A first molten glass of one composition is caused to flow downwardly along converging flow paths of a forming member while simultaneously at least one other molten glass of a different composition is flown downwardly along outer surface portions of the first glass such that said glasses are in molten contact with one another during their downward travel and are then continuously formed into a composite or laminated glass sheet. The molten glasses are distributed to the forming member in such a manner as to provide substantially uniform thickness of the glass layers across the newly formed sheet, and various viscosity, glass flow rates and proportionate layer thicknesses may be obtained by varying the degree of tilt of the forming member.

Forming laminated sheet glass

A relatively thin layer of molten photochromic glass is formed on the surface of a relatively thick molten core glass of greater viscosity than that of the photochromic glass as such core glass is drawn into sheet form. The core glass is selected for its viscosity-temperature characteristics such that the core glass will support the photochromic surface glass during the temperature cycle required for developing the photochromic properties of such surface glass.

Photochromic sheet glass process

Method of reducing the firing shrinkage of the axial hub opening in a disc-type cellular or honeycomb, ceramic heat exchanger by substantially filling the hub opening with a plug which undergoes substantially the same firing shrinkage as the hub opening. The plug then shrinks with the heat exchanger and keeps the hub opening closed, thereby preventing accelerated heating of the cellular ceramic nearest the hub opening and corresponding local increase in the firing shrinkage due to the accelerated heating. A plug with a bulk density closely approximating that of the ceramic matrix is desirable and a plug fashioned from the same cellular ceramic material as the matrix is particularly convenient and effective.
