A thermal mechanical treatment method includes consolidating a powder by a severe plastic deformation process and ageing the consolidated powder at low temperature. The method may include cryomilling the powder before consolidating the powder by a severe plastic deformation process; hot isostatic pressing the consolidated powder into a dense powder before aging the consolidated powder; hot extruding the dense powder into a stock shape before aging the consolidated powder; hot-working the stock shape on a gyrating forge at a predetermined temperature before aging the consolidated powder; or heating the consolidated powder to a predetermined temperature, and maintaining the consolidated powder at the predetermined temperature for a predetermined time.

Thermo-mechanical treatment of materials

A tool for deploying a wellbore plug in a well using flowable eutectic material is disclosed. A tool having a mandrel, an obstruction, and a flowable quantity of eutectic material in a solid state is positioned in the wellbore. The obstruction is actuated and the flowable material is heated to melt. The obstruction supports the flowed material as it cools to form a plug in the wellbore.

Degradable compositions, apparatus comprising same, and methods of use

A swellable packer device upon exposure to brine in a well. The device may be swellable to a substantially constant profile in spite of significant fluctuations in brine concentrations. Thus, the likelihood of packer failure due to under-swelling or over-swelling is reduced. Indeed, the packer may be employed for long-term operations or isolations ranging from a couple of weeks to twenty years or more without undue concern over packer failure from under or over swelling.

Swellable downhole device of substantially constant profile

A downhole device with compressive layer at the surface thereof. Such devices may be particularly well suited for survivability in the face of potentially long term exposure to a downhole environment. Techniques for forming protective compressive layers at the surfaces of such devices may include positioning devices within a chamber for bombardment by high frequency particles. As a manner of enhancing the compressive layer thickness and effectiveness, low temperature conditions may be applied to the device during the high frequency treatment.

The invention is a sealing system, such as a packer, that is used in a wellbore to seal against an exterior surface, such as a casing or open wellbore. The sealing system includes a swellable material that swells from an unexpanded state to an expanded state thereby creating a seal when the swellable material comes into contact with a triggering fluid.

Swellable elastomer-based apparatus, oilfield elements comprising same, and methods of using same in oilfield applications

Novel carbon-plus-nitrogen corrosion-resistant ferrous and austenitic alloys, apparatus incorporating an inventive alloy, and methods of making and using the apparatus are described. The corrosion-resistant ferrous and austenitic alloys comprise no greater than about 4 wt. % nickel, are characterized by a strength greater than about 700 MPa (100 ksi), and, when being essentially free of molybdenum (&#x3c;0.3 wt. %), have minimum Pitting Resistance Equivalence (PRE) numbers of 20 and minimum Measure of Alloying for Corrosion Resistance numbers (MARC) of 30 because of the use of both carbon and nitrogen. The ferrous and austenitic alloys are particularly formulated for use in oilfield operations, especially sour oil and gas wells and reservoirs. An oilfield assembly for exploring for, drilling for, testing for, or producing hydrocarbons includes various oilfield elements such as tubing, jointed pipe, sucker rods, submersible pump motor protector bags, packer elements, blow out preventer elements, zonal isolation tool elements, etc; and one or more of the oilfield elements has a swellable elastomeric composition that includes a swellable elastomer and one or more nanosensors dispersed therein. A method of selecting one or more oilfield elements has a component of an elastomeric composition that includes a swellable elastomer and one or more nanosensors dispersed therein; and a method of using the one or more oilfield elements in an oilfield operation, thus exposing the oilfield element to an oilfield environment.

Oilfield apparatus comprising swellable elastomers having nanosensors therein and methods of using same in oilfield application

A technique includes deploying a spring downhole, energizing the spring and using the energized spring to form an annular barrier in the well. The spring may be energized prior to being run downhole or after being run downhole, depending on the particular embodiment of the invention.
