A neuromorphic controlled powered orthotic and prosthetic system and device including a custom or universal fit fixed-ankle orthosis, to stabilize or immobilize an injured lower limb or act as an ankle prosthesis, and an actuated or powered articulated false-foot connected to the fixed-ankle orthosis or the prosthesis to form an actuated articulated false-foot orthosis. Associated with or mounted on the actuated articulated false-foot, or in or on the body, are sensors for sensing the intent of the subject to move, and the movement range of the articulating false-foot or AAFO and an environmental perturbation. An actuator is used to drive the articulated false-foot orthosis. The system and device further include a controller having an electronic circuit with a biomimetic design based on knowledge of connectivity of neurons within the spinal cord of a primitive vertebrate. The system and device include an electronic circuit made from analog very large scale integrated components and discrete electronic components capable of autonomously generating cyclic voltage output. An integral power supply serves the portable controller and AAFO.

Neuromorphic controlled powered orthotic and prosthetic system

Systems, devices, and methods for implanting target-specific multiple intrafascicular electrodes in peripheral nerves are provided to facilitate an implantation process that can reduce the difficulty of the implanting procedure and the time taken to implement the procedure. A longitudinal intrafascicular electrode implantation facilitator (LIFT) and a method for utilization of the LIFT for intrafascicular electrode implantation are provided. The LIFT can flatten the nerve to increase access to the number of fascicles available for implantation and supports the nerve during electrode implantation.

Systems and methods for implanting longitudinal intrafascicular electrodes

Systems and methods for delivering targeted neurostimulation therapies to the nervous system of a subject are provided. A set of electrodes can be strategically distributed around a target nerve, and the nerve can be activated though the electrodes using a channel-hopping interleaved pulse scheduling (CHIPS) stimulation strategy. The systems and methods can leverage the spatiotemporal summation of short, sub-threshold current pulses interleaved across two or more independent stimulation channels (hopping from channel to channel) and delivered across electrodes strategically placed in an interfering configuration around the target neural tissue.

Systems and methods for delivering focalized neurostimulation

Systems and methods for providing enhanced surface electrical neurostimulation and haptic feedback to a user within a simulation environment are provided. Enhanced surface electrical neurostimulation (eSENS) platforms are able to elicit distally referred tactile percepts while avoiding large charge densities as a method to deliver intuitive haptic feedback during functional tasks.

Systems and methods for providing haptic feedback when interacting with virtual objects

Systems and methods for providing respiratory pacing using a closed-loop adaptive controller that can self-adjust in real-time to meet metabolic needs of a subject are provided. The controller can use an adaptive pattern generator/pattern shaper architecture that can autonomously generate a desired ventilatory pattern in response to dynamic changes in arterial carbon dioxide levels and, based on a learning algorithm or machine learning, can modulate stimulation intensity and cycle duration to evoke the desired ventilatory pattern.

Systems and methods for controlled pacing of respiratory muscles

Devices, systems, and methods for recording action potential (AP) from a nerve are provided. A device can include a cuff or a microchannel to be used to record an AP from a nerve. A recording electrode can be included within a channel of the cuff or microchannel, and the recording electrode can be offset or off-center such that it is not located mid-channel within the recording cuff or microchannel.

Directional-specific extraneural recording device

Adaptive systems and methods for automatically determining and continuously updating stimulation parameters for adjusting ventilation to accommodate a patient's specific physiology, metabolic needs, and muscle state are disclosed herein. Having a closed loop implementation, the system may comprise a controller including a neuromorphic controlled adaptive feed-forward Pattern Generator/Pattern Shaper (PG/PS) assembly, which controls respiratory muscle movement using electrical stimulation. This PG/PS assembly comprises a biomimetic design where the pattern generator includes a neural network mimicking the simplified connectivity pattern of respiratory related neurons in the brain stem to produce a rhythmic breathing pattern frequency and the pattern shaper includes a neural network mimicking the simplified connectivity pattern of neurons to produce a stimulus control signal. This biomimetic design for the controller automatically customizes and continually updates stimulation parameters to achieve a desired breathing pattern and, thereby, slow the development of muscle fatigue.

System and method for neuromorphic controlled adaptive pacing of respiratory muscles and nerves

A multi-lead multi-electrode system and method of manufacturing the multi-lead multi-electrode system includes a multi-electrode lead that may be used to deploy multiple separable electrodes to different spaced apart contact sites, such as nerve or muscle tissues, for example, that are spatially distributed over a large area.

Devices and methods for implanting neural interface technology in mammals are provided. A device can include an array of self-closing channels; two flanges that flank the array of channels, the flanges can be used to open the self-closing channels; and a plurality of cuff electrodes disposed at a circumference of each self-closing channel, the plurality of cuff electrodes being optimally disposed to detect a maximum amplitude of an action potential signal.

Systems and methods for decoding neural and/or electromyographic signals are provided. A system can include at least one single channel decoder. Optionally, the system can include a demixer in operable communication with the single channel decoders. Each single channel decoder can include a filter to attenuate noise and sharpen spikes in the neural and/or electromyographic signals, a detection function to identify spikes, and a demodulator to get a real-time estimate of motor intent.

Systems and methods for decoding intended motor commands from recorded neural signals for the control of external devices or to interact in virtual environments

Circuits and circuit systems to record activity (e.g., peripheral nerve activity) are provided. The circuits advantageously have good noise characteristics (e.g., low noise), as well as low power consumption and low area. A circuit can be implantable (e.g., in a human subject). Methods of designing, manufacturing, and using such circuits and circuit systems are also provided.

Low noise analog electronic circuit design for recording peripheral nerve activity

Systems and methods to simulate activity that would be recorded using an interface to nerve fibers are provided. Signals, such as motor intent signals, can be converted to neural recordings, such as neural recordings by longitudinal intrafascicular electrodes (LIFEs). Spinal cord motor pools and neural interfaces can be jointly simulated. Realistic simulated neural recordings, such as from electrodes such as LIFEs, can be provided and can be used for the evaluation of decoding algorithms. Systems and methods described herein provide a framework for developing neural interface devices.

Neural interface activity simulator

A modular multi-channel inline connector system that connects an implanted electrode within a body of an organism, such as the human body, with a device located external to or implanted within the body. The modular multi-channel inline system comprises of a first lead operatively connected to the implanted electrode and to a first connector portion. A second lead is operatively connected to a second connector portion and operatively connected to the device. One of the first and second connector portions comprises a male connector and the other of the first and second connector portions comprises a female connector. The first and second connector portions are arranged to connect with each other and to be operatively located embedded within the body.
