A method is described that includes receiving one or more seismic measurements corresponding to a plurality of source and receiver locations and providing an earth model for a geologic medium having a heterogeneous tilted symmetry axis. The earth model includes a nonzero shear velocity in the direction of the symmetry axis. The one or more seismic measurements are propagated over a plurality of time-steps in accordance with the earth model and a set of energy-conservative self-adjoint pseudoacoustic equations. The set of energy-conservative self-adjoint pseudoacoustic equations describes one or more seismic wavefields.

A system and method for processing seismic data on one or more co-processor devices that are operatively coupled to a host computing system via a communications channel. The compression of input data transmitted to the co-processor device and/or the size of the storage provided on the co-processor device may enhance the efficiency of the processing of the data on the peripheral device by obviating a bottleneck caused by the relatively slow transfer of data between the host computing system and the co-processor device or by the relatively slow transfer of data within the co-processor device between the co-processor information storage and the co-processor.

A method and corresponding system is provided for computation utilizing an earth model representation via a computing system having a first processor having access to an earth model dataset. The method includes compressing the earth model dataset at the first processor to generate a look-up table and a set of data indices (i.e., collectively a compressed earth model representation), wherein the look-up table includes quantized data values. By then storing the look-up table in a first level ('fast') memory, and storing the indices in a second level ('slower,' higher memory capacity) memory, the look-up table and the indices can be accessed to selectively decompress the compressed earth model representation at the first processor such that the computation can be performed efficiently by the first processor.

A method for compressing seismic data to reduce data storage and transmission requirements applies wavelet transforms to digitized trace sequential data obtained from plural arrays of multiple acoustic sensors. The wavelet transforms are applied in at least three dimensions, and, in the case of underwater exploration, four dimensions. The transformed data is ordered and quantized to increase the number of zero data values, and the quantized data is compressed using rim-length encoding and entropy coding. The entropy coded data is stored for later retrieval or transmitted to a remote location. The retrieved or received data is decompressed, dequantized and inverse wavelet transformed to construct a representation of the original data. The compression can be selected to be in excess of 100:1 to significantly reduce the data storage and transmission requirements without significant degradation of the reconstructed data.

A method is disclosed for determining if sign-clipped variations of full-waveform traces can be used in subsequent cross-correlation processing without undue hardship. In accordance with one aspect, the present invention examines skewness of the amplitude spectrum of the full waveform. If the former significantly differs from conventional Gaussian distribution over the frequency range of interest, i.e., the amplitude spectrum is non-Gaussian, sign-clipped versions thereof can be used in subsequent cross-correlation processing without undue loss in processing accuracy. In another aspect, the present invention is used to edit a series of traces, one at a time, gathered by a large multichannel collection system. In this aspect, the different spectral noise estimates, including cross-correlation estimates generated from sign-clipped versions of the full-waveform traces, are advantageously used.

Robust estimation method for determining when subsequent data processing

A method is disclosed for editing seismic traces gathered by large multichannel collection systems using a pattern analysis of the noise spectrum of each trace. Analysis is limited to only a small time window, say the last second of the trace. In that way a minimum number of quantitative variables and mathematical manipulations are required to carry out the invention. On-site as well as off-site, processing of the traces in accordance with the method of the present invention, is contemplated.
