In summary, the present invention provides a variable bore ram assembly comprising a first ram and a second ram defining a central circular recess along the same axis as a wellbore. A plurality of packing members and support inserts form first and second packer assemblies define an interlocking connection to surround a tubular good, thereby sealing the wellbore. The rams have been designed to remove common contacts points with the inner wall of the ram cavity to withstand deformation. The first and second ram assemblies have inner sealing faces with cutout portions of elastomeric material to provide additional space for material during a close operation.

The present invention provides a dual interlocking v-shaped shear ram assembly comprising an upper ram and lower ram, each defining a v-shaped cutting surface. A plurality of angled surfaces on the upper ram and lower ram engage to form an interlocking connection that prevents rotation of either the upper ram or lower ram in the ram cavity and seals the wellbore. The upper ram has a surface along 90% to 100% of the length thereof that conforms to the surface of the corresponding ram cavity.

The present disclosure relates to a system that includes a shearing ram configured to mount in a blowout preventer. The shearing ram includes a body portion that may move along an axis of movement. The shearing ram also includes a sealing member disposed in a first surface of the body portion. The sealing member is biased away from the first surface in a crosswise direction relative to the axis of movement, such that the sealing member may engage a second surface of a second shearing ram when the first shearing ram and the second shearing ram overlap with one another with respect to the axis of movement.

A blowout preventer may be used for shearing an object positioned in a vertical bore extending through the blowout preventer. The blowout preventer includes a shear ram movable towards the tubular, the shear ram including a biasing mechanism for biasing against an interior surface of the blowout preventer body. In this way, the biasing mechanism urges the shear ram into axial engagement with an opposing shear ram movable towards the tubular during shearing operations. The biasing mechanism comprises a biasing member, such as a coiled spring, coned-disc spring, and/or coned-disc washer which urges the biasing mechanism into contact with the inner portion of the blowout preventer body.

A variable bore packer used in a blowout preventer to form a seal against different diameter tubular members for oil and gas drilling operations. The variable bore packer includes a packer member molded of elastomeric material with certain mechanical properties and including an inside curved surface. The packer also includes a plurality of packer inserts molded within the packer member to form an insert array. Additionally, the packer includes a protrusion extending from and bonded to the packer member inside curved surface, the protrusion including increased mechanical properties compared to the packer member. The packer member, the insert array, and the protrusion are molded into a unitary structure and sized to form a seal against the different diameter tubular members upon closure of the blowout preventer. Also, the insert array and the protrusion diminishing extrusion of the elastomeric material between the packer inserts and the tubular members.
