Ternary metallic alloys of the formula Li.sub.x B.sub.y Mg.sub.z wherein 5.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.0.90, 0.05.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.90, 0.05.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.0.90, and x+y+z=1 and a method of preparing them. These alloys find use in areas where superlight weight, high specific strength (strength/weight ratio) and oxidation resistance are required.

Metal alloy and method of preparation thereof

Alloy complexes which are composed of (1) lithium (Li, (2) Boron (B), and ) one or more of the following elements: sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), and cesium (Ce). These alloy complexes in powder form react spontaneously with air upon contact to produce large amounts of heat.

Pyrophoric alloy complexes

An electrode grid comprising a sintered mat or felt of graphite fibers which are coated with a mixture of from about 85 to less than 100 weight percent of nickel and from more than zero to about 15 weight percent of phosphorous, the graphite fibers having a density greater than 1.8 gm/cm.sup.3. The grid is attached to an electrical connector and then impregnated with an active material such as nickel hydroxide or cadmium hydroxide to form an electrode.

Lightweight battery electrode

A new anode material consisting essentially of from about 50 weight percent o about 90 weight percent of lithium and from about 50 weight percent to about 10 weight percent of boron, and current generating electrochemical cells utilizing said anode material.

Battery with boron-lithium alloy anode

A method of activating a battery containing an alkali metal halide electrte comprising placing a powdered alkali metal carbide selected from the group consisting of lithium carbide, sodium carbide, potassium carbide, rubidium carbide, cesium carbide, and mixtures thereof into contact with the alkali metal halide electrolyte and then contacting the powdered alkali metal carbide with a halogen gas selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine, and mixtures thereof.
