Methods are provided for promoting cartilage growth and/or repair. The methods include, administering locally to a site in a subject in need thereof, bone marrow stromal cells attached to fibrin microbeads comprising crosslinked hyaluronic acid and thereby producing stable cartilage locally at the site in the subject.

Methods for treating radiation or chemical injury are described that comprise administering to a subject a therapeutically effective amount of adherent stromal cells. Methods of preparing adherent stromal cells and pharmaceutical compositions comprising the cells are also described.

The invention provides microparticles or nanoparticles for treatment of tumors comprising: (i) a targeting agent to the tumor or the tumor environment; and (ii) at least one inducer that stimulates a desired immune response in the tumor environment, leading to tumor apoptosis, wherein components (i) and (ii) are non-covalently or covalently attached to the surface of said microparticles or nanoparticles. The targeting agent is an agent that recognizes and binds to an antigen, a receptor or other molecules found on the surface of tumor cells or in the tumor environment and are preferably antibodies.

Targeting of innate immune response to tumor site

Provided is a pharmaceutical composition for sequestering cells in connective tissue. The composition includes a biocompatible scaffolding to which one or more peptides or proteins are linked. The peptides or proteins have an amino acid sequence that is a subsequence of human ficolin and are capable of binding the cells to be sequestered. The pharmaceutical composition can be used in the treatment of connective tissue, and can be used as a dermal filler.

Peptides and pharmaceutical compositions for treating connective tissue

The present invention relates to novel family of homologous cell attachment chimeric peptides. In particular, the present invention relates to chimeric peptides, each comprising synthetic peptides comprising (a) an M-tide comprising an amino acid sequence that is at least 80% homologous to the amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of: SEQ ID NO:1, 2 and 37; and (b) a core haptide comprising an amino acid sequence homologous to amino acid sequences at the carboxy termini of the and E chains of fibrinogen or other proteins comprising C-termini that are homologous to said fibrinogen sequences, wherein the M-tide and the core haptide originate from the same protein. The synthetic peptides are linked to one another thereby providing the chimeric peptides of the invention which does not occur in the native protein as a continuous sequence. The present invention further discloses pharmaceutical compositions comprising said chimeric peptides and uses thereof.

Stable cell binding chimeric peptides

Novel cell attachment peptides having sequences homologous to specific portions of the carboxy terminal sequence of fibrinogen chains are disclosed. The novel peptides, derived from proteins related to fibrinogen including a peptide adjacent to fibrinogen &#x3b3;-chain C terminus denoted pre-C&#x3b3; possess cell attraction activities, and are useful in pharmaceutical compositions.

Haptotactic peptides

We disclose haptotactic peptides having sequences homologous to specific portions of the carboxy terminal sequence of fibrinogen chains. The peptides derived from fibrinogen pre-C&#x3b3; chain possess activities of cell attraction or cell attachment to a surface to which the peptide is covalently bound.

The present invention provides fibrin microbeads that are biologically active and comprise extensively cross-linked fibrin(ogen), and a method for preparing the fibrin microbeads. The present invention also provides a composition comprising cells bound to the fibrin microbeads, and methods for culturing and separating cells using the fibrin microbeads of the present invention. Finally, the present invention provides methods for transplanting cells and engineering tissue using the fibrin microbeads of the present invention.

Methods of separating cells, transplanting cells and engineering tissue using fibrin microbeads

The present invention provides fibrin nanoparticles having a mean diameter of 200-2000 nm. The present invention provides also methods for preparing fibrin particles of various sizes, including fibrin nanoparticles and fibrin microbeads. The present invention further provides compositions comprising fibrin particles and an agent, wherein the agent is coupled to the amine or carboxy moieties on the surface of the fibrin particles. In addition the present invention provides a composition comprising fibrin nanoparticles and an agent, wherein the agent is admixed with the fibrin nanoparticles. Still further, the present invention provides a method for introducing an agent into a cell, a method for isolating stem and/or progenitor cells from a biological sample, as well as a composition comprising fibrin particles bound to stem and/or progenitor cells.

Fibrin nanoparticles and uses thereof

Fibrin microbeads are prepared containing extensively cross-linked fibrin (ogen) without using glutaraldehyde. The fibrin microbeads are preferably prepared by containing an aqueous solution containing fibrinogen, thrombin and Factor XIII with an oil heated to about 50-80&deg; C. to form an emulsion and mixing the emulsion at 50-80&deg; C. until fibrin microbeads containing extensively cross-linked fibrin (ogen) are obtained. The fibrin microbeads may have a diameter of about 50-200 microns and can contain a bioactive agent. The fibrin microbeads are used for binding cells such as when culturing or separating one cell type from another, or when transplanting cells or engineering tissue.
