A method to perform an in-situ analysis of a downhole communication system includes generating a transmission waveform of a transmission signal, and amplifying the transmission waveform by a digital to analog converter and an amplifier that are configured to modify a property of the transmission waveform. After generating the transmission waveform, the method includes transmitting the transmission waveform to a tool of a communication system. The method further includes filtering a response waveform from the tool, the response waveform being a waveform of a signal transmitted by the tool in response to receiving the transmission waveform. The method further includes performing an in-situ analysis of the tool based on the response waveform.

In some embodiments, an apparatus and a system, as well as a method and an article, may operate to retrieve a parsing instructions file and a binary configuration file stored in a housing, parse the binary configuration file according to the parsing instructions file to determine configuration information, display at least some of the configuration information as part of a graphical user interface, receive a selection of some of the configuration information and corresponding changed parameter values of the configuration information, transform the binary configuration file into a transformed version of the binary configuration file, and transmit the transformed version of the binary configuration file to the housing as a replacement for the binary configuration file. Self-defining configuration apparatus, methods, and systems

Time is tracked in a downhole tool to indicate whether timestamps associated with data samples or events in a log indicate either real time or a duration of time since a certain reset, and to indicate whether the timestamps have been synchronized with a master clock in the tool. The log also records the time and offset of each synchronization event. A computer processes the log to convert all of the timestamps to real-time values and to indicate timestamps that have been estimated and timestamps that were never synchronized to a master clock in the tool. The computer determines an associated uncertainty for each of the estimated timestamps.
