A food package having opposed upper and lower rigid parts which are hinged together to meet along adjacent reference planes. Each part has flanges located in its respective reference plane and at least one food receiving recessed compartment extending away from its respective reference plane and away from the other part. A flexible film located in each reference plane is attached to the flanges of that part, surrounding its respective recessed compartment(s), to airtightly seal the contents thereof.

A package is provided for enclosing a proteinaceous product under vacuumized and hermetically sealed conditions. The package has a peelable hermetic reclosure and a body member of semi-rigid preformed plastic with a first planar marginal portion and a central portion shaped to provide a packaging chamber. The package also has a flexible dimensionally stable base member having a corresponding second planar marginal portion and a central portion to provide a closure for said packaging chamber. The two planar marginal portions are adhered together face-to-face by an adhesive to provide at least a portion of the hermetic seal wherein said adhesive is a high molecular weight pressure sensitive hot-melt adhesive having a viscosity of between about 5,000 and about 100,000 centipoise at 300.degree. F. and said adhesive provides a peelable hermetic reclosure. Curling and wrinkling of the flexible base member are precluded by utilizing a flexible base member that is a film component, preferably a polyolefin film component, which has a coefficient of thermal expansion that is equal to or greater than that of the semi-rigid preformed plastic body member.

A continuous method of enclosing a proteinaceous product in a vacuumized and hermetically sealed package having a peelable hermetic reclosure and having a body member of semi-rigid preformed plastic with a first planar marginal portion and a central portion shaped to provide a packaging chamber. The package also has a flexible dimensionally stable base member having a corresponding second planar marginal portion and a central portion to provide a closure for said packaging chamber. The method requires placing a sufficient quantity of proteinaceous product in the central portion of the body member to substantially fill the central portion when the package is completed, positioning the first planar marginal portion face-to-face to the corresponding second planar marginal portion, vacuumizing the assembly, and hermetically sealing the package. The improvement is applying an adhesive to either the first planar marginal portion to provide at least a portion of the hermetic seal wherein said adhesive is a high molecular weight pressure sensitive hot melt adhesive having a viscosity of between 5,000 to 100,000 centipoise at 300.degree. F. and said adhesive provides a peelable hermetic reclosure.

This invention relates to packaging and is more particularly concerned with improvements in a package and method of forming the same in which the meat or perishable food package can be easily opened and reclosed while positively conveying a positive perception to the customer that the package is hermetically sealed before it is opened and that the package is positively resealable. An opening and reclosure cap provides an audible snap as it is opened and a similar audible snap as it is reclosed.

A container for sliced meat products or the like has a base including a marginal base flange, a raised pedestal, and a short peripheral sidewall connecting the pedestal to the marginal base flange. A cover is also provided including a marginal cover flange and a cavity, the cavity being formed by a raised top wall and a long peripheral sidewall connecting the marginal cover flange to the top wall. A plurality of concave channels are provided along the interior surface of the long peripheral sidewall. These channels extend from the top wall and terminate at a height above the marginal cover flange which is greater than or equal to the height of the short peripheral sidewall of the base. A plurality of depressions or grooves are also provided in the upper surface of the pedestal. Preferably, the grooves extend substantially perpendicularly to the adjacent portion of the short peripheral sidewall and are equidistantly spaced. In addition, the end of each groove adjacent the short peripheral sidewall is matingly positioned adjacent a corresponding lower end of a respective concave channel.
