A vehicle system includes a first battery pack connected to a second battery pack via a flying capacitor multi-level inverter. The fling capacitor inverter has multiple inverter legs, with each inverter leg being arranged in a flying capacitor topology. A three phase motor is connected to the inverter. A controller connected to the motor and the inverter. The controller includes a memory storing instructions configured to cause the controller to control the inverter as a direct current (DC)-DC converter such that a circulating current passes through the motor, the first battery pack and the second battery pack.

Mixed chemistry battery pack power transfer using a multilevel flying capacitor inverter

A method for charging a battery pack via an offboard energy source uses an interleaved boost converter and closed-loop control. The energy source outputs a charging current via a DC charge port during a direct current fast-charging (DCFC) process. A controller detects a voltage disparity condition in which a voltage capability of the battery pack exceeds a voltage capability of the energy source. In response to this condition, a rise of the charging current over time is recorded as a current trajectory and an open-loop equivalent time constant is extracted from the current trajectory. A time constant of the PI control block is set substantially equal to the equivalent time constant. The PIM is controlled in closed-loop using proportional-integral control. The charging current is controlled in a continuous current conduction mode during the DCFC process.

A multi-phase power inverter for an electric propulsion system includes a plurality of H-type multilevel power converters arranged between a high-voltage DC power supply and an electric machine. The first SSR has an open state where current from the DCFC receptacle to the battery pack is interrupted and a closed state where current flows from the DCFC receptacle to the battery pack, the first SSR is configured to transition from the closed state to the open state prior to the first contactor, and current only flows from the DCFC receptacle to the battery pack when both the first contactor and the first SSR are in the closed state.
