A cover crop termination system includes a smooth drum and a crimping arm assembly operatively connected to the drum through a cam mechanism including a cam follower. The crimping arm assembly includes a plurality of crimping assemblies having crimping bars which crimp the cover crop after it has been rolled in order to prevent resprouting of the crop.

Cover crops may be rolled and crimped using an apparatus which may be rolled across a field at a relatively high speed without excessive vibration. The apparatus includes a substantially cylindrical drum which has a plurality of rows of outwardly extending blades projecting therefrom. The blades may be wave-shaped, curved, substantially straight and discontinuous, blades paired with a plurality of spaced apart outwardly extending rings, or combinations thereof. In use as the apparatus is rolled across a field having a crop thereon, the blades contact and crimp the stalks of the crop, effectively killing the plant.

An apparatus and method are provided for continuously measuring the soil strength on-the-fly and at different depths. The apparatus includes a downwardly extending probe having an impedance sensor mounted on a leading edge thereof so as to be impacted by the soil as the probe is moved in a horizontal direction therethrough. A reciprocating drive is also provided which is effective for simultaneously oscillating the probe in an up and down movement while it is passing horizontally through the soil. The mechanical impedance exerted upon the sensor is then measured as the probe is passed both horizontally and up and down through said soil, thereby providing a continuous depth-variable profile of the soil strength over a large area.
