Techniques for a license manager service of a cloud system to activate and run licensed applications in VPCs with peering connections (or 'peered VPCs') established with configured VPCs. The license manager service may provide users with the ability to select a particular VPC to be configured to use licensed applications, and may further allow users to enable peered VPCs of the configured VPC to use licensed applications. The license manager service may provide a managed experience for activating the licenses for the applications running on computing resources in the configured VPCs and peered VPCs. The license manager service may launch licensed applications on virtual resources in a user's configured VPC and peered VPCs, manage the process for activating the licensed applications with third-party providers, and provide the user with access to licensed applications that have been activated and configured by the license manager service in configured and peered VPCs.

Managed activation of licensed software for resources in peered networks

Techniques for a license manager service of a cloud system to provide users with the ability to activate and run licensed applications in the cloud system. Manually tracking the usage of software licenses for licensed applications can be cumbersome and error-prone. Further, the process of activating the licenses for third-party applications may be difficult or impossible depending on the activation protocols and procedures put in place by the application providers. The license manager may provide users with the ability to activate and use licensed applications, and may further provide users with a managed experience for activating the licenses for the applications. The license manager may launch licensed applications on virtual resources in a user's VPC, manage the process for activating the licensed applications with third-party providers, and provide the users with access to licensed applications that have been activated and configured by the license manager.

Managed activation of licensed software

Applications may execute using resources from multiple environments or ecosystems, such as may include virtual resources from a virtual resource environment hosted on physical resources of a cloud provider environment. An event manager in the cloud provider environment can obtain virtualization performance data from the virtual resource environment, as well as performance data from within the cloud provider environment. This data can be fed to an inference engine that can correlate information from the separate environments, and these correlations can be used to generate recommendations for performance adjustments in either the physical or virtual resource environment.

Determining application performance correlations across isolated network environments

Systems and methods are provided for on-demand code execution that uses a client's host computing environment with native hypervisors. The client's host computing device receives a configuration application library. An agent process is executed on the host computing device from the configuration application library. The agent process is executed in association with a first user profile that gives the process rights to configure the client host computing device. The agent process receives, from a service external to the client host computing environment/device/native hypervisor, a code-execution request on behalf of a second user profile. The agent process provisions an execution environment on behalf of the second user profile. The execution environment runs on the native hypervisor. The code instructions are executed in the execution environment under the second user profile. The agent process monitors the code execution and receives a status regarding the execution of the code in the execution environment. The agent process further transmits the status back to the service.

Native-hypervisor based on-demand code execution system

Techniques are described for enabling a software modernization system to automatically map binary executable files and other runtime artifacts (e.g., application binaries, Java ARchive (JAR) files, .NET Dynamic Link Library (DLL) files, process identifiers, etc.) to source code associated with the binary executable files, e.g., as part of modernization processes aimed at migrating users' applications to a cloud service provider's infrastructure. A software modernization service of a cloud provider network provides discovery agents and other tools that are capable of creating an inventory of users' software applications and collecting profile data about the software applications. Various techniques are described for automatically identifying the source code associated with software applications identified by a discovery agent in a user's computing environment, thereby improving the efficiency of various software modernization analyses and other modernization processes.

Automatically mapping binary executable files to source code by a software modernization system

Disclosed are various embodiments for the extraction of isolated nodes during source code refactoring. A graph model representative of a computing application is generated having nodes and bridges that connect some nodes to other nodes. An application component corresponding to a selected one of the nodes may be extracted from the computing application. An independently deployable component of the computing application may be generated and deployed on a network service such that the independently deployable component is accessible through a network-based call.

Automated extraction of isolated nodes during source code refactoring

Techniques for managing customer license agreements are described. In one embodiment, a user-specified resource metric of a license model and a user-specified limit of the user-specified resource metric are obtained. A request for permission to launch a new compute resource at a computing device of the provider network is obtained from a service within a provider network. The new compute resource having a property that is an amount of the user-specified metric. A determination is made that a launch of the new compute resource would cause the user-specified limit to be exceeded, and the request the request to launch the new compute resource is denied.

Rule-based resource management system

Techniques are described for enabling a software modernization assessment service to train and use ML models to automatically generate modernization assessment recommendations for users' software applications and systems. A modernization assessment service collects historical assessment data reflecting past modernization processes and assessments (e.g., application profile information and associated modernization strategies and tools used in past modernization projects). The modernization assessment service uses the historical assessment data to train one or more ML models (e.g., classifiers) that can be used to automatically identify relevant modernization strategies, services, and tools for given software application or system. Responsive to user requests to generate modernization assessment recommendations, the modernization assessment service can use the trained models to automatically generate modernization recommendations and reports.

Machine learning-based software application modernization assessments

The prioritization of large memory page mapping is a function of the access bits in the L1 page table. In a first phase of operation, the number of set access bits in each of the L1 page tables is counted periodically and a current count value is calculated therefrom. During the first phase, no pages are mapped large even if identified as such. After the first phase, the current count value is used to prioritize among potential large memory pages to determine which pages to map large. The system continues to calculate the current count value even after the first phase ends. When using hardware assist, the access bits in the nested page tables are used and when using software MMU, the access bits in the shadow page tables are used for large page prioritization.

System and method to prioritize large memory page allocation in virtualized systems

A checkpointing fault tolerance network architecture enables a backup computer system to be remotely located from a primary computer system. An intermediary computer system is situated between the primary computer system and the backup computer system to manage the transmission of checkpoint information to the backup VM in an efficient manner. The intermediary computer system is networked to the primary VM through a first connection and is networked to the backup VM through a second connection. The intermediary computer system identifies updated data corresponding to memory pages that have been less frequently modified by the primary VM and transmits such updated data to the backup VM through the first connection. In such manner, the intermediary computer system holds back updated data corresponding to more frequently modified memory pages, since such memory pages may be more likely to be updated again in the future.

Method and system for enabling checkpointing fault tolerance across remote virtual machines

A checkpointing fault tolerance network architecture enables a backup computer system to be remotely located from a primary computer system. An intermediary computer system is situated between the primary computer system and the backup computer system to manage the transmission of checkpoint information to the backup VM in an efficient manner. The intermediary computer system is networked to the primary VM through a first connection and is networked to the backup VM through a second connection. The intermediary computer system identifies updated data corresponding to memory pages that have been least recently modified by the primary VM and transmits such updated data to the backup VM through the first connection. In such manner, the intermediary computer system holds back updated data corresponding to more recently modified memory pages, since such memory pages may be more likely to be updated again in the future.

Embodiments include a checkpointing fault tolerance network architecture enables a first computer system to be remotely located from a second computer system. An intermediary computer system is situated between the first computer system and the second computer system to manage the transmission of checkpoint information from the first computer system to the second computer system in an efficient manner. The intermediary computer system responds to requests from the second computer system for updated data corresponding to memory pages selected by the second computer system, or memory pages identified through application of policy information defined by the second computer system.

Policy-based checkpointing fault tolerance across remote virtual machines

A system for identifying an exiting process and removing traces and shadow page table pages corresponding to the process' page table pages. An accessed minimum virtual address is maintained corresponding to an address space. In one embodiment, whenever a page table entry corresponding to the accessed minimum virtual address changes from present to not present, the process is determined to be exiting and removal of corresponding trace and shadow page table pages is begun. In a second embodiment, consecutive present to not-present PTE transitions are tracked for guest page tables on a per address space basis. When at least two guest page tables each has at least four consecutive present to not-present PTE transitions, a next present to not-present PTE transition event in the address space leads to the corresponding guest page table trace being dropped and the shadow page table page being removed.

System and method to reduce trace faults in software MMU virtualization

Hardware interrupts are routed to one of multiple processors of a virtualized computer system based on priority values assigned to the codes being executed by the processors. Each processor dynamically updates a priority value associated with code being executed thereby, and when a hardware interrupt is generated, the hardware interrupt is routed to the processor that is executing a code with the lowest priority value to handle the hardware interrupt. As a result, routing of the interrupts can be biased away from processors that are executing high priority tasks or where context switch might be computationally expensive.
