An electronic device enclosure configured to shield against electromagnetic interference (EMI). The electronic device enclosure includes an electronic device-enclosure base and at least one laterally disposed blunt boss. The electronic device-enclosure base includes a bottom, and sides and attached to the bottom in a boxlike configuration. The laterally disposed blunt boss is configured so as to be disposed between, and to couple electrically, a side of the electronic device-enclosure base and a vertical flange of an electronic device-enclosure cover. The electronic device-enclosure base and the electronic device-enclosure cover are configurable with respect to said laterally disposed blunt boss to shield an interior space enclosed by the electronic device-enclosure base and the electronic device-enclosure cover against EMI at a resonant frequency of a slot of the electronic device enclosure. A hard-disk drive including a disk enclosure configured to shield against EMI and a method for assembling the hard-disk drive are also provided.

Electronic device enclosure configured to shield against electromagnetic interference

Approaches for implementing a conductive gasket comprising carbon nanotubes for deployment within a sensitive environment, such as an environment containing equipment whose operation may be affected by airborne particles or electromagnetic energy. For example, a hard-disk drive (HDD) comprises an enclosure that is formed by coupling a first component, such as a cover, to a second component, such as a base, using one or more gaskets. The one or more gaskets may be constructed using a material that includes carbon nanotubes. The composition of the material used to construct the gaskets may be selected to achieve a desired electromagnetic conductivity for the gaskets. In this way, the gaskets of the enclosure of the HDD do not render the enclosure vulnerable to external electromagnetic energy and are constructed in a manner that does not introduce any harmful airborne contaminants within the protective enclosure of the HDD.

Use of carbon nanotubes to form conductive gaskets deployed in sensitive environments

A hard disk drive enclosure with conductive paths. A base plate comprising an electrically conductive material with at least one contact surface that allows for an electrically conductive path, wherein the at least one contact surface has a substantially flat surface. A cover comprising an electrically conductive material comprising at least one tab with a substantially flat surface for contacting the at least one contact surface of the base plate, wherein the at least one tab contacts the at least one contact surface of the base plate with a force and forms an electrically conductive path between the cover and the based plate, and wherein the at least one tab deforms upon the contact with the at least one contact surface of the base plate with the force.

Conductive paths in a hard disk drive enclosure

A disk drive system for both providing shock protection to the disk drive and reducing electromagnetic interference. A printed circuit board is provided having a shock sensitive device such as a disk drive and having electronic circuit components, e.g., data handling components capable of operating at a high data rate mounted thereon. The printed circuit board is provided with an electrical ground path and with at least one shock mount point. The shock mount point is provided with a conductive pad which is electrically connected to the electrical ground path of the printed circuit board. An electrically conductive carrier is provided for supporting the printed circuit board. At least one shock mount system is provided for attaching the printed circuit board to the carrier. The shock mount system comprises a shock mount grommet coated with an electrically conductive coating for electrically connecting the conductive pad to the carrier. The electrically conductive coating may be a uniform coating of copper paint to preserve the shock absorbing characteristics of the shock mount. The shock mount system may additionally comprise a compression fixture for compressing the shock mount grommet into contact with the printed circuit board conductive pad and into contact with the carrier.
