A keypad device for a mobile telephone or other device utilizing a keypad or keyboard is comprised of a flexible substrate and a keypad cover. The flexible substrate includes a plurality of keys affixed to the surface as well as a plurality first conductive strips associated with each key. The keypad cover is attached to the flexible substrate. The keypad cover typically includes holes that permit the plurality of keys to protrude through the keypad cover. In addition, the keypad cover further includes a plurality of second conductive strips that selectively contact a corresponding first conductive strip on the flexible substrate. The plurality of first conductive strips is coupled to ground and the plurality of second conductive strips is coupled to logic circuitry. Or, in another embodiment, both sets of conductive strips are coupled with the logic circuitry. The default position of the keypad device has each of the first conductive strips in contact with each of the corresponding second conductive strips. This creates a short circuit condition that prevents key signals from being received by the logic circuitry. When a particular key is depressed to the point where the first conductive strip associated with that particular key is separated from the second conductive strip corresponding to the first conductive strip, the short circuit condition is removed. This allows a signal to be transmitted to and processed by the logic circuitry indicating that a particular key has been selected.

Keypad device

A loopback module includes a plurality of signal paths and is designed to mix an incoming phone signal with a signal from a signal generator to produce a loopback signal at the receive frequency of the phone. The loopback signal is applied to the phone's antenna. The phone then evaluates the loopback signal to determine the appropriate offset for the transmitter chain at that frequency and power level. This process is iterated until the desired number of frequencies and power levels are tested for proper calibration. The offsets are stored in memory for later use by the phone.

Method for calibrating the power output of a mobile device

A paging channel may be monitored for incoming calls to a mobile terminal by determining a current operating environment of the mobile terminal and then adjusting the paging channel monitoring frequency based on the current operating environment. Realizing that decreased power consumption may be preferred to improved responsiveness to incoming calls in some operating environments while improved responsiveness to incoming calls may be preferred to decreased power consumption in other operating environments, a mobile terminal may dynamically balance responsiveness to incoming calls with power consumption in accordance with its operating environment rather than being limited to a static or semi-static balance between the two performance criteria.

Systems, methods, and computer program products for dynamically adjusting the paging channel monitoring frequency of a mobile terminal based on the operating environment

A system and method of creating a digit string for use by a phone includes the steps of collecting speech data having numerical digits and/or alphabetical characters, parsing the speech data, converting each alphabetical character of the speech data into a numerical digit associated therewith, and assembling the speech data chronologically to form a digit string consisting of numerical digits and/or converted alphabetical characters. The converting step further includes comparing each alphabetical character of the speech data to a mapping table stored in memory and determining a numerical digit corresponding to each alphabetical character of the speech data from the mapping table.

System and method for creating a digit string for use by a portable phone

A method for rapidly reacquiring a timing reference after a sleep period in a wireless telephone receiving pilot signals from one or more base stations in a wireless network, wherein the wireless telephone has a master timer (local time reference), a fast, accurate clock source, a slow, less accurate but power efficient clock source and a memory. The method includes the steps of entering the sleep period by storing one or more parameters related to the pilot signals and how the pilot signals are changing over time, calculating a prediction of the parameters of the pilot signals after a sleep period based on the stored parameters, storing the prediction, starting the slow clock, and stopping the master timer (local time reference) and fast clock source. The method further includes the steps of ending the sleep period by generating a wake-up interrupt by the slow clock after the sleep period, restarting the master timer and fast clock source responsive to the wake-up interrupt, and reacquiring pilot signals using the predictions stored previously. A time correction factor can then be computed that closely aligns the received pilot signals on the prediction which is then weighted and the master timer is adjusted by the weighted time correction.

Wireless telephone that rapidly reacquires a timing reference from a wireless network after a sleep mode

In particular, according to the present invention, information is selectively displayed on a graphical display of a radiotelephone by suppressing display of information entered into the radiotelephone from a keypad of the radiotelephone as the information is entered. The suppression may occur after the radiotelephone is placed in to a display-suppressed state. Display of the entered information may be suppressed by displaying information other than the entered information. For example, a single character may be repetitively displayed in response to a plurality of different keystrokes performed on the keypad, or a blank display may be provided in response to a plurality of different keystrokes performed on the keypad. According to other aspects, the state of the radiotelephone may be controlled manually or automatically. The radiotelephone may be placed in one of the display-suppressed state or a non-display-suppressed state by entering a predetermined command from the keypad. Alternatively, information may be communicated between the radiotelephone and a station external to the radiotelephone to place the radiotelephone in one of the display-suppressed state or the non-display-suppressed state. A communication session between the radiotelephone and the station may be terminated to place the radiotelephone in the non-display-suppressed state. Related radiotelephone apparatus is also discussed.

Methods and apparatus for selectively displaying information entered from a radiotelephone keypad

A method and device are provided for of supporting a plurality of mobile station operation modes in a wireless communication system by user control. Presently, communication protocols exist for supporting end user equipment which operates in a single mode of operation. However, it is desirable to combine protocols from various technologies to form end user equipment which operates in multiple modes of operation. Thereby, the present method allows the mobile station to operate in a multi-mode environment where a user can invoke a certain mode.

Operating mobile stations of wireless communication systems in multiple

A method and device are provided for storing and maintaining parameters associated with activities relating to a first channel while a mobile station is camped on or uses a second channel. More specifically, when a parameter indicates that activities are to be executed, the mobile station returns to the first channel to execute the actions associated with the parameter. For instance, parameters associated with a DCCH may be stored when the mobile station moves from the DCCH to a packet data channel (PDCH). When a parameter indicates that activities are to be executed, the mobile station may then return to the DCCH from the PDCH and execute the actions associated with the parameter. Since the mobile station returns to the DCCH for the actions rather than staying on the PDCH, the mobile station is activated from a system perspective, on both channels.

Registration control of mobile stations in a wireless communication

A mobile station for measuring signal strength of a set of channels includes a synthesizer, a controller and a transceiver. During an idle period, the controller loads channel data of the set of channels contained into a memory block in the synthesizer. The synthesizer automatically selects the channel data for each channel stored in the memory block and generates a frequency signal corresponding to the selected channel data. The transceiver measures the signal strength data of the selected channel data and stores the signal strength data in a buffer. Once the signal strength data for the entire set of channels has been measured and stored in the buffer, the transceiver transmits the signal strength data to the controller. The set of channels may include a set of channels from a neighbor cell list or measurement order transmitted by the radio base station. The set of channels may also include a set of control channels that the mobile station measures at power-up.

Method and apparatus for automatic channel measurements

A method for increasing throughput capacity of a mobile station transmitting a plurality of consecutive bursts to a base station in a communication system is disclosed. The first burst is transmitted using a normal burst format while succeeding consecutive bursts are transmitted using an auxiliary burst format wherein the auxiliary bursts contain larger data fields than normal bursts.

A method and device are provided for controlling an activity mode of a mobile station after the system has originated or terminated a transaction with the mobile station. The activity mode corresponds to whether the mobile station stays 'awake' or goes into a sleep mode, which must be made known to the system. If the mobile station does not immediately go to the sleep mode, the base station can expect the mobile station to be reading all slots. If the mobile station is in the sleep mode, the mobile station only reads its assigned paging slots. The mobile station may not go to the sleep mode until a selected amount of activity time has expired; during the activity time, the mobile station continues to read all slots. As a result, the mobile station can immediately receive packets, thereby saving set-up time which increases the response time of the mobile station.

Activity control for a mobile station in a wireless communication system

A method for registering a mobile station when the mobile station first enters a communication system which supports packet data channels is disclosed. The mobile station receives system information broadcasted on a digital control channel. The mobile station is then assigned to a beacon packet data channel over which the mobile station registers with the communication system.

Method for system registration and cell reselection

A method for reassigning mobile stations a new phase within a channel is disclosed. In a communication system, a plurality of mobile stations attempt to communicate on a limited number of channels. The invention first uses a general allocation method to approximately evenly distribute the mobile stations on the available channels. After a mobile station begins active communication on the system, a second allocation method is used to change the phase of some mobile stations on a channel which has become heavily loaded. In addition, a message can also be sent to mobile stations assigned to but not yet actively communicating on the heavily loaded channel indicating that the mobile stations should change to a new channel.

Bandwidth allocation

A method and apparatus is provided for extending the battery life of a cellular radiotelephone. A cellular radiotelephone is conditioned to operate in a pager-only mode wherein the radiotelephone may receive short messages from a base station while conserving battery life by cyclically adopting a deep-sleep state. The base station is notified by the radiotelephone before the radiotelephone enters the deep-sleep state that the radiotelephone is unable to receive messages. After a period of time, the radiotelephone wakes-up, re-establishes contact with the base station and notifies the base station that the radiotelephone is ready to receive messages. After receipt of any messages the radiotelephone repeats the process.
