This invention describes a process for producing copper alloys by rapid sdification in order to improve their strength and thermal stability after being exposed to elevated temperatures. The method used to rapidly solidify the molten alloy is either by use of a high pressure non-oxidizing gas spray to atomize the molten alloy into a powder or to pour the molten alloy onto a rotating wheel to form a ribbon which is then attrited into powder. The powder is canned, compacted to full density and cold worked to the desired shape.

Method of producing copper alloys with manganese and selenium to improve

A method for making uranium-tungsten alloy of high strength comprising raly chilling a molten solution of tungsten in uranium to form a ribbon. Subsequent to pulverizing and consolidation, heating effects a precipitation of tungsten in the uranium to effect significant strengthening. A strengthened uranium with 1/2-5%, by weight of tungsten is particularly useful for KE penetrators.

Precipitation strengthened uranium tungsten alloy

A method of casting high melting point metal such as refractory metals into ngots to provide substantially improved strength and density. A quantity of high melting point metal is placed in an arc area of a furnace having a 'T' shaped vacuum chamber with a pair of opposing electrodes which generate an arc to cause droplets of the metal to melt from the heat thereby generated. The droplets fall into a mold positioned to receive the droplets and shaped to form the desired ingot. The method includes an additional step of further heating the droplets as they fall into the mold with a plasma arc gun mounted inside the furnace. The gun is directed to impinge its heat torch to control the rate of solidification such that a small pool of the liquid phase is maintained on the ingot. The last step comprises solidifying the molten metal in the ingot by controlling the plasma arc gun and the heat generated from it.

A uranium-base alloy consists essentially of the formula U.sub.bal --Ti.sub.x --W.sub.y, where x ranges from about 0.5 to 1.0 and y ranges from about 0.25 to 2.0. The alloy exhibits high strength, good ductility and high density and is especially suited for use in ballistic penetration cores.

High density-high strength uranium-titanium-tungsten alloys

A uranium-base alloy consists essentially of the formula U.sub.bal -Ti.sub.x -Hf.sub.y, where 'x' ranges from about 0.5 to 1.0 and 'y' ranges from about 0.5 to 5.0. The alloy exhibits high strength, good ductility and high density and is especially suited for use in ballistic penetrator cores.

High density, high strength uranium-titanium-hafnium alloys

Copper alloys having high conductivity at room temperature and superior resistance to softening at elevated temperatures comprise oxygen-free copper containing small but effective amounts of selenium and manganese, and in particular about 4 to about 100 parts per million selenium and about 4 to about 100 parts per million manganese. The alloys can advantageously be used in place of copper-silver alloys, with a realization of improved properties and reduced cost.
