A system for deep rolling a fan blade including a shaft assembly disposed along a first axis; a hub connected to a distal end of the shaft assembly, the hub having an upper hub portion and a lower hub portion extending along a second axis, the second axis forming an angle relative to a first axis; a roller disk joined to the lower portion of the hub, the roller disk configured to contact a fan blade; a fixture supporting the fan blade; the fixture comprising a body supporting a pivot clamp attached to the body with a pivot; a support attached to the body, the support is configured to engage an airfoil portion of the fan blade; a receiver formed in the body for supporting a root of the fan blade; and a shoulder attached to the body configured to support a platform portion of the fan blade.

Surface treatment system design for high fatigue life hollow fan blades

A mechanical surface treatment method for a workpiece includes using a multi-axis powered machine to actuate a deep rolling tool having a roller relative to the workpiece. The actuating includes applying the roller against a workpiece surface with a normal force sufficient to plastically deform the workpiece and translating the roller relative to the workpiece surface. The method includes concurrently applying an electrical current to the workpiece surface in a manner that produces an electroplastic effect at the workpiece surface and a near surface region. The electroplastic effect and the plastic deformation produce a refinement in a grain structure at the workpiece surface and near surface region and an increase in dislocation sources and tangles within the grain structure.

Method for mechanical surface treatment using electro-pulse assisted deep rolling

An embodiment of a tool assembly includes a spring-loaded shaft assembly disposed along a first axis, a hub, and a roller disk. The hub is connected to a distal end of the spring-loaded shaft assembly. The hub has an upper hub portion adjacent to the distal end of the spring-loaded shaft assembly aligned with the first axis, and a lower hub portion extending along a second axis. The second axis forms an angle relative to the first axis. The roller disk is joined to the lower portion of the hub, and has a working surface about its perimeter. The roller disk is rotatable about the second axis parallel to the second portion of the hub. The working surface includes a profile along its width such that an effective radius of the roller disk varies along a width thereof.

Deep rolling tool and method

An airfoil including an airfoil body, a recessed portion of a first depth in a first side of the airfoil body, the recessed portion including a plurality of pockets of a second depth located within the recessed portion and ribs of the first depth located between the pockets, a cover configured to fit into the recessed portion such that an interior surface of the cover engages the ribs and an exterior surface of the cover is about flush with an exterior surface of the first side of the airfoil body, and a high energy beam weld configuration extending through the cover and into the ribs and positioned to attach the cover to the ribs.

An airfoil includes an airfoil body that extends at least between leading and trailing edges, first and second sides, and radially inner and outer ends. The airfoil body includes an aluminum alloy that has a controlled crystallographic texture with respect to a predefined three-dimensional coordinate system. The airfoil can be used in the fan of a gas turbine engine.
