Application data collected by an IDS (intrusion detection system) on the data communication network and concerning applications executing on stations coupled to the plurality of access points, is received. Additionally, firewall rules for applications from a firewall device coupled to the data communication network and providing firewall services to the plurality of access points, including outbound traffic from the plurality of access points, are received. The firewall rules can be parsed to expose configured actions for applications. A customized application control policy is prepared for each particular application for implementation on the network edge by at least one of the plurality of access points.

For QoS (quality of service) requirements of a session at a first access point and a wireless station, a cost function value is calculated for the specific session based on a number of network packets to be processed in the queue and the identified QoS requirement. It is determined whether another of the plurality of access points within range of the specific session can better serve the identified QoS requirement than the first access point by comparing the cost function value for the specific session against at the first access point against at least a cost function value for a second access point.

Cooperative access points for quality of service (QoS) requirements in wireless local access networking (WLAN)

Requests for roaming service agreements intended for an ANQP server to initiate offloading an ongoing voice call from a cellular network associated with a SP for the station to the Wi-Fi network are received. A connection is made if the SP matches a list of SP providers for which the AP has a roaming service agreement. Responsive to not matching the list of SP providers, the SP miss and location data of the station is stored. Statistics concerning stored AP misses and identifying a threshold being met for a particular SP are generated. AI identifies SP updates needed from statistics concerning SP misses for the particular SP for which no roaming service agreement has been established with the AP.

A set of priority parameters for network traffic on the data communication network is stored. Based on a specific application determination, based at least in part on a source IP address, a source port address, a destination IP address, a destination port address and a protocol, an airtime fairness ratio (ATR) for the session with a specific station from the set of priority parameters concerning application priority is assigned. A higher ATR results in more packets being stored in the queue for processing and a lower ATR results in fewer packets being stored in the queue for processing, thereby affecting airtime.
