The method includes: receiving a sizing request including an asset protection policy covering an asset of the backup infrastructure, the asset protection policy at least specifying the asset; based on receiving the sizing request: creating an asset snapshot of the asset; mounting the asset snapshot to obtain a mounted asset snapshot through which asset snapshot data of the asset snapshot is accessible; partitioning the asset snapshot data into a plurality of asset snapshot data slices; computing, at least based on a cardinality of the plurality of asset snapshot data slices, a number of proxy nodes of the backup infrastructure required to collectively perform a prospective backup operation entailing the asset snapshot data; and providing, in reply to the sizing request, a sizing response at least specifying the number of proxy nodes required to collectively perform the prospective backup operation.

Accordingly, the system may allow different clients of a backup service to efficiently and seamlessly interact with the different third-party object storage providers via a single cloud-based component. To provide such object-storage-agnostic functionality, the cloud-based component may include a function library that includes object-storage-specific functions. For example, the cloud-based component may invoke a specific set of operations that interact with a storage API provided by a particular object storage provider.

Described is a system (and method) for specialized data management when performing incremental backups to a cloud-based object storage. When backing up client data, the server may utilize incremental backups to conserve the amount of storage space required on the object storage. However, the server may implement a configuration that enables full reconstruction of the client data at the time of recovery. To provide such capabilities, the server may leverage a specialized metadata database. The metadata database may be an embedded database maintained by the server. The server may leverage the metadata database to provide further storage efficiencies by storing certain incremental backup data exclusively within the metadata database. Accordingly, the server may implement a data management configuration as part of a backup service that conserves storage usage, and as a result, storage costs when using on a third-party cloud-based object storage.

Described is a system for managing backup data stored on a cloud-based object storage irrespective of the storage provider. The system may include a server (or gateway) that provides a backup service, and acts as an intermediary between a client device and object storage. To provide such capabilities, the system may manage an application programming interface (API) that provides a uniform set of methods to a client device irrespective of the destination object storage provider. A function library may include provider-specific functions that invoke corresponding storage-layer operations provided by the destination object storage. The server may also manage an operation pool to schedule operations and saturate bandwidth to the object storage. The server may also implement a specialized metadata database to provide further storage efficiencies by storing certain backup data exclusively within the metadata database.

Embodiments described herein relate to a method for managing file based backups (FBBs). The method may include obtaining a FBB mount request for a FBB mount of a FBB from an application, wherein the application is executing in a production host environment and the FBB is stored on backup storage; in response to the FBB mount request: enabling access to a portion of the FBB by the application; notifying a cyber sense device that the access is enabled; providing, to the cyber sense device, a storage location of the portion of the FBB for which access was enabled; receiving, from the cyber sense device, a security event notification; and performing, in response to the security event notification, a security action set.

System and method for securing instant access of data in file based backups in a backup storage system using metadata files

Described is a system (and method) for application-based packing for storing backup data within an object storage. More particularly, the system may efficiently pack backup files into objects having a specialized size by accounting for the source and size of the backup file. For example, the system may determine whether backup files associated with a particular application may be stored within individual objects or packed together within a shared object. Accordingly, by accounting for such criteria the system may perform an intelligent allocation of backup data within a cloud-based object storage. The system may be implemented as part of an incremental backup infrastructure. Accordingly, when allocating the backup files amongst objects, the system may also store specialized metadata to preserve the ability to perform a reconstruction of data (e.g. synthetically) as if a full backup was performed.

Application-based packing for storing backup data to an object storage

A method for managing file based backups (FBBs) includes obtaining, by a FBB metadata file manager and by an application, a file request for a file stored in a FBB, wherein the FBB is stored in a backup storage system, identifying, using a FBB metadata file of the FBB, a storage location of the file, initiating generation of a temporary storage device, storing a copy of the file in the temporary storage device using the storage location and the FBB, and initiating, after the storing, access to the copy of the file for the application.

A method for managing file based backups (FBBs) includes obtaining, by a backup agent, a FBB generation request for a file system at a point in time, in response to the FBB generation request: identifying a target backup storage system in which to store the FBB, identifying a target exposed application programming interface (API) associated with the target backup storage system, generating a FBB corresponding to the FBB generation request, wherein the FBB comprises a FBB metadata file, wherein the FBB is in a common data streaming format (CDSF), generating an API command based on the FBB and the target exposed API, and initiating storage of the FBB in the target backup storage system using the API command.

One example method includes performing delta operations to protect data. A delta queue is provided that allows a replica volume to be rolled forwards and backwards in time. When rolling the replica volume forward, an undo delta is created such that the replica volume can be moved backwards after being moved forward. When rolling the replica volume backwards, a forward delta is created such that the replica volume can be moved forwards after being moved backwards.

Near continuous data protection without using snapshots

A changed block tracking (CBT) driver at a production host tracks, in a bitmap, changes made to a source volume of the production host since a last backup. A command is received to perform a differential backup of the source volume. A request is issued to a copy service to take a snapshot of the source volume. The bitmap is embedded into the snapshot. The snapshot is mounted on a backup proxy, different from the production host. The backup proxy retrieves the bitmap from the snapshot and conducts the differential backup of the source volume to secondary storage, thereby backing up the changes made to the source volume since the last backup according to the bitmap.
