An apparatus includes first and second pluralities of switches, a controller for controlling these switches, gate-drivers for driving switches from the first plurality of switches, and first and second terminals configured for coupling to corresponding first and second external circuits at corresponding first and second voltages. During operation, the controller causes the first plurality of switches to transition between states. These transitions result in the second voltage being maintained at a value that is a multiple of the first voltage. The controller also causes the second plurality of switches to transition between states. These transitions resulting in capacitors being coupled or decoupled from the second voltage. The gate drivers derive, from the capacitors, charge for causing a voltage that enables switches from the first plurality of switches to be driven.

Power supply for gate driver in switched-capacitor circuit

In a power converter, each gate-driving circuit uses charge from a selected pump capacitor operate a corresponding switch. The switches transitions between different states, each of which corresponds to a particular interconnection of pump capacitors. During clocked operations, the first switch closes, thereby establishing a connection with the first pump capacitor. Prior to the first switch closing, the second switch closes.

Switch-timing in a switched-capacitor power converter

An apparatus for converting voltage includes terminals coupled to external circuits at corresponding voltages and a switching network having driving circuits and semiconductor switches that interconnect capacitors in successive states to one another and to the terminals. The switches interconnect some capacitors to one another through a series of switches when an activation pattern causes them to be activated. Each driving circuit has power connections, a control input, and a drive output coupled to and controlling at least one switch. A drive output of one of them couples to and drives each switch. Some of the driving circuits are powered via corresponding power connections from at least one of the capacitors such that a voltage across the corresponding power connections is less than a highest of the corresponding voltages. The terminals and the switching network are constituents of a switched capacitor converter.

Driving switches in a dual-phase series-parallel switched-capacitor circuit

A power-conversion apparatus includes active-semiconductor switches configured to transition between first and second states that result in corresponding first and second electrical interconnections between capacitors and at least one of first and second terminals configured to be coupled to first and second external circuits at corresponding first and second voltages, a pre-charge circuit coupled to at least one of the capacitors, and gate-driver circuits, each of which includes a control input, power connections, and a drive output. Each switch is coupled to and controlled by a drive output of one of the gate-driver circuits. Power for the gate-driver circuits comes from charge stored on at least one of the capacitors via the power connection of that gate-driver circuit.

Switched-capacitor converters with low-voltage gate drivers

Cycle timing of a charge pump is adapted according to monitoring of operating characteristics of a charge pump and/or peripheral elements coupled to the charge pump. In some examples, this adaptation provides maximum or near maximum cycle times while avoiding violation of predefine constraints (e.g., operating limits) in the charge pump and/or peripheral elements.

Charge pump timing control

A switched capacitor power converter includes active semiconductor switch elements that are configured to electrically interconnect capacitors to one another in successive states. Switch driving circuits, each with a control input, power connections, and a drive output are coupled to and for control of one or more of the switch elements. At least some switch driving circuits are configured to be from one or more of the capacitors such that the voltage across power connections of said driving circuit is substantially less than a high voltage terminal of the converter. In some examples, the switch elements are configured to interconnect at least some capacitors to one another through a series of multiple of the switch elements. In some examples, the switch elements and capacitors are configured to form multiple distinct charge transfer paths between the first terminal and the second terminal, and at least some of the switch driving circuits that control switch elements of one of the distinct charge transfer paths are powered from capacitors of one or more other charge transfer paths.

Efficient gate drivers for switched capacitor converters

An apparatus for voltage conversion includes a switched capacitor circuit, a pre-charge circuit, a voltage divider stage, and a driver stage. The switched capacitor circuit has pump capacitors to transfer energy and a steady-state operating mode and a pre-charge mode. The pre-charge circuit initially charges the pump capacitors when the switched capacitor circuit operates in the pre-charge mode. It includes a voltage divider stage having one or more nodes, each of which provides voltage at one of a corresponding one or more voltage levels, and a driver stage having one or more cascoded drivers, each of which comprises a first terminal for receiving a drive signal that depends at least in part on a voltage level at a corresponding one of the nodes, and a second terminal for coupling to a pump capacitor and to another of the drivers.
