A compensator for a pressure operated fuel regulator comprises a housing having an opening for bleeding air therethrough. There is a tapered plug in the opening fastened to a thermostatic metal within the housing. When the thermostatic metal is heated by incoming air, the clearance around the plug in the opening increases, and the amount of air bleeding out of the opening increases.

A heat recuperator comprises a cross-flow ceramic core within a housing. Of the six faces on the core, four have openings for gas flow therethrough and two faces are solid. Means are provided to apply compressive force to the solid faces, the means being disposed within the housing.

A gas burner comprises a ceramic tube or nozzle through which a gaseous fuel flows, a chamber surrounding the ceramic tube, and means for delivering preheated combustion air to the chamber. The tube is made of an insulating ceramic in order to insulate the fuel from the preheated air. The inner portion of the tube comprises an insulating ceramic having lower thermal conductivity than that of the outer portion.

A gas burner comprises a ceramic tube through which a gaseous fuel flows, a chamber surrounding the ceramic tube, and means for delivering preheated combustion air to the chamber. There is a venturi around the tip of the ceramic tube, angled with respect to the tube, through which the preheated combustion air flows. The venturi enhances mixing of the air with the gaseous fuel forward of the tip of the ceramic tube.

A temperature compensator for a pressure operated fuel regulator is used in combination with a heat recuperator to regulate fuel flow. In the recuperator, air to be used for combustion of the fuel is heated. Some of the heated air is supplied to the compensator, which comprises a housing having an opening for bleeding air therethrough. The rate of bleeding through of the air, and consequently the pressure drop across the compensator, is dependent on the temperature of the air supplied to the compensator.

A multi-pass ceramic recuperator includes a temperature compensator mounted within the gaseous flow of an intermediate pass. The compensator includes a bleed valve actuated by a temperature sensitive mechanism which is mounted outside the compensator body and directly in the gaseous flow.

A heat recuperator comprises a triple pass cross flow ceramic core within a six sided metal housing. The four sides of the housing through which air or gas flows have cast ceramic material thereat with landed surfaces thereon which are in gasket-sealing engagement with a respective face of the core. Disposed between the closed sides of the housing and the solid faces of the core are spring means for exerting compressive force to the solid faces.

In the manufacture of a heat recuperator, a ribbed layered cross-flow ceramic core is inserted into a metal housing. The core has divider ribs in the air-flow layers to provide triple pass air flow through the core. There are triple pass gaskets on the air-in and air-out faces of the core, between said faces and cast ceramic landed surfaces of the housing.

Cross-flow ceramic recuperators are useful in industrial waste heat recovery in an assembly in which the ceramic recuperator is held by a metallic housing adapted for retrofitting to the metallic fittings of existing furnaces, ovens and preheaters. The assembly is characterized by at least two insulating layers inside the conduit portions leading from the operating hot faces of the ceramic core, whereby the operating efficiency of the assembly is increased.

Insulating and sealing layers between the core and housing minimize heat loss through the housing and prevent leakage of the heat transfer fluids past the core.
