Hydrophilic adhesive compositions are disclosed that contain a surfactant that is miscible, but not fully soluble in the polymer matrix of the adhesive. This permits the surfactant to continuously replenish at the surface of the adhesive as other surfactant is removed, such as when it is carried away by an aqueous sample flowing over that surface in an in-vitro diagnostic device, resulting in adhesive compositions that are inherently hydrophilic on their surfaces and do not rely on the bloom mechanism of known hydrophilic adhesives. This provides greater design options for in-vitro diagnostic device manufacturers, including the use of hydrophilic adhesive spacers in lieu of or in combination with hydrophilic top covers.

A novel crosslinkable ambifunctional perfluorinated polyetheris provided wherein the polyether is defined by the formula X &mdash;(C F O) &mdash;X where X and X are different functional terminal groups which are capable of forming a crosslinked perfluorinated polyether by addition, condensation or ring-opening reaction, and n ranges from 1 to 2000 and a is an integer of from 1 to 4. The mole ratio of X and X is 1:1. A release film may be formed from the cross-linked perfluorinated polyether.

Ambifunctional perfluorinated polyethers

A pressure sensitive adhesive tape is provided having a silicone-free release layer, said tape comprising (1) at least one backing layer; (2) at least one pressure sensitive adhesive layer, and (3) at least one silicone-free release layer, said release layer comprising a crosslinked poly(alkylene oxide), said poly(alkylene oxide) being defined by the formula X &mdash;(O&mdash;R) &mdash;OX where X and X are terminal groups at least one of which permits crosslinking of said poly(alkylene oxide), n ranges from 1 to 200,000, R is a straight or branched alkylene group having the formula (CR R ) where m is an integer from 1 to 10 and R and R may independently be hydrogen and C alkyl.
