The present invention is directed to a pollutant abatement system for vehicles propelled by a gasoline combustion engine, in particular a gasoline direct injection engine (GDI). In addition, this invention is concerned with a process of mitigating noxious compounds in the exhaust of such an engine efficiently by applying the inventive abatement system to fulfill future legislative exhaust regulations.

Pollutant abatement system for gasoline vehicles

The present invention describes a three-way-catalyst system comprising a first three-way catalyst on an inert catalyst support which is a double-layer catalyst comprising a first layer on the inert catalyst support, comprising active alumina, a cerium/zirconium mixed oxide and palladium and a second layer applied to the first layer and in direct contact with the exhaust gas to be purified, comprising active alumina and rhodium and being free of cerium and cerium containing materials and a second three-way-catalyst located upstream of the first three-way catalyst.

Three-way-catalyst system

A double-layer three-way catalyst is presented, which is formed from a catalytic coating applied directly to an inert honeycomb and a catalytically active coating thereon, and is suitable especially for cleaning of exhaust gases of motor vehicles with gasoline-operated internal combustion engines. The catalyst contains, in each layer, an active aluminum oxide and a cerium/zirconium mixed oxide, both of which are catalytically activated by palladium. The second layer on the gas side contains not only palladium but also rhodium, which is applied to the active aluminum oxide and the cerium/zirconium mixed oxide of the second layer in addition to the palladium. The cerium/zirconium mixed oxide of the second layer has a higher zirconium oxide content than the cerium/zirconium mixed oxide of the first layer. The catalyst is notable for exceptional activity coupled with outstanding aging stability.

Two-layer-three-way catalyst

The present invention describes a double-layer three-way catalyst on an inert catalyst support comprising a first layer in direct contact with the inert catalyst support, comprising active alumina, a cerium/zirconium mixed oxide and palladium and a second layer applied to the first layer and in direct contact with the exhaust gas to be purified, comprising active alumina and rhodium, characterized in that the second layer is free of cerium and cerium containing materials, the use of such catalyst for cleaning the exhaust gases of a motor vehicle equipped with a gasoline engine and an exhaust gas treatment system comprising such catalyst up stream of a gasoline particulate filter (GPF).

Start-up catalyst for use upstream of a gasoline particulate filter

A one-layer three-way catalyst is described for the cleaning of the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines with outstanding activity and thermal stability. The catalyst comprises an active aluminum oxide, a first cerium/zirconium mixed oxide and a second cerium/zirconium mixed oxide. The first cerium/zirconium mixed oxide has a higher zirconium oxide content than the second mixed oxide. The first cerium/zirconium mixed oxide is catalytically activated with rhodium and the second cerium/zirconium mixed oxide with palladium.

Palladium&#x2014;rhodium single-layer catalyst

Disclosed herein is a layered three-way catalytic system being separated in a front and a rear portion having the capability of simultaneously catalyzing the oxidation of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide and the reduction of nitrogen oxides. Provided is a catalyst composite comprising a single front catalytic layer and two rear catalytic layers in conjunction with a substrate, where the single font layer and the rear bottom layer comprise a Pd component, the rear top layer comprises a Rh component, and the rear bottom layer is substantially free of an oxygen storage component (OSC).

Three-way catalyst having an upstream single-layer catalyst

A double-layer three-way catalyst for purification of the exhaust gases from internal combustion engines which has excellent activity and thermal stability is described. The catalyst contains active aluminum oxide and a first cerium/zirconium mixed oxide which are both catalytically activated with palladium in the first layer applied to a catalyst support. In the second layer which is in direct contact with the exhaust gas, the catalyst likewise contains an active aluminum oxide and a second cerium/zirconium mixed oxide which are both catalytically activated with rhodium. The second cerium/zirconium mixed oxide has a higher zirconium oxide content than the first mixed oxide.

Three way catalyst

Disclosed herein is a catalytically active particulate filter, an exhaust gas cleaning system and a process for cleaning the exhaust gases of predominantly stoichiometrically operated internal combustion engines, which are suitable, as well as the gaseous CO, HC and NOpollutants, also for removing particulates from the exhaust gas. The particulate filter comprises a filter body and a catalytically active coating consisting of two layers. The first layer is in contact with the incoming exhaust gas, the second layer with the outgoing exhaust gas. Both layers contain alumina. The first layer contains palladium. The second layer contains, in addition to rhodium, an oxygen-storing cerium/zirconium mixed oxide.
