A method and apparatus for checking the alignment of a torch on a robotic welder to assure that the torch is in the proper position before an automatic welding operation commences or continues. An alignment verification device which includes a plunger with a contact area of relatively small diameter is positioned at the workstation. The projecting wire tip of the robotic torch is automatically moved axially toward the plunger, and, if alignment is within the desired range, the tip will contact and depress the plunger. Upon depression of the plunger, a cam-operated limit switch is closed to send a signal to the robot that alignment is acceptable. If the torch is out of alignment for any reason, or if the welding wire is bent or otherwise misaligned, the wire will miss the contact area and the welding operation will cease so that faulty welds are prevented.

Torch alignment verification method and apparatus

Precise and fastenerless connection of a fixture to rotatable headstock and tailstock positioners is provided by a slidably engageable ball and socket arrangement located on the headstock positioner and on one end of the fixture, and by a tapered roller located at the opposite end of the fixture which is cradled between two grooved rollers located on the tailstock positioner. The ball and socket centers the headstock end of the fixture on the rotational axis of the headstock positioner while the tapered roller and grooved rollers locate the fixture linearly as well as centrally. The overall fixture support arrangement permits misalignment of the headstock and tailstock positioners without binding of the fixture. A second slidably engageable connecting device at the headstock end assures precise rotation of the fixture in unison with the headstock positioner.

Weld fixture mounting method

Weld fixture mounting

A method of sorting rivets or similarly shaped articles, and apparatus therefor. Rivets are directed along a track to a notch where they are supported in a shank-down attitude against a rotating gauging wheel having a plurality of gauging holes conforming generally to the shape of the shank. The wheel is rotated so the gauging holes move upwardly with respect to the shanks while grooves in the periphery of the wheel guide the shanks toward the holes. Rivets with a uniform shank will settle into the holes so their heads are below the periphery, while rivets with bent, gouged, burred or oversized shanks will not settle fully into the holes. A rivet kicker timed to the rotation of the wheel ejects rivets not fully settled in the holes. Fully settled rivets are blown out of the gauging holes into a tube where they are conveyed by air towards a riveting machine.
