A wireless user device wirelessly receives an indication of selected resource blocks in a frequency channel that are selected for radio signal measurement and unselected resource blocks in the frequency channel that are unselected for the radio signal measurement. The wireless user device wirelessly measures a radio signal metric for the selected resource blocks in the radio channel and does not measure the radio signal metric for the unselected resource blocks in the radio channel. The wireless user device wirelessly transfers the radio signal metric for the selected resource blocks in the radio channel. The wireless user device wirelessly receives a schedule for the selected resource blocks in the radio channel. The wireless user device wirelessly receives data over the selected resource blocks in the radio channel based on the schedule.

Determining radio signal metrics for specified resource blocks

Methods, systems, and media for improving pairing of user equipment (UE) in a Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system using carrier aggregation are provided. Component carriers (CC) used for communication with UEs in the network may undergo routine beamforming calibration checks to determine if the CCs are calibrated. If a CC fails calibration, then UEs that communicate with the CC as their primary component carrier (PCC) may not be receiving the high data throughput typically experienced through the PCC. In response to determining that a CC fails calibration, a computing device may pair UEs with another CC as their PCC until the original CC passes a calibration check. The computing device may determine which CC to pair to the UEs based on uplink capacity, bandwidth, or a passed calibration check.

Adaptive primary component carrier switching in massive MIMO based on beamforming calibration status

In a wireless access node, Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) circuitry identifies a noise metric for the wireless access node. The PDCP circuitry receives Downlink (DL) user data for User Equipment (UE). The PDCP circuitry allocates a first portion of the DL data and a second portion of the DL data based on the noise metric. The PDCP circuitry transfers the first portion of the DL data over first Radio Link Control (RLC) circuitry to first MAC circuitry. The PDCP circuitry transfers the second portion of the DL data over second RLC circuitry to second MAC circuitry. The first MAC circuitry schedules wireless delivery of the first portion of the DL data and transfers the first portion of the DL data to the UE over first Physical Layer (PHY) circuitry. The second MAC circuitry schedules wireless delivery of the second portion of the DL data and transfers the second portion of the DL data to the UE over second PHY circuitry.

Simultaneous wireless communication service over fifth generation new radio (5GNR) and long term evolution (LTE)

A Radio Access Network (RAN) wirelessly serves a User Equipment (UE) over a frequency channel based on a radio signal metric. The RAN comprises baseband circuitry and a radio. The baseband circuitry determines when multiple Physical Cell Identifiers (PCIs) are available to serve the UE. In response, the baseband circuitry selects some resource blocks in the frequency channel and generates a UE instruction to measure the radio signal metric for the selected resource blocks. The radio receives the UE instruction for the baseband circuitry and wirelessly transfers the UE instruction to the UE. The radio wirelessly receives a measurement report from the UE that indicates the radio signal metric for the selected resource blocks. The radio transfers the measurement report to the baseband circuitry. The baseband circuitry receives the measurement report and responsively schedules the UE in the selected resource blocks based on the radio signal metric.

A method and system for controlling how many carriers to aggregate together for carrier-aggregation service of a UE. A base station could take into account how many MIMO layers a UE would support respectively for each of various candidate quantities of carriers, and the base station could select the candidate quantity of carriers that would result in use of a highest aggregate total number of MIMO layers. Further, the selection could involve mapping UE-reported rank to a quantity of carriers, with the rank being inversely proportional to the selected quantity of carriers. The base station could then configure carrier-aggregation service of the UE with the selected quantity of carriers.

Controlling level of carrier aggregation based on MIMO-layer support

A method and system for controlling wireless transmission to a user equipment device (UE) while the UE is served on a plurality of carriers each having a respective downlink bandwidth. An example method includes determining that a first carrier of the plurality of carriers has a wider downlink bandwidth than a second carrier of the plurality of carriers. And the method then includes, based at least on the determining, causing transmission to the UE on the first carrier to use a greater quantity of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) layers than transmission to the UE on the second carrier.

Systems and methods are provided for dynamically is provided for dynamically modifying the per-channel maximum transmit power limits of a user device using E-Utran/New Radio Dual Connectivity (ENDC) to communicate with a wireless communications network. Uplink channel grants and maximum total transmit power of the user device are determined. The power headroom of un-granted uplink channels is re-allocated to granted uplink channels, allowing the ENDC user device to more efficiently utilize the user device's maximum total transmit power to communicate with the wireless communications network.

A wireless network serves User Equipment (UEs) over Fifth Generation New Radio (5GNR) and Long Term Evolution (LTE). 5GNR circuitry allocates downlink data into a 5GNR portion and an LTE portion. The 5GNR circuitry transfers the 5GNR data portion to the UEs and transfers the LTE data portion to LTE circuitry. The LTE circuitry wirelessly transfers the LTE data portion to the UEs. The 5GNR and/or LTE circuitry measure UL noise and modify the 5GNR portion and the LTE portion based on the UL noise. The 5GNR circuitry allocates additional downlink data into a modified 5GNR portion and a modified LTE portion. The 5GNR circuitry wirelessly transfers the modified 5GNR data portion to the UEs. The 5GNR circuitry transfers the modified LTE data portion to the LTE circuitry. The LTE circuitry wirelessly transfers the modified LTE data portion to the UEs.

A wireless user device exchanges data with wireless networks over wireless channels and measures communication metrics for the wireless channels. The wireless user device transfers the communication metrics to other wireless user devices and receives other communication metrics from the other wireless user devices. The wireless user device processes the communication metrics to select an optimal set of communication channels. The wireless user device disables the unselected ones of the wireless channels. The wireless user device exchanges wireless data with the wireless networks over the optimal set of wireless communication channels.

Wireless user device communications over optimal wireless communication channels

A method and system to help control transmission over an air interface from a base station to a served WCD. When the base station has a threshold small quantity of data to transmit over the air to a WCD, the base station will schedule the transmission to occur in a downlink PRB of a special subframe, rather than in a PRB of a regular downlink subframe. As the downlink PRB of the special subframe likely has fewer useable resource elements than the PRB of the regular downlink subframe, this process could help to minimize waste of air interface resources resulting from not making use of resource elements in an allocated PRB.
