An extendable member diagnostic assembly determines performance of one or more components of a rotary steerable system. Based on the determined performance, an operation can be altered, such as a drilling operation. Performance may be based on measurements received from one or more sensors associated with components of the extendable member diagnostic assembly. For example, performance may be based on the time to transition a valve between states where the valve controls actuation of an extendable member, downhole temperature, downhole pressure or any other factors that affect performance of components that are used to perform the drilling operation. A controller receives the measurements from the one or more sensors and updates baseline parameters to determine an accurate performance. Using real time data to determine performance increases efficiency of an operation by eliminating unnecessary replacement of components and indicating that a downhole tool should be retrieved prior to failure.

Using solenoid characteristics for performance diagnostics on rotary steerable systems

A downhole telemetry method and system are disclosed. In some embodiment, a method includes driving a pulser device based on an input data stream, wherein driving the pulser device includes generating modulated pressure pulses including modulated pulse shapes within a fluid telemetry medium. In some embodiments in which bi-modulation is utilized, the method further includes driving the pulser device including modulating pressure pulses including pulse position modulating pressure pulses.

A mud pulse telemetry tool includes a dampener for reducing shock and vibration. The mud pulse telemetry tool includes a housing having a shoulder formed along an inner surface thereof, the housing including an orifice formed therein. A piston assembly is longitudinally movable in the housing between a retracted position and an extended position. The piston assembly includes a poppet disposable in the orifice in the extended position and a piston connected to the poppet. The dampener is disposed longitudinally between the piston and the shoulder, the piston being movable in contact with the dampener when the piston assembly is in the extended position.

The disclosed embodiments include systems and methods to improve downhole drilling. A representative system may include a rotary steering tool having a plurality of hydraulically actuated steering pad assemblies, a fluid outlet, and a variable-orifice valve positioned within a primary flow channel of the rotary steering tool, downhole from the steering pad assemblies, and uphole from a drill bit. The valve comprises a valve port having a variable-area orifice that can be controllably varied to dynamically adjust the magnitude of a pressure drop from a tool bore to a wellbore annulus formed by the inner boundary of the wellbore and an outer boundary of the tool.

A directional drilling system includes a rotary steerable tool. The rotary steerable tool includes an extendable member configured to extend outwardly from the rotary steerable tool upon actuation, and a geolocation electronics device configured to track a position of the rotary steerable tool and the extendable member and control actuation of the extendable member. The geolocation electronics device and extendable member are configured to rotate with the rotary steerable tool.

A drilling tool with power generation includes an outer housing and a driveshaft located at least partially within the outer housing and configured to rotate with respect to the outer housing via bearings located between the driveshaft and the outer housing. The drilling tool also includes an electromagnetic power generation device. The electromagnetic power generation device includes a coil and a magnet located within the housing. One of the coil and the magnet is coupled to the housing and the other is coupled to the driveshaft. Relative movement of the driveshaft with respect to the coil generates electrical power.

The disclosed embodiments relate to a rotary steering having a plurality of hydraulically actuated steering pad assemblies and a valve positioned between a primary flow channel of the rotary steering tool and an actuating piston of each of the plurality of steering pad assemblies. The representative valve includes a two-disk valve, with an uphole disk having a single, fixed-area aperture and a downhole disk having a plurality of independently variable-area orifices. Each of the independently variable valve orifices corresponds to one of a plurality of valve ports. In turn, each valve port being is fluidly coupled to, and operable to actuate, a corresponding piston of one of the plurality of steering pad assemblies. The independently variable-area orifices can be manipulated (gradually opened or closed) to vary the pressure drop across the tool, and thereby vary the magnitude of hydraulic force available to actuate the steering pad assemblies.

The disclosed embodiments include systems and methods to improve downhole drilling. A representative system may include a geostationary portion (e.g. a valve assembly) and a turbine coupled to the geostationary portion to cause counter-rotation of the geostationary portion relative to a drillstring in a default state. A generator that is also operable to act as a motor is coupled to the turbine, and is also coupled to a controller and an energy that may harness any excess energy generated by the turbine when the turbine is able to counter-rotate the geostationary portion at a faster rate than needed to maintain the geostationary portion in a rotationally static condition relative to the wellbore.

A rotary steerable tool for directional drilling includes a tool body including a flowbore for flowing pressurized fluid therethrough and a plurality of extendable members movably coupled to the tool body for selectively engaging a borehole wall, each extendable member including a piston for moving the extendable member to an extended position. The tool further includes a pressurized fluid supply flow path to provide fluid pressure from the flowbore to the pistons, and a plurality of linear actuators, each independently actuatable to control fluid pressure from the pressurized fluid supply flow path to a respective piston.

In accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure, systems and methods for a toolface control system is disclosed. The system includes, a rotating drill string of a drilling tool, an assembly located within the rotating drill string representing a current toolface of the drilling tool, and a controller configured to use pulse width modulation to adjust a rotational speed of the assembly to maintain the current toolface at a desired toolface.

In accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure, a hybrid drive for use within a rotary steerable drilling tool is provided. The hybrid drive may enable improved directional drilling performance of the rotary steerable drilling tool. The hybrid drive may include a prime mover for rotating a drilling component (e.g., cam used to counter-rotate a steering head) relative to a fully rotating outer housing of the rotary steerable tool. In addition, the hybrid drive may include an electrical motor/generator for adjusting the rotational speed of the cam in response to high frequency changes in rotational speed of the tool housing. The hybrid drive may also include a transmission coupled to the prime mover and the electrical motor/generator for providing mechanical energy from one or both of the prime mover and the motor/generator to rotate the cam (or other drilling component) within the rotary steerable tool.

Steering assemblies including a housing having an actuator positioned therein and operable to rotate a drive shaft. A planetary gearbox is positioned in the housing and includes a ring gear operatively coupled to the housing, a sun gear coupled to the drive shaft, and a planet carrier. A mechanical coupling operatively couples the ring gear to the housing such that rotation of the housing rotates the ring gear. The mechanical coupling is selected based on an ability of one or more mechanical parameters of the mechanical coupling to mitigate the stick-slip disturbance transmitted between the housing and the ring gear. An offset mandrel coupled to one of the sun gear and the planet carrier such that rotation of the one of the sun gear and the planet carrier causes the offset mandrel to correspondingly rotate, wherein the offset mandrel is independently rotatable with respect to the housing.
