A hybrid satellite-mesh network including a ground segment, a mobile segment and a satellite segment provides high bandwidth communication between mobile platforms and the Internet. The satellite segment is used only when mesh network communication links between mobile segment nodes and ground segment nodes are unavailable. Mobile segment nodes can function in either an access terminal mode or an access point mode to communicate with other mobile segment nodes according to a routing algorithm in a mesh portion of the network. Mobile segment nodes employ adaptive frequency reuse, link level date rate adaptation, link level power control and adaptive beam forming antennas.

Hybrid satellite and mesh network system for aircraft and ship internet service

Embodiments are described in connection with transferring data traditionally communicated through a wired link over a high-speed wireless link. The disclosed embodiments provide the wired and/or wireless data communication with minimal changes on the existing wired architecture. According to an embodiment is an apparatus for communicating wirelessly over a traditional wired link. The apparatus includes a transmitter comprising a host and a first portion of a client connected by a wired link and a receiver comprising a second portion of the client. According to some embodiments, the apparatus can include a query module that determines an operation rate based in part on a rate supported by a medium access control and a retransmission statistic and an assigner module that assigns a communication to a wired protocol or a wireless protocol.

Techniques to more efficiently transmit pilot and signaling on the uplink in an OFDM system. With subband multiplexing, M usable subbands in the system are partitioned into Q disjoint groups of subbands. Each subband group may be assigned to a different terminal for uplink pilot transmission. Multiple terminals may transmit simultaneously on their assigned subbands. The transmit power for the pilot may be scaled higher to attain the same total pilot energy even though S instead of M subbands are used for pilot transmission by each terminal. Pilot transmissions from the terminals are received, and a channel estimate is derived for each terminal based on the pilot received on the assigned subbands. The channel estimate comprises a response for additional subbands not included in the assigned group. Subband multiplexing may also be used for uplink signaling transmission.

The system includes a method for transporting a content flow to an access network for distribution to devices coupled to the access network. A system and method of instant messaging is disclosed and includes transmitting an indication from a wireless device to an instant messaging server that instant messaging is enabled at the wireless device. Further, a plurality of communication signals between the wireless device and a plurality of base stations are monitored. After determining that the wireless device has one remaining communication signal with one base station, the one remaining communication signal is monitored. Moreover, a time history of signal strength data for the one remaining communication signal is recorded and a slope of the signal strength data is determined. Based on the slope of the signal strength data, it can be determined whether an imminent loss of signal is about to occur at the wireless device.

The systems and techniques involve wireless communications wherein a module or communications device is configured to select first and second terminal pairs, the first terminal pair having a first transmitting terminal and a first receiving terminal, and the second terminal pair having a second transmitting terminal and a second receiving terminal, schedule a first signal transmission from the first transmitting terminal to an intermediate terminal, the first signal transmission being destined for the first receiving terminal, schedule, simultaneously with the first signal transmission, a second signal transmission from the second transmitting terminal to the second receiving terminal, and schedule a power level for each of the first and second signal transmissions that satisfies a target quality parameter for each of the intermediate terminal and the second receiving terminal.
