A method for manufacture of a nanophotonic device can include the step of operatively coupling a planar light source and a photodetector with an optical waveguide. The planar light source, photodetector and optical waveguide can then be monolithically integrated in direct contact with a sapphire substrate, along with an electronic component that is also in direct contact with the sapphire substrate.

Nanophotonic transceiver

A nanophotonic device. The device includes a substrate, at least one light emitting structure and at least one electronic component. The at least one light emitting structure is capable of transmitting light and is monolithically integrated on the substrate. The at least one electronic component is monolithically integrated on the substrate. A method for fabricating nanophotonic devices is also described.

A method of fabricating an optical modulator on a silicon substrate, comprising: forming a silicon nitride layer on the silicon substrate; forming a first polycrystalline silicon layer (PSL) on the silicon nitride layer; patterning the first PSL; forming a first silicon dioxide layer (SDL) on the first patterned PSL; patterning the first SDL; forming a second PSL on the first patterned SDL; patterning the second PSL; forming a second SDL on the second patterned PSL; patterning the second SDL; forming a third PSL on the second patterned SDL; patterning the third PSL; forming a metal layer on the third patterned PSL; patterning the metal layer; removing the first and second SDLs to effect release of first and second side reflectors; forming an active layer on the metal layer; and patterning the active layer or stack to form a base reflector and associated conductive traces for biasing.

Method of fabricating an optical modulator

A sensing system comprises a corner-cube reflector that has three reflective surfaces wherein at least one of the reflective surfaces is a surface of a bimaterial cantilever. The reflective surface of the bimaterial cantilever undergoes a change between a substantially planar shape and a curved shape upon direct exposure to an agent of interest. Such a change is perceived by a suitable detector.

A portable micro-display projector uses a light transmissive liquid crystal display system wherein light is projected co-linearly from a light source through, and is selectively altered by, a transmissive liquid crystal display or liquid crystal light valve of the light transmissive liquid crystal display system.

Portable projector using a transmissive microdisplay

A Electronic/Photonic Bandgap Device (NC#98614). The apparatus includes a substrate; an electronics layer operatively coupled to the substrate; and an optical bus layer operatively coupled to the electronics layer. The optical bus layer comprises at least one 3D photonic bandgap structure having at least one period operatively coupled to the electronics layer and comprising a plurality of honeycomb-like structures having a plurality of high index regions and a plurality of low index regions, wherein the plurality of honeycomb-like structures comprises at least four honeycomb-like structures layered over each other, wherein a second honeycomb-like structure is offset from a first honeycomb-like structure, wherein a third honeycomb-like structure is offset from a second honeycomb-like structure, and wherein a fourth honeycomb-like structure is not offset from the first honeycomb-like structure. The 3D photonic bandgap structure and the electronics layer are monolithically integrated over the substrate.

Electronic/photonic bandgap device

An optical modulator used for optically modulating electromagnetic energy. The optical modulator comprises a substrate and three substantially planar reflectors arranged substantially mutually orthogonal to each other. The planar reflectors comprise a base reflector disposed substantially in the plane of the substrate and first and second side reflectors operably coupled to the base reflector. The optical modulator further comprises a pair of electrically conductive traces operably connected to the base reflector, an electrically conductive pad operably connected to each of the conductive traces, at least one material layer deposited on the base reflector by which its reflection properties may be altered or modulated with an applied voltage, and a biasing source operably coupled to said conductive pads for providing a modulated voltage to the base reflector.

Optical modulator

A liquid crystal display includes: a) a sapphire substrate; b) a single crystal silicon structure disposed on the sapphire substrate to create a silicon-on-sapphire structure; c) a plurality of liquid crystal capacitors disposed on the silicon-on-sapphire structure; d) integrated self-aligned circuitry formed from the crystal silicon structure, where the circuitry modulates the liquid crystal capacitors such that a video image is generated; and e) an integrated audio transducer disposed on the silicon-on-sapphire structure for generating an audible signal.

Silicon-on-sapphire display with audio transducer and method of fabricating same

A reconfigurable liquid crystal display comprises a polarizer operably coupled to a beam of incident light to pass a beam of polarized light having a polarization axis. A sequence of liquid crystal display pixels serially aligned with the beam of polarized light controls the angle of the polarization axis. An analyzer passes a gray-scale portion of the beam of polarized light from the sequence of liquid crystal display pixels corresponding to the angle of the polarization axis. Each pixel in the sequence may be independently programmed, i.e. reconfigured, to vary the angle of the polarization axis for calibrating the display to a standard gray-scale and for correcting faulty pixels with VLSI on-chip driver and interface circuits.

Reconfigurable liquid crystal display

A method and apparatus for micro-Golay cell infrared detector. The detector includes a microchannel plate array, sealing membrane, flexible membrane, IR absorbent medium and thermally reactive medium. The microchannel plate array has an upper surface and a lower surface and includes chamber walls and chambers. The sealing membrane is operatively coupled to the microchannel plate array and is capable of sealing the lower surface. The flexible membrane is operatively coupled to the upper surface and is capable of deforming. The IR absorbent medium is operatively coupled to the chambers and is capable of converting IR radiation into heat. The thermally reactive medium is contained within the chambers and is capable of changing volume in response to temperature changes.

Method and apparatus for micro-Golay cell infrared detectors

A programmable gray-scale liquid crystal display comprises a polarizer operably coupled to a beam of incident light to pass a beam of polarized light having a polarization axis. Programmable gray-scale liquid crystal display

A liquid crystal display includes: a) a sapphire substrate having a first crystal lattice structure; b) a single crystal silicon structure having a thickness no greater than about 100 nanometers affixed to the sapphire substrate to create a silicon-on-sapphire structure, and a second crystal lattice structure oriented by the first crystal lattice structure; c) an array of liquid crystal capacitors formed on the silicon-on-sapphire structure; and d) integrated self-aligned circuitry formed from the silicon layer which is operably coupled to modulate the liquid crystal capacitors. The liquid crystals capacitors may include nematic or ferroelectric liquid crystal material.

Silicon-on-sapphire display apparatus and method of fabricating same

A liquid crystal display includes: a) a sapphire substrate; b) a single crystal silicon structure disposed on the sapphire substrate to create a silicon-on-sapphire structure; c) a plurality of liquid crystal capacitors disposed on the silicon-on-sapphire structure; d) integrated self-aligned circuitry formed from the crystal silicon structure, where the circuitry modulates the liquid crystal capacitors in response to an input control signal; and e) a receiver disposed on the silicon-on-sapphire structure for receiving electromagnetic radiation and generating the input control signal responsive to the received electromagnetic radiation.

Silicon-on-sapphire display with wireless interconnections and method of fabricating same

A micro-power generator, comprises an electrically insulating substrate; a semiconductor layer affixed to the substrate; electrodes affixed to the semiconductor layer for collecting electrical charges emitted by a radioisotope source; a radio-isotope source interposed between the electrodes; and electrical circuitry operably coupled to the electrodes for transforming the electrical charges into a controlled output.
