A method of making free-standing ALD-coated plasmonic nanoparticles. The method comprises providing a plurality of semiconductor quantum dots. One or more conformal layers of dielectric material are deposited over the quantum dots to form dielectric-coated quantum dots. A conformal metallic nanoshell is deposited over the dielectric-coated quantum dots to form plasmonic nanoparticles. At least one layer chosen from i) the conformal layers of dielectric material and ii) the conformal metallic nanoshell is deposited using a vapor phase atomic layer deposition (ALD) process. Plasmonic nanoparticles and systems employing the nanoparticles are also disclosed.

Improved Raman Fiber Laser (RFL) generators may include a mid-infrared fiber, e.g., a fiber comprising a tellurite glass, a chalcogenide glass, a fluoride glass, or similar material. A phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating may be inscribed in the fiber. A pump laser generator may be coupled with the fiber in order to supply a pump laser to the fiber. When stimulated by the pump laser, the RFL generator may emit an output laser having a mid-infrared wavelength. A tuner may be used to tune the output laser.

Raman fiber laser

The present invention provides an optical fiber and method of making the same. The optical fiber includes a body for transmitting light. The body has an anisotropic refractive index wherein the anisotropic refractive index offsets changes in the refractive index of the fiber caused by bending the fiber. The fiber body may further include a core and cladding.

Method of fabrication of low-bend-loss single mode fibers of very large mode areas

The present invention concerns an optical molecular sensing device and related method. The optical molecular sensing device has an optical resonator adapted to be connected to an excitation source. The excitation source may be a laser operating at a 2.7-2.8 um spectral range. The optical molecular sensing device has an emission spectrum comprised of a plurality wavelengths. Also included are a detection unit and a RF frequency counter to detect at least one RF beat note resulting from detecting the emission spectrum of the optical resonator. A change in frequency of the RF beat note indicates the presence of a target molecule.

WGM-based molecular sensors

An optical resonator made from an elongated fiber having a proximal and distal end. A sphere is created on the distal end by locating the distal end in cylindrically symmetrical heating zone along a centerline. For some embodiments, the distal end is rapidly cooled by allowing it to retract away from the heating zone along the centerline during the formation and solidification of the molten microsphere. The resulting optical resonator has an intrinsic quality factor greater than 10over the 2.0 to 3.2 &#x3bc;m MIR wavelength range.

High efficiency light absorbing and light emitting nanostructures

Apparatus, systems, and methods to construct and operate a radio frequency self-regenerated locked optical oscillator can be used in a variety of applications. Stable synchronization of an optical oscillator can be achieved by driving an amplitude modulator with a radio frequency (RF) signal regenerated from the cavity of the optical oscillator. Continuously tunable and precisely wavelength-switchable fiber lasers combine fiber Bragg gratings and the transmissive filtering properties of high finesse fiber Fabry-Perot filters. This laser arrangement adapts to multiple wavelength ranges based on the selections of fiber Bragg grating and gain medium and their arrangement to create a wavelength-modulatable and simultaneously rapidly wavelength-switchable narrow linewidth all-fiber laser design. The invention provides a reagentless assay kit for analyte in a sample comprising a modular affinity assembly including at least one sensor unit comprising a ligand having binding affinity for the analyte (affinity module) operatively associated with a reporter probe (reporter module) responsive to changes in the sensor unit induced by analyte/receptor complex formation by transduction of a characteristic detectable signal. Assays employing the modular assembly are also provided.

An improved highly doped waveguide is provided which comprises a waveguide employing an Er dopant and Pr sensitizer ions. The present invention also provides a method of efficient coupling from an optical source into a waveguide using a rotated optical element.
