Disclosed are examples in which the acknowledgement channel is used for retransmitting a frame received with error. A receiver is configured to transmit an acknowledgment for a frame when the frame is decoded following receipt of the last Pilot Control Group (PCG) of the same frame. The transmitter is configured to receive the acknowledgment of an earlier frame during a subsequent frame, and not to retransmit the earlier frame. The two frames may be adjacent. During connection setup negotiation, the system can determine the values of ack_mask1 defining allowed times for the receiver to acknowledge successful decoding of the subsequent frame, and ack_mask2 defining allowed times for the receiver to acknowledge successful decoding of the earlier frame. The two mask values provide non-overlapping allowed times, so the receiver can acknowledge within the subsequent frame (1) successful decoding of the earlier frame, and (2) successful decoding of the subsequent frame.

Delayed automatic repeat request (ARQ) acknowledgment

Techniques for improving the capacity of a wireless communications system using interference cancellation (IC). In an early decoding and IC aspect, a frame transmitted from a user to a base station may be decoded prior to the entire frame being received by the base station. The remaining portion of the frame may then be re-constructed at the base station prior to its reception, and cancelled from the receive signal to reduce the interference to frames received from other users. In a power control aspect for early decoding and IC, the power control target level at a local base station may be adjusted in response to successfully early decoding a frame, without affecting the overall outer loop power control operation. Further aspects include late decoding techniques for utilizing the IC of other users' signals to improve the probability of decoding a given user's frames, as well as techniques for traffic channel demodulation using channel re-estimation.

Interference cancellation for wireless communications

A method and apparatus providing broadcast content over a unicast channel. The method and apparatus may be configured to determine whether content received using a broadcast type format is to be transmitted using a unicast type format, and to map the content to a unicast reservation upon a determination that the content is to be transmitted using the unicast type format.

Methods and apparatus for providing broadcast content over a unicast channel

The disclosure relates to managing applications configured for execution on a mobile device. An embodiment of the disclosure receives one or more network access requests from one or more applications executing on the mobile device, determines that the mobile device is operating in a background mode, suppresses transmission to a network of the one or more network access requests to a network based on the determination, and transmits a subset of the one or more network access requests upon transition out of the background mode.

Optimizing signaling load overhead and battery consumption for background applications

Disclosed are methods and apparatus for interference cancellation in a wireless communication system. In particular, the disclosed methods and apparatus provide for interference cancellation in a wireless device, including extending linear interference cancellation techniques, such as quasi-linear interference cancellation (QLIC), in the wireless device to a first orthogonal set, which may be a first quasi orthogonal function (QOF) set for a cdma2000 system to cancel interference from that set upon another desired QOF set. QLIC may also be extended to cancellation of signals from non-intended base stations as well. Accordingly, the present methods and apparatus afford reduced interference through QLIC by canceling signals due to either undesired QOF sets or non-intended base stations, which in turn results in an increase in forward link capacity.

Methods and apparatus for interference cancellation

A wireless communications power saving method and apparatus is provided. The method includes establishing a circular buffer configured to maintain a number of most recently encountered frame delay times and waiting a frame delay time after receiving a further frame before the station enters a power save state. Frame delay time is a period equal to a largest most recently encountered frame delay period in the circular buffer. The method further determines, at a station, a dormancy time based on a number of data frames received since the station transitioned from an inactive mode to an active mode, a packet transmission rate, and a data frame time interval representing time between data frames received at the station, and causes the station to switch to a further inactive mode if a next packet is not received within the dormancy time after receipt of a previous packet.

Method and apparatus for reducing power consumption in a wireless communication device

A wireless communications power saving method and apparatus is provided. The method includes, when no reverse link traffic exists and no forward link traffic has been received for a predetermined amount of time, establishing, at a terminal, a reverse link transmission pilot signal duty cycle, and boosting overhead channel signal transmission power during ON slots and gating overhead channel and pilot signal transmission power during OFF slots. The design further includes estimating, at the terminal, an available data transmission rate, determining an actual data transmission rate, setting a terminal transmission duty cycle for a next period based on the estimated available data transmission rate, the actual data transmission rate, and a margin of error, and transmitting data from the terminal according to the terminal transmission duty cycle.

Wireless communication device power reduction method and apparatus

An access network determines to transmit multicast messages on a downlink shared channel. The access network receives a multicast registration message and a traffic channel request from at least one access terminal. The access network assigns a traffic channel to the at least one access terminal, and transmits the multicast messages on the downlink shared channel. In another example, the access network can determine a channel type upon which the support a multicast session, can indicate the channel type selection to the at least one access terminal in an announce message and can then transmit the multicast messages for the multicast session on the selected channel type. The at least one access terminal receives the announce message, requests a traffic channel and receives a traffic channel assignment, registers to the multicast session and monitors the downlink shared channel for multicast messages.

Multicasting within a wireless communications system

Methods, apparatus and media for receiving emergency broadcast information in a broadcast-multicast service of a communication system. The methods, apparatus and media include scheduling a broadcast of emergency broadcast information in designated control channel cycles for designated subscriber stations. The control channel cycles are transmitted with the designated control channel cycles including the emergency broadcast information. Subscriber stations awake according to their designated control channel cycle and receive the transmission of their designated control channel cycle on a broadcast-multicast service. The subscriber station determines if emergency broadcast information is in the control channel cycle assigned to the subscriber station and responds accordingly.

Method and apparatus for emergency broadcast using an emergency broadcast-multicast service

Methods and apparatus for obtaining web content are disclosed. The method includes identifying resources identified by domain name references that a user may request, obtaining a status of at least one operating condition that affects operations of the communication device, fetching, in advance of the user requesting the content, network addresses of the resources so as to resolve the domain name references, and adapting a level of the fetching based upon the at least one operating condition. The network addresses of the resources are cached so as to generate cached network addresses, and if the user requests the content, the cached network addresses are utilized to access the resources associated with the content.

Adaptive DNS pre-fetching

Aspects of mobility management within a wireless communications network including a plurality of sectors are disclosed. In an example, the wireless communications network includes a first cluster of sectors with at least one target sector and at least one supporting sector. The multicast communication session is carried within both the target and supporting sectors. In another example, a second cluster can be included within the network for supporting the same multicast communication session that includes its own target and supporting sectors. In this example, the first cluster transmits multicast media on a first interlace-multiplex (IM) pair of a downlink broadcast channel (BCH) and the second cluster transmits multicast media on a second IM pair of the downlink BCH. If sectors of the first and second clusters overlap, the network controls a manner in which the first and second clusters carry the multicast media.

Mobility management within a wireless communications network

In a high data rate communication system capable of variable rate transmission, an open loop rate control can be adjusted with a closed loop rate control to maximize throughput. An access point generates interleaved multi-slot packets that allow an access terminal to transmit indicator messages to the access point in accordance with recently received data carried within slots of the multi-slot packets.

Method and apparatus for fast closed-loop rate adaptation in a high rate packet data transmission

A method and apparatus for overload detection and control is disclosed. A base station may be in communication with one or more subscriber stations. Overload may be detected as a function of a plurality of parameters, each of which places a load on the base station. Both the type and degree of overload may be ascertained. Appropriate remedial measures may be implemented that are suitable to the type and degree of overload detected.
