Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive data from both a source base station and a target base station during handover. For example, the UE may refrain from resetting or reestablishing media access control (MAC) and packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer configurations until after a successful access procedure is performed with the target base station. In some cases, a single radio link control (RLC)/PDCP stack may be used during handover procedures. A source base station may, for example, forward data to a target base station after receiving a handover execution message. A UE may identify and resolve any duplicate data sent by both base stations during the transition. Additional signaling may be used (e.g., during the radio resource control (RRC) configuration) to indicate that a UE supports dual link handover.

Certain aspects relate to methods and apparatus for conveying system information by a base station, comprising broadcasting a first system information common to each cell of a group of cells in an area and broadcasting a second system information that can vary between cells in the group of cells, wherein the second system information is broadcast more frequently than the first system information.

Enhanced system access for E-UTRAN

The disclosure relates in some aspects to forbidden area procedures and connection release management for a user terminal (UT). Forbidden area-related procedures include, for example, using a special paging area code (PAC) in conjunction with a forbidden area, defining a location reporting threshold for a UT based on the proximity of the UT to a forbidden area, or using a default paging area code if a service restriction for a UT has ended. Connection release management includes, for example, a UT sending a request to cause the release of a Radio Connection that the UT no longer needs, or a UT sending a Location Indication (e.g., including a flag requesting release of a connection) to release the connection used for location reporting when a UT is done sending the location information and is going to go back to idle mode.

Forbidden area procedures and connection release management

The disclosure relates in some aspects to managing paging area information for a user terminal (UT) and connection signaling. In some aspects, paging area information is provided for an idle UT by defining a default paging area code (PAC) that is known by the network and the UT. In some aspects, paging area information is communicated via connection signaling. In some aspects, connection signaling may be used to force a UT to invoke an update procedure (e.g., a reconnection).

Paging area procedures and connection signaling

Techniques for managing handovers in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band may provide that a serving base station may receive one or more base station measurement reports and one or more UE measurement reports. The base station measurement reports may include information associated with one or more devices that may transmit signals using an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band. The UE measurement reports may include information associated with one or more devices that may generate interfering signals at the UE, which may include interfering signals from one or more devices that are not detected by the serving base station. The serving base station may, in some examples, determine whether to handover the UE to a second base station based at least in part on the base station measurement report and the UE measurement report.

Techniques for managing handovers in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band

Certain aspects relate to methods and apparatus for discovering whether one or more enhanced capabilities are supported by devices (e.g., user equipment (UE), base station (BS), etc.) in a network. The enhanced capabilities may include, for example, the ability to support certain low latency procedures, enhanced component carrier (eCC) capability, and the like. The devices in the network may perform one or more handover-related procedures (e.g., cell selection/reselection, make-before-break handover, etc.) and/or other procedures (e.g., QoS negotiation, etc.) based, at least in part, on support for the one or more enhanced capabilities.

Low latency and/or enhanced component carrier discovery for services and handover

Certain aspects relate to methods and apparatus for wireless communications, comprising determining to use a reduced paging cycle to page a user equipment (UE) of a first type that supports the reduced paging cycle, the reduced paging cycle having a shorter period relative to a paging cycle used with UEs of a second type which do not support the reduced paging cycle, and paging the UE of the first type in accordance with the reduced paging cycle. Certain aspects relate to methods and apparatus for conveying system information by a base station, comprising broadcasting a first system information common to each cell of a group of cells in an area and broadcasting a second system information that can vary between cells in the group of cells, wherein the second system information is broadcast more frequently than the first system information.

Methods, systems, and devices are described for decreasing user plane latency in a wireless communication system. This may include routing a portion of bearer traffic to or from a UE through a local or serving gateway, or within or between base stations, rather than via the core network. In some examples, techniques for selected internet protocol flow ultra-low latency (SIPFULL) for systems in which users may have subscribed to enhanced services may be employed. The network may, for instance, authorize SIPFULL functionalities for UEs per access point name (APN) based on individual services subscribed by the UE to improve overall quality of service (QoS). In some examples, a UEs latency requirements or SIPFULL authorizations may affect mobility operations.

Selected IP flow ultra low latency

Access terminals are adapted to facilitate extended time periods for maintaining PPP sessions. According to one example, an access terminal can communicate with a network entity to establish a PPP session maintained by an extended time period. The extended time frame can be different (e.g., greater or less) than a default time period for maintaining the PPP session. For instance, the access terminal may establish a PPP session including a PPP connection. The access terminal may also send a persistence indicator to the network entity to cause setting the extended time period for maintaining the PPP session. The network entity may receive the persistence indicator and accordingly employ a differing time period (e.g., an extended time period) for maintaining the PPP session. Other aspects, embodiments, and features are also included.

Devices and methods for facilitating extended time periods for maintaining PPP sessions

Aspects described herein relate to receiving communications in contention-based radio access technologies (RAT). Communication resources can be activated for monitoring one or more channels related to a contention-based RAT based at least in part on a discontinuous receive (DRX) cycle. The one or more channels related to the contention-based RAT can be monitored in one or more time periods following activating the communication resources to determine whether communications are received from an access network node. An on-duration timer during which the communication resources remain active to receive the communications in the contention-based RAT can be initialized based at least in part on determining that the communications are received from the access network node. The communication resources can be deactivated following expiration of the on-duration timer.

Discontinuous receive for contention-based radio access technologies

Semi-connected state operation for UEs in multiple-access networks is described. In the semi-connected state, UEs may monitor system information and paging, and mobility may be UE-controlled. Base stations may determine whether to transition UEs from the connected state to the semi-connected state based on capabilities, priority, data connections, or loading conditions. Base stations may maintain context information and logical traffic connections for UEs while UEs continue to be served by the base station in the semi-connected state. Thus, when a transition from the semi-connected state to the connected state occurs, the base station does not have to re-establish security parameters, nor re-establish logical traffic connections within the network for carrying control plane and user plane data for the UE. Context information for semi-connected state UEs may be shared between neighboring base stations or base stations within a context area. The techniques may be applied to LTE/LTE-A networks.

Enhanced connection management for multiple access networks

Disclosed are examples in which the acknowledgement channel is used for retransmitting a frame received with error. A receiver is configured to transmit an acknowledgment for a frame when the frame is decoded following receipt of the last Pilot Control Group (PCG) of the same frame. The transmitter is configured to receive the acknowledgment of an earlier frame during a subsequent frame, and not to retransmit the earlier frame. The two frames may be adjacent. During connection setup negotiation, the system can determine the values of ack_mask1 defining allowed times for the receiver to acknowledge successful decoding of the subsequent frame, and ack_mask2 defining allowed times for the receiver to acknowledge successful decoding of the earlier frame. The two mask values provide non-overlapping allowed times, so the receiver can acknowledge within the subsequent frame (1) successful decoding of the earlier frame, and (2) successful decoding of the subsequent frame.
