In video tape recording apparatus composite video signals are separated into their luminance and chrominance components for processing prior to recording. The luminance components are digitized, adaptively temporal and spatial filtered, and folded into a reduced frequency spectrum to generate a digital signal that is converted to analog form to modulate the frequency of the luminance carrier signal used in video tape recording. The chrominance components are converted to the color-under signals used in video tape recording. In video tape playback apparatus the color-under signals are converted up in frequency to provide chrominance components for inclusion in reproduced composite video signals. Also, in the video tape playback apparatus, the frequency modulation of the luminance carrier signal is detected to recover folded luminance signals which are digitized, time-base-corrected, unfolded, and adaptively temporal and spatial filtered to suppress aliases associated with unfolding to generate a digital signal that is converted to analog form to provide luminance components for inclusion in reproduced composite video signals. The backward compatability of the video tape recordings when playing them back in video tape playback apparatus already in the field is accommodated by de-emphasizing the high frequencies of the luma during recording. The high frequencies of the luma can be re-emphasized during playback to maintain substantially full NTSC or PAL luminance bandwidth.

Video signal encoded with additional detail information

A system for reproducing a luminance signal from a medium containing a previously recorded luminance signal with a high-frequency portion thereof compressed in dynamic range includes a circuit for recovering that luminance signal from the medium. Filtering is done to separate the low-frequency and compressed-in-dynamic-range high-frequency portions of the recovered luminance signal from each other. A corer responds to the separated compressed-in-dynamic-range high-frequency portion of the recovered luminance signal to provide a cored high-frequency portion with expanded dynamic range and reduced noise. The level of the cored high-frequency portion with expanded dynamic range and reduced noise is then boosted by a predetermined amount to compensate for energy losses during the compression of the dynamic range and added back to the low-frequency portion of the recovered luminance signal to reproduce a full-band luminance signal with at least partially restored dynamic range for high-frequencies and without readily visible high-frequency noise.

Deemphasis and subsequent reemphasis of high-energy reversed-spectrum components of a folded video signal

An encoder separates luminance and chrominance signal components of a composite video signal. The frame-to-frame changes in the luminance signal are detected, and a motion signal is derived therefrom. The higher frequency portion of the luminance signal is adaptively de-emphasized in amplitude and folded into the spectrum of the lower frequency portion of the luminance signal, to generate a folded-spectrum luminance signal for modulating the frequency of a luma carrier. In a combined signal, suitable for magnetic recording in accordance with a modified VHS standard, the chrominance signal is translated in frequency to generate a color-under signal in a frequency band below that occupied by the FM luma carrier. The de-emphasized higher frequency portion of the luminance signal, as folded into its lower frequency portion, and encoding of the motion signal onto vacant portions of the frequency band below that occupied by the FM luma carrier in such a magnetic recording facilitate its being compatibly reproduced by conventional VHS reproduction devices. In a wideband reproduction device a decoder demodulates the folded-spectrum luminance signal from the FM luma carrier, unfolds the lumininance signal, and reemphasizes the high frequencies of the unfolded luminance signal. The color-under signal is translated in frequency to regenerate chrominance signal combined with the unfolded luminance signal with its high frequencies re-emphasized to their original amplitude, regenerating a composite signal descriptive of a full bandwidth image. The motion signal is utilized in the encoder for motion-adaptively pre-filtering the input luminance and is recovered in the decoder for motion-adaptively post-filtering the unfolded luminance.

A video signal recording system is disclosed which includes a circuit for generating a control signal representative of the level of the high-frequency portion of a full-bandwidth luminance signal. An adaptive deemphasis circuit reduces the level of the high-frequency portion of the luminance signal in response to the control signal. A folding circuit folds the high-frequency portion of the deemphasized luminance signal into the low-frequency portion. The folded deemphasized luminance is combined with the control signal and recorded on the video tape. A video signal playback system is disclosed which includes a circuit for separating the previously recorded control signal from the previously recorded folded deemphasized luminance signal. An unfolding circuit unfolds the played back luminance signal to produce a wide bandwidth deemphasized luminance signal. An adaptive reemphasis circuit boosts the level of the high-frequency portion of the unfolded luminance signal in response to the separated control signal.

A frequency-multiplexed video signal is generated in which a color-under signal and a second under signal are linearly combined with at least partially overlapping frequency spectra to form a composite under signal for an FM luma signal. The frequency-multiplexed video signal is suited for recording on magnetic tape using helical scanning methods and for being played back from the magnetic tape using helical scanning methods. The second under signal is generated in such way that line-comb filtering can be used during playback to separate color-under signal and second under signal each from the composite signal despite their frequency spectra being at least partially overlapping in the composite signal.

Apparatus is disclosed for processing video information which is reproduced from a magnetic recording medium in a video cassette recorder. The luminance portion of the video signal, which is 'folded' about a sampling frequency carrier before recording on magnetic tape, is unfolded after being read from the magnetic tape to restore the bandwidth of the signal, and is applied in parallel through horizontal and vertical comb filters. The combined output of the horizontal comb filter and the vertical comb filter may include incompletely cancelled horizontal and vertical components of the folding frequency and sidebands due to the effects of picture contents. An edge detector receptive to the unfolded video signal responds to an encountered brightness edge, and generates a signal which varies the proportions of the video outputs of the horizontal and vertical comb filters in the combined output.

Removal of the folding carrier and sidebands from an unfolded video

A television signal having a luminance spectrum extending from zero to f.sub.h in horizontal spatial frequencies and from zero to f.sub.v in vertical spatial frequencies is recorded on a video tape. A folded-spectrum signal is generated for recording by modulating the luminance signal onto a folding carrier of (f.sub.h /2, f.sub.v /2) complex spatial frequency. This is done by heterodyning the luminance signal with a folding carrier wave and then selecting as said folded-spectrum signal only the baseband portion of the resulting signal. At least when there is change between successive television images, the luminance signal is pre-filtered by a low-pass spatial filter that separates the two-dimensional image spectral domain into a pass band region and into an attenuation band region. Each point in the passed region has a corresponding mirror point in the attenuated region as mirrored about a complex spatial frequency (f.sub.h /4, f.sub.v /4) in both horizontal and vertical directions. During subsequent playback the folded-spectrum signal recovered from the tape is unfolded by heterodyning it with the folding carrier wave and selecting only the baseband portion of the resulting signal. At least when there is change between successive television images, the unfolded-spectrum signal is passed through a low-pass spatial reconstruction filter similar to that used as a recording pre-filter, and accompanying aliases are attenuated by the reconstruction filter.

Spatial filter for improved VHS system

An improved video signal recording system for recording a full bandwidth video signal on a limited bandwidth medium is disclosed. The recording system includes an encoder, coupled to an input terminal, for adaptively processing a composite video signal in response to a motion representative signal, and producing two signals; a luminance signal, having attenuated high frequencies subsampled so as to be folded into a spectral hole in the low frequencies, and being bandwidth limited to the limited bandwidth of the recording medium; and a combined signal including a chrominance and a motion component. Luminance signal recording circuitry records the folded luminance signal on the medium and chrominance signal recording circuitry records the combined chrominance and motion signal on the medium. An improved video signal playback system for reproducing such a prerecorded video signal is also disclosed. The playback system consists of a luminance signal playback circuit for retrieving the prerecorded luminance signal from the medium, and chrominance signal playback circuit for retrieving the prerecorded combined chrominance and motion signals from the medium. A decorder extracts the motion signal and the chrominance signal from the combined chrominance and motion signal and an unfolding circuit extracts the luminance high frequencies from the prerecorded folded luminance signal and adaptively regenerates the full bandwidth luminance signal in response to the motion signal. This regenerated full bandwidth luminance signal is combined with the chrominance signal to reproduce the originally recorded composite video signal. A recording medium previously recorded by such a recording system is capable of being played back on a standard playback system without objectionably artifacts in the reproduced image.
