Process for the production of 2,4,6-trimethyl pyridine wherein acetone or an acetone derivative is reacted under pressure with ammonia in the presence of a metallic catalyst to form mixture of products with a high preparation of 2,4,6-trimethyl pyridine and recovering the trimethyl pyridine.

Single pass process for making trimethyl pyridine

Process for the production of 2,4,6-trimethyl pyridine wherein a carbonyl compound such as acetone is reacted with ammonia in the presence of a condensation catalyst at a temperature in the range from 100.degree. to 200.degree. C. to produce a mixture of products containing 2,2,4,6-tetramethyl-1,2-dihydropyridine which is then purified. The substantially pure dihydropyridine is then contacted with a cracking catalyst at a temperature in the range from 250.degree. to 450.degree. C. to produce 2,4,6-trimethyl pyridine in high yield.

Two-stage process for making trimethyl pyridine

Thermosettable prepolymers are prepared by reacting (A) a heterocyclic material containing one or more rings and one nitrogen atom or a mixture of such materials wherein at least one of such materials contains at least two reactive substituent groups having at least one reactive hydrogen atom attached to a carbon atom which is attached to the ring such as 2,4,6-trimethyl pyridine; with (B) a cycloaliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid mono- or dianhydride such as phthalic anhydride. These prepolymers or resins, can be homopolymerized without coreactants or copolymerized with N,N'-bis-imides such as 1,1'-(methylenedi-4,1-phenylene)bismaleimide, to produce products, mat castings or composites having good mechanical and thermal properties.

Thermostable hydroxystyrylaza compounds are prepared by reacting methylated pyridines and/or pyrazines with one or more monohydroxy aromatic aldehydes having the ortho and para positions to the hydroxy group block with groups inert to condensation reactions. These compounds are useful to make unsaturated derivatives which can cure into high temperature resistant polymers and/or laminates without giving off condensation products.

Thermostable hydroxystyrylaza compounds

Heat resistant thermosetting prepolymers are prepared by reacting one or more methylated pyridines or pyrazines with one or more hydroxy aromatic aldehydes. The total number of methyl groups on the pyridine or pyrazine can vary from 2 to 4. The prepolymers are cured to produce heat resistant polymers and laminates with conventional fibers such as carbon fibers.

Hydroxystyrylazapolymers

Heat resistant thermosetting prepolymers are prepared by reacting one or more methylated pyridines or pyrazines with one or more aromatic dialdehydes, and isopropenyl phenols. The prepolymers can be further reacted with bismaleimides to make prepolymers with lower cure temperatures and faster cure rates. The total number of methyl groups on the pyridine or pyrazine can vary from 2 to 4. The prepolymers are cured to produce heat resistant polymers and laminates with conventional fibers such as carbon fibers.
