Systems and methods that enable secure, low latency, and reliable one-to-many and/or many-to-many communications between various endpoints associated with an electrical power grid. The endpoints can include, for example, physical sensors coupled to the electrical power grid, controllable resources of the electrical power grid (e.g., battery storage units, solar generation curtailment, wind generation curtailment, EV charging systems, and/or HVAC systems), controllers that each control one or more of the controllable resources of the electrical power grid, HMIs that enable human monitoring and/or human controlling of the electrical power grid, data historian(s) that enable persistent storage of various electrical power grid data (e.g., measurements, control parameters, conditions, etc.), and/or other endpoint(s).

Universal power data exchange (UPDE) for electrical power grid

Using real or estimated power measurements to detect one or more anomalies in an AC electric network. In some implementations, one or more actions can be automatically performed in response to detection of the anomaly. Such action(s) can include causing automatic control of electrical resource(s) of the AC electric network to mitigate the detected anomaly/anomalies. For example, such action(s) can include automatically isolating the AC electric network in response to detecting the AC electric network has one or more anomalies, and optionally restoring the AC electric network after the abnormal conditions are no longer detected. For instance, this can include a main AC electric network isolating an AC electric subnetwork in response to detecting abnormal conditions in the AC electric sub-network or an AC electric sub-network isolating and islanding itself from the main AC electric network in response to detecting abnormal conditions in the main AC electric network.

Implementations are directed to aspect(s) of a fast feedback control system that actively stabilizes a geographically dispersed power grid by e.g., providing capabilities to match supply and demand at a high update rate. Implementations enable fast measurements of properties of the power grid and fast control parameter(s) back to controllable resource(s) in the power grid, such as control parameter(s) back to battery storage units, solar generation curtailment, wind generation curtailment, EV charging systems, and/or HVAC systems. In various implementations, the fast measurements and/or the fast control parameters can continuously occur at an update rate that is faster than once per second, such as at an update rate greater than 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60 Hz. For example, measurements from a controllable resource can be transmitted to a geographically remote parent controller at 60 Hz and responsive control parameters can be received at the controllable resource at 60 Hz.

Fast control of power grids using streaming protocol

Implementations are directed to achieving a real-time and distributed control solution that can at least selectively achieve a deterministic flow of power at a virtual point of interconnection (vPOI) of a virtual microgrid, where there is limited or no power measurement data available at the vPOI. Some of those implementations are directed to automatically generating virtual microgrids for a power network, optionally including generating additional and/or alternative virtual microgrids in response to transient and/or persistent changes to the power network. Some of those implementations are additionally or alternatively directed to dynamic control of a virtual microgrid to achieve the deterministic flow of power at the vPOI thereof.

Systems and method are described herein for determining scheduling of electrical power system loads and generation resources. A load scheduling module determines load scheduling characteristics of the electrical power system loads and the generation resources based on power system constraints including power system flow, voltage constraints associated with each electrical system loads or each generation resource, or energy storage capacity of an energy storage device coupled to at least one of the electrical power system loads or the generation resources. The load scheduling module initiates a first signal that curtails power of a subset of the electrical power system loads based on the load scheduling characteristics. The load scheduling module initiates a second signal that adjusts power of at least a portion of remaining loads of the electrical power system loads to accommodate for the subset of the plurality of the electrical power system loads having curtailed power.

A power flow schedule of a cluster is determined by calculating sensitivity of the net power exchange bounds. Each cluster includes a different section of the power system. The cluster provides to another cluster the power flow schedule and the net power exchange bounds for determination of a second power flow schedule by another cluster based on collective net power exchange bounds, a forecast power supply of the plurality of clusters, and a forecast power demand schedule. The clusters are hierarchically arranged such that the another cluster is higher in a hierarchy than the cluster. The cluster receives from the another cluster the second power flow schedule. The first power flow schedule is adjusted locally within the cluster based on the second power schedule and the net power exchange bounds of the cluster. The power output of the cluster is controlled using the adjusted first power flow schedule.

Systems and methods are described herein for maintaining stability of a power grid by providing a continuous power system data stream. Power system data including one or more data packets is monitored to identify reliability of data transmission. A predicted data packet is continually generated, characterizing predicted power system data of the power grid based on filtering of the one or more past and most recent non-missing and reliable data packets. A substitution factor of the one or more data packets is determined. The predicted data packet is selectively substituted in place of the one or more data packets based on the substitution factor.

Maintaining power grid stability using predicted data

Systems, methods, and products are described herein for identifying deviations within a power system. Using time-synchronized measurement devices, a set of voltages and currents associated with a plurality of electrical components within the power system are continuously measured. For each electrical component of the plurality of electrical components, a representative set of parameters are recursively determined based on the measured set of voltages and currents. For each electrical component, an electrical characteristic value is determined based on the representative set of parameters. For each electrical component, a deviation of the electrical component is identified based on comparison of the determined electrical characteristic value with a reference value of the electrical characteristic of the electrical component or based on identifying the deviation by means of a filtered rate of change. An alert of the deviation is provided for further characterization of an abnormality in the power system.

Real-time deviation detection of power system electrical characteristics using time-synchronized measurements

Methods, systems, and controllers are described herein for controlling an electrical power system. A time-synchronized measurement of a phasor from one or more phasor measurement units is fed back to a feedback controller. Distributed energy resources of the electrical power system are controlled by the feedback controller using feedback control algorithms by sending, to distributed energy resources, a power setpoint derived from the time-synchronized measurement of the phasor.

Decoupling synchrophasor based control system for multiple distributed energy resources

Attributes of a power system having one or more distributed energy resources are characterized by continuously receiving data comprising a power data stream having at least two components and derived from at least one distributed energy resource. A control data stream comprising at least two components is generated. An error data stream is determined based on a difference between respective components of the power data stream to components of a reference data stream comprising at least two components. The error data stream and the reference data stream are processed to generate the control data stream. The control data stream is continuously output to enable control and/or monitoring of the power flow of at least one distributed energy resource.

Decoupling synchrophasor based control system for distributed energy resources

Systems, methods, and computer program products are described for controlling power of a balancing area having a plurality of distributed energy resources of a power system. A high frequency controller having a memory and at least one data processor of one distributed energy resource of the balancing area continuously receives (i) data including a phasor data stream having time-synchronized phasor measurements derived from the plurality of distributed energy resources of the balancing area and (ii) real-time energy levels of the plurality of distributed energy resources. The high frequency controller determines a power set point pair having a desired frequency set point and a desired voltage set point based on a combination of the real-time energy levels and the time-synchronized phasor measurements. The high frequency controller continuously dispatches the power set point pair to the plurality of distributed energy resources to enable control and/or monitoring of a frequency component of the phasor data stream.

Time synchronized frequency and voltage regulation of electric power balancing areas

Systems and methods are described herein for controlling power at a point of interconnection of the power grid. Power data that characterizes power flow at a point of interconnection of the power grid is received. The power data includes power contribution levels of at least one distributed energy resource and at least one analysis profile for a time period. An objective energy function is determined based on the power contribution levels and the at least one analysis profile. A power contribution set-point is determined based on a minimum value of the objective energy function. The power contribution set-point reflects an optimized power contribution level of the at least one distributed energy resource. The power contribution set-point is provided to the at least one distributed energy resource to achieve the optimized power contribution level by modifying the power contribution of the at least one distributed energy resource.

Optimizing power contribution of distributed energy resources for real time power demand scheduling

A method and system to control distributed energy resources in an electric power system includes generation, storage and controllable loads. The system uses time synchronized measurements of voltage phasor and current phasors and their derivative information that may include real and reactive power to regulate and decouple both static and dynamic effects of real and reactive power flow through the local electric power system connected to the area electric power system. The method and system provides precise real and reactive power demand set point pairs; damping of real and reactive power fluctuations in the local electric power system; decoupling between real and reactive power demand response set points by means of a multivariable control system that uses time synchronized measurements of voltage and current phasors and their derivative information.
