A process device is configured to meet a desired Safety Integrity Level (SIL). A device interface is configured to couple to the process device and provide an output related to operation of a component of the process device. A component monitor monitors operation of the component and identifies a safety event of the component. A safety response module responds to a safety event of the component in accordance with a safety response.

Process device with supervisory overlayer

A process device for coupling to a two-wire process control loop&#x2014;includes diagnostic circuitry configured to identify a failure or reduced level of performance or provide a prediction of a future failure or reduced level of performance. An output coupled to the two-wire process control loop is configured to provide an analog output on the loop related to an output from the diagnostic circuitry.

Process device with diagnostic annunciation

A field mountable dedicated process diagnostic device is used for diagnosing operation of an industrial control or monitoring system. An input is configured to receive at least one process signal related to operation of the industrial process. A memory contains diagnostic program instructions configured to implement a diagnostic algorithm using the process signal. The diagnostic algorithm is specific to the industrial process. A microprocessor performs the diagnostic program instructions and responsively diagnoses operation of the process based upon the process signal.

A Safety Instrumented System for use with a process control system receives pressure of process fluid in the process piping. A valve positioner positions a valve which controls flow of process fluid through the process piping. The valve positioner is caused to perform a partial stroke of the valve or otherwise introduce a perturbation into the process. A resulting change in sensed pressure due to the perturbation is used to diagnose operation of the process.

Process equipment validation

A diagnostic device for coupling to a process control loop includes digital communication circuitry configured to receive a digital communication signal from the process control loop. The digital communication signal is a digitally modulated analog signal on the process control loop which is modulated to a plurality of discrete analog signal levels representative of digital values. Diagnostic circuitry diagnoses operation of the process control loop which may include field devices of the process control loop based upon the digitally modulated analog signal.

Two-wire process control loop diagnostics

A process device is configured for coupling to a two wire process control loop. Loop current output circuitry is configured to apply an output current to the two wire process control loop. Loop current verification circuitry is coupled to the two wire process control loop and configured to detect errors in the applied output current. At least a portion of the loop current verification circuitry is independent from the loop current output circuitry.

A process device for use in a process control system includes output circuitry configured to couple to a process control loop. The output circuitry controls electrical current through the loop. Loop override circuitry is configured to override operation of the output circuitry and set the electrical current in the loop to a desired level.

A process device for use on an industrial process control system includes a quiescent current sensor configured to sense quiescent current draw of the process device. Diagnostic circuitry determines a diagnostic condition of the process device as a function of the sensed quiescent current.

A process transmitter communications circuit has link terminals which are coupled to a process link, which supplies power to the circuit. A power source is coupled to one of the link terminals and is independent from the power supplied from the process link. Communications circuitry is coupled to the power source and link terminals, which transmits a transmitter signal over the process link, through the link terminals. A power sensing component is coupled to at least one of the link terminals and the communications circuitry and senses whether the power supplied by the process link is inadequate to transmit the transmitter signal. A power control component is coupled to the power source, the link terminals and the communications circuitry and selectively applies power from the power source to the communications circuitry for transmitting the transmitter signal when the power sensing component senses there is inadequate power supplied by the process link.

Process transmitter communication circuit

A level sensor for use in a process application measures height of a product in a tank. The level meter includes a microwave feedhorn directed into the tank, an electronics housing spaced apart from the feedhorn and a microwave waveguide extending therebetween. A microwave transducer in the housing couples to the waveguide and sends and receives microwave signals. A microprocessor in the housing identifies echoes from the microwave signals which are generated and sensed by the microwave transducer. The microprocessor determines height of the product based upon a microwave echo from the product and a microwave echo from the feedhorn. The microprocessor compensates for the effect of propagation delay through the waveguide on height measurements with the feedhorn echo and provides an output related to height of the product in the tank.

Microwave level gauge with remote transducer

A barrier device threadably mounts to a cabling aperture on a field mounted transmitter. The field mounted transmitter receives and transmits signals, and is wholly powered by a current loop circuit. The barrier device has a conductive housing with at least a first and a second aperture and a pair of conductors passing through the first aperture of the barrier device, for connecting to a terminal block in the transmitter. A pair of signal terminals, preferably as ring tongue lug, is mounted in the second aperture of the barrier device. The signal terminals are connectable to a handheld communicator, which is used to calibrate, monitor and test the transmitter. A barrier circuit is mounted in the housing and is electrically connected between the signal terminals and the conductors. Signals from the communicator access the terminal block through the barrier circuit, and the barrier circuit limits the power available at the signal terminals. One embodiment of the barrier device has a third aperture directly across from the first aperture. The first aperture threadably connects to the transmitter, so that cabling from the transmitter can pass through a passageway formed between the first and third apertures. Another embodiment has a stub shaped housing, with one end of stub being the first aperture, and the other end being the second aperture. The first aperture threads to the cabling aperture on the transmitter, and the barrier circuit is potted in the stub shaped housing.

An apparatus receives a query from a process controller containing a process variable address representing a storage location for a process variable in a network of field devices. A communication standard type and an unique field device address is associated with each field device. An associating section identifies a field device address and a communication standard type associated with each of a plurality of process variable addresses. An extracting section matches the stored process variable address with a process variable address in the associating section and extracts the associated field device address and the associated communication standard type from the associating section. A generating section generates a field device request containing the extracted associated field device address as a function of the extracted associated communication standard type. The field device request is conveyable over a communication line to address the storage location represented by the stored process variable address.

A protection circuit is provided for protecting sensitive electrical field instruments from a transient voltage strike and for ensuring that the instruments will meet safety approval during high potential voltage testing. The first and second wires of a two-wire circuit are connected to a first and second terminal respectively. A first surge arrestor electrically couples a first path between the first and second terminal. An impedance and a transient suppressor are connected in series and electrically couple a second path between the first and second terminal. The second path is coupled in parallel with the first path between the first and second terminal and is coupled closer to the internal components of the electrical instruments to be protected than is the first path. A second surge arrestor is electrically coupled between the second terminal and ground, and has a higher voltage breakdown potential than the first surge arrestor.

Lightning protection for field mounted instruments

A threshold detection circuit for improving the output of a two-wire transmitter is disclosed. The transmitter comprises a sensing means which has a sensor responsive to a parameter to be sensed by the transmitter and an excitation means which provides an excitation output to excite the sensor. A threshold detection circuit is coupled to the sensor output and provides a detector output representative of an undesired change in excitation output which can produce a sensor output not substantially representative of the sensed parameter. An output means is coupled to the sensor output and detector output and provides the transmitter output as a function of the sensor output and detector output. A distinctive transmitter output representative of an undesired change in excitation output thus detected is provided, thereby improving the transmitter output.
