Systems and methods for reducing heat loss to a turbocharger during cold engine starting are described. In one example, a turbocharger bypass pipe and a turbocharger turbine pipe are oriented at forty five degrees relative to a longitudinal axis of a catalyst so that a turbocharger turbine may be completely bypassed, thereby increasing the amount of energy that may be transferred to the catalyst.

Method and systems for reducing heat loss to a turbocharger during cold engine starting

Methods and systems are provided for expediting light-off of a catalyst during engine cold-start conditions by inhibiting rotation of the turbocharger shaft. In one example, a method may include inhibiting rotation of the turbocharger shaft during engine cold-start conditions until the catalyst is operating at a desired efficiency. The rotation of the shaft may be inhibited via either a passive or an active shaft locking mechanism.

Method and system to improve cold-start catalyst light-off

An intake manifold for an internal combustion engine comprises upper and lower shell members with outer flanges. The shell members define a manifold cavity having a plenum and a plurality of runners. The upper shell includes an upper post formed as an indentation into the plenum with a tunnel wall and a terminus wall. The lower shell includes a lower post formed as an indentation into the plenum with a tunnel wall and a terminus wall. The terminus walls are attached to provide a brace across the plenum. One of the posts includes an orifice penetrating the tunnel wall. A sealed coupler extends from the one post and is adapted to receive a secondary gas for mixing within the plenum. Thus, secondary gases can be introduced without additional structures that could impede gas flow and could increase manufacturing cost.

An exhaust system for an engine is provided herein. The exhaust system includes an emission control device and an exhaust manifold having a plurality of runners merging at a confluence section positioned upstream of the emission control device. The exhaust system further includes a mixer plate positioned in the confluence section, the mixer plate including a central opening and a plurality of louvered vents positioned axially around the central opening, the louvered vents having angled openings facing a common rotational direction.

A heat recovery system for an engine is provided herein. According to one approach, the heat recovery system includes an upstream portion that circumferentially wraps around an outlet of an exhaust manifold. Further, the heat recovery system includes a downstream portion in direct surface contact with a top exterior surface and a bottom exterior surface of a plurality of runners of the exhaust manifold.

An engine exhaust component is provided. The engine exhaust component may include a plurality of coolant passages having parallel coolant flow, each coolant passage at least partially surrounding a respectively corresponding exhaust runner. The engine exhaust component may further include a coolant inlet manifold coupled to each of the coolant passages and a coolant outlet manifold coupled to each of the coolant passages. In this way, more even and controlled cooling can be provided.

An exhaust flow director and catalyst mount for an internal combustion engine includes a collector chamber with an outlet flange adapted for direct connection with an exhaust treatment catalyst. A number of transitional guide vanes located within the collector chamber direct exhaust gases flowing from runners into the collector chamber.
