A powertrain comprises a planetary gearing arrangement that includes two sun gear members, two ring gear members, a single carrier member, and an interconnecting member that connects either the two sun gear members or the two ring gear members. The powertrain includes an input member and an output member, one of which is connectable to the carrier member and the other of which is connectable to the first ring gear member. A first electric machine and a second electric machine are included in the powertrain. The second electric machine is operatively connected to the first sun gear member to drive the first sun gear member, and the first electric machine is operatively connected to drive that one of the second ring gear member and the second sun gear member which is not connected to the interconnecting member. A brake is selectively engageable to hold the input member stationary.

Powertrain with compound-split hybrid transmission having a reduced ravigneaux gear set

A powertrain is provided that includes a hybrid transmission with an input member, an output member, and a stationary member, and a first and a second electric machine. Only a single planetary gear set having a first member, a second member, and a third member is operatively connected between the input member and the output member. The first, the second, and the third members include a ring gear member, a sun gear member, and a carrier member. The powertrain includes a first, a second, a third, and a fourth selectively engageable torque-transmitting mechanism. Selective engagement of a different one or ones of the torque-transmitting mechanisms and selective operation of one or both electric machines establishes a series operating mode, an input-split operating mode, at least one electric-only operating mode, and at least one fixed gear operating mode between the input member and the output member.

Hybrid transmission with single planetary gear set and multiple operating modes

A hybrid powertrain has an engine, an input member, an output member, and a stationary member, and includes a single planetary gear set having a first, a second, and a third member. The input member is connected for common rotation with the engine. The output member is connected for common rotation with the second member. A first and a second motor/generator are provided, as well as five torque-transmitting mechanisms, including only one brake. The torque-transmitting mechanisms are engagable in different combinations to establish at least two electric-only operating mode, at least two engine-only operating mode, and at least three electrically-variable operating modes. In one embodiment, an electric torque converter operating mode is provided, and may be the default mode in case of motor/generator failure.

Single planetary hybrid powertrain with at least three electrically-variable operating modes

A powertrain includes an input member, an output member, and a stationary member. A first and a second electric motor/generator are provided. Only two planetary gear sets are used, each having a respective first, second, and third member. An interconnecting member connects one of the members of a first one of the planetary gear sets to one of the members of a second one of the planetary gear sets. The input member, the output member, the first motor/generator and the second motor/generator are each continuously connected for common rotation with a different one of the members of the planetary gear sets that is not connected by the interconnecting member. Four brakes are each selectively engageable to ground a different respective one of the members of the planetary gear sets that is not connected by the interconnecting member to the stationary member.

Powertrain with two planetary gear sets and two motor/generators for hybrid vehicle

A hybrid powertrain for a vehicle includes a prime mover, which may be an engine, and a transmission that has an input member configured for connection with the prime mover to receive torque from the prime mover, an output member, and a stationary member. A first motor/generator and a second motor/generator are provided as additional motive sources. A first planetary gear set and a second planetary gear set are included, each having a respective first member, second member, and third member. Only one clutch is operatively connected to the transmission, and it is selectively engagable to ground the input member and the first member of the second planetary gear set to the stationary member.
