give a desired level of antimicrobial resistance to a film or composite formed from the composition of at least about 30 &#x3bc;g/m, and may also provide a desired degree of corrosion resistance through the release of passivating phosphate anion. Such antimicrobial chemical compositions provide an improved degree of active, long-term resistance to a broad range of micro-organisms when compared to known antimicrobial chemical compositions.

Antimicrobial chemical compositions

Anticorrosive coating compositions as disclosed comprise a binding polymer and an aluminum phosphate corrosion inhibiting pigment dispersed therein. The coating composition comprises up to 25 percent by weight aluminum phosphate. The binding polymer can include solvent-borne polymers, water-borne polymers, solventless polymers, and combinations thereof. The aluminum phosphate is made by sol gel process of combining an aluminum salt with phosphoric acid and a base material. Aluminum phosphate colloidal particles are nanometer sized, and aggregate to form substantially spherical particles. The coating composition provides a controlled delivery of phosphate anions of 100 to 1,500 ppm, depending on post-formation treatment of the aluminum phosphate, and has a total solubles content of less than 1500 ppm, The amorphous aluminum phosphate is free of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, and has a water adsorption potential of up to about 25 percent by weight water when present in a cured film.

Coating compositions with anticorrosion properties

APs are made by binary condensation via base-to-acid or acid-to-base routes. In the base-to-acid route, an aluminum hydroxide slurry is added to phosphoric acid that reacts to produce an aluminum phosphate condensate. In the acid-to-base route, phosphoric acid is added to an aluminum hydroxide slurry that reacts to produce an aluminum phosphate condensate. In an alternative base-to-acid route, an acidic aluminum phosphate is first made by adding phosphoric acid to a first amount of aluminum hydroxide slurry, and such acidic aluminum phosphate is added to a remaining amount of aluminum hydroxide slurry to react and produce an aluminum phosphate condensate. The reactions can be controlled to form an in-situ layered aluminum phosphate. So-formed APs can be amorphous, crystalline, or a combination thereof, and have low oil absorption and surface area, making them particularly useful in such end-use applications as extender pigments in coating compositions, replacing up to 70 wt % of TiO.

Aluminum phosphates, compositions comprising aluminum phosphate, and methods for making the same

AlP composite materials comprise an AlP aggregate core, and a shell disposed partially or entirely over the core and formed from a pigment material, e.g., TiO, having an index of refraction greater than the core, providing an overall index or refraction greater than the core and suited for use as a pigment replacement or extender. The AlP core comprises amorphous AlP, crystalline AlP, or a combination thereof, and can have an average particle size of less than about 30 microns. The TiOcan have an average grain size less than about 10 microns. The shell can have a layer thickness that is at least about 0.0001 microns. The shell is bonded to the core by a reaction between functional groups of the shell and core. The AlP composite material can be engineered to provide properties in addition to brightness for use as a pigment such as anticorrosion and/or antimicrobial protection.

Aluminum phosphate composite materials and compositions

Anticorrosive coating compositions comprise a binding polymer and an amorphous aluminum phosphate corrosion inhibiting pigment dispersed therein. The coating composition comprises 1 to 25 percent by weight aluminum phosphate. The binding polymer can include solvent-borne polymers, water-borne polymers, solventless polymers, and combinations thereof. The aluminum phosphate is made by combining an aluminum source with a phosphorous source to form an amorphous aluminum phosphate solid condensate. The coating composition is specially engineered to provide a controlled delivery of phosphate anions of 50 to 500 ppm, and has a total solubles content of less than 1500 ppm. The amorphous aluminum phosphate is preferably free of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. The amorphous aluminum phosphate has an oil absorption of less than 50, and a surface area of less than about 20 m/g, The coating composition has a water adsorption potential of up to 25% by weight water.

Epoxy-polysiloxane polymer compositions of this invention are prepared by combining a resin component with a hardener component. The resin component comprises a non-aromatic epoxy resin ingredient and a polysiloxane ingredient. The hardener component comprises an amine and optionally an organotin catalyst. The composition can also include aggregates, pigments, and other additives depending on the particular end use. The composition is prepared using a sufficient amount of water to promote hydrolysis of the polysiloxane and the polycondensation of the silanols produced by such hydrolysis. In its cured form, the epoxy-polysiloxane composition exists as a uniformly dispersed arrangement of linear epoxy chain fragments that are cross-linked with a continuous polysiloxane polymer chain, thereby forming a non-interpenetrating polymer network chemical structure that has substantial advantages over conventional epoxy systems. Protective coatings formed from such compositions exhibit excellent weatherability in sunlight, and superior chemical and corrosion resistance after curing.

Epoxy-polysiloxane polymer composition

A sprayable, trowelable epoxy polysiloxane based coating and flooring composition exhibiting excellent weatherability in sunlight and superior chemical, corrosion and impact resistance after curing is made up of: (a) a resin component which includes a non-aromatic epoxy resin having at least two 1,2-epoxy groups per molecule; a polysiloxane and an organooxysilane; (b) an difunctional aminosilane hardener component; (c) an organotin catalyst; and (d) an aggregate or pigment component. Organic solvents and flow modifying agents may be added to facilitate spray application. The resin component, hardener component, aggregate component and desired catalysts are combined in the presence of a sufficient amount of water to promote the hydrolysis of polysiloxane and/or organooxysilane and the polycondensation of the silanols produced by such hydrolysis. The aminosilane and epoxide resin react to form a cured linear epoxy polymer. The polysiloxane and/or organooxysilane undergo a hydrolysis reaction which produces silanol. The silanol undergoes polycondensation forming a linear epoxy-modified polysiloxane polymer.

Epoxy polysiloxane coating and flooring compositions

A protective coating is made by polymerizing in water an amino oxysilane having at least one primary amine group to control pH and water solubility, the amino oxysilane comprising a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group containing up to 12 carbon atoms, and having multiple hydrolyzable side groups selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, alkoxy and alkoxyalkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, where the number of repeating units of the oxysilane is in the range of from 1 to 3, and metal silicates comprising a cation from the group consisting of alkali metals and alkaline-earth metals, the metal silicate having multiple hydroxy side groups to facilitate polymerization.

Water-borne polysiloxane/polysilicate binder

A protective coating is made by polymerizing at ambient temperatures a silicon-oxygen bond compound selected from a group consisting of oxysilanes having side groups selected from the group consisting hydrogen and alkyl, aryl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl and hydroxyalkoxyalkyl groups containing up to six carbon atoms, where there are at least two hydrolyzable side groups for polymerization, and where the number of repeating units of the oxysilane is in the range of from 1 to 5, and/or silicone intermediates with side groups selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, the hydroxy group and alkyl, aryl and alkoxy groups having up to twelve carbon atoms and having an average molecular weight of up to 5000. The polymerization is catalyzed by a basic compound selected from a group consisting of mercaptans, silane substituted amines, polyamides, polyimides, amidoamines, and aliphatic amine compounds and aromatic amine compounds; and an organotin compound. Carbinols with at least two carbon bonded hydroxy groups per carbinol may also be included in the coating composition.

Polysiloxane coating

The invention provides a marine antifouling coating composition comprising a tributyltin acrylate coresin in the range of from about 10% to about 25% by weight, a tributyltin polysiloxane coresin in the range of from about 2% to about 20% by weight, at least one filler in the range of from about 10% to about 50% by weight and a solvent in an amount of from about 20% to about 50% by weight. Preferred tributyltin acrylate coresins comprise copolymers of tributyltin methacrylate monomers and methyl methacrylate monomers.

Organotin acrylate and organotin polysiloxane antifouling coating

A marine antifouling coating composition comprises an acrylic resin such as methyl methacrylate in the range of from 6 to 20% by weight, a polysiloxane having substituted thereon tributyltin moieties that are toxic to marine organisms. The polysiloxane is in the range of from 7 to 25% by weight. The acrylic resin and polysiloxane are dissolved in a solvent in the range of from 18 to 52% by weight with the balance of the composition in the range of from 10 to 65% by weight being primarily conventional marine paint and toxicant agents for augmenting action of the tributyltin polysiloxane. Copper or copper salts that are effective for inhibiting growth of marine organisms and facilitating release of toxins can also be included.
