An optical transport system (OTS) having a plurality of optical transponders (OTs) connected via one or more optical links and adapted to communicate with one another using respective rate-adaptive forward-error-correction (FEC) codes. In one embodiment, the OTS has a rate control unit (RCU) adapted to configure the OTs to dynamically adjust the rates of the FEC codes based on an estimated performance margin for each link between two respective communicating OTs to optimize the overall capacity of the OTS while maintaining an adequate, but not excessive, overall system margin.

Rate-adaptive forward error correction for optical transport systems

Methods and apparatus are described for generating and receiving amplitude and differential-phase encoded signals in which the number of phase states at a given amplitude level is always less than or equal to that at a higher amplitude level and at least two amplitude levels have different numbers of phase states.

Method and apparatus for the generation and detection of optical differential varied-multilevel phase-shift keying with pulse amplitude modulation (ODVMPSK/PAM) signals

A laser projector having a configurable spatial light modulator (SLM) adapted to display various spatial modulation patterns and redirect illumination from a laser to form an image on the viewing screen. The laser projector drives the SLM to change spatial modulation patterns at a rate that causes the corresponding sequence of projected images to fuse to mitigate appearance of speckle in the resulting fused image. The SLM can be designed to redirect the illumination using either diffraction or specular reflection of light from the displayed spatial modulation pattern. In one embodiment, the SLM is a MEMS device having an array of individually addressable mirrors supported over a substrate and adapted to move (e.g., translate and/or rotate) with respect to the substrate.

Speckle reduction in laser-projector images

An apparatus includes a reconfigurable spatial light modulator, a light source, and a transmission filter. The reconfigurable spatial light modulator is capable of producing spatially varying amplitude and/or phase modulations of an incident light wavefront. The light source is configured to direct an illumination light beam towards the reconfigurable spatial light modulator such that the modulator produces a modulated outgoing light beam there from. The transmission filter is configured to spatially filter a light pattern formed by the outgoing light beam and to selectively transmit light from substantially only one diffractive order of the light pattern.

Direct optical image projectors

Method and apparatus for routing messages in a network includes first filters to provide frequency-based message signals converted from an optically-based signal and mixers adapted to mix the frequency-based message signals with sub-carriers to generate frequency-based sub-carrier modulated message signals. A frequency generator connected to the mixers provides the sub-carriers to the mixers and a combiner connected to the mixers combines the frequency-based sub-carrier modulated message signals. Second filters connected to the combiner receive and group the frequency-based sub-carrier modulated message signals. Optical transmitters connected to second filters optically convert and transmit the frequency-based sub-carrier modulated message signals. The frequency generator generates and applies a particular sub-carrier frequency to one of the mixers according to information contained in the frequency-based message signal. The information is encoded into the frequency-based message signal via a generalized MPLS (GMPLS) label contained in a header portion of the frequency-based message signal.

Method and apparatus for routing messages in hybridized optical/wireless networks

An optical WDM-TDM network includes a plurality of devices, each of the devices including at least one optical add/drop device adapted to drop optical signals of at least one channel of a plurality of received channels and pass through the remaining channels, at least one receiver, for receiving the at least one dropped channel from the at least one optical add/drop device, an aggregation device for assembling optical signals from the at least one receiver into original data formats, at least one transmitter for transmitting wavelength division multiplexed optical signals on the plurality of channels, a de-aggregation device for disassembling input data into blocks of data to be transmitted as optical signals by the at least one transmitter, and a controller for processing a global timing schedule. The plurality of devices communicate according to the global timing schedule by transmitting and receiving optical signals within bandwidth regions allocated by the global timing schedule for communication within a specific channel of the plurality of channels.

Optical WDM-TDM network

A system and method for transmitting optically labeled packets using DPSK/ASK modulation. The system comprises a transmitter including at least two modulators adapted to provide DPSK modulation of a payload portion of optically labeled packets and ASK modulation for a label portion of the optically labeled packets. A receiver is also provided which includes a balanced detector for detection of the payload portion of the optically labeled packets.

System and method for optically labeled packet transmission

A multi-channel (e.g. WDM) receiver, in which l PMD compensators are time-shared by n (n&#x3e;1) communication channels, where 1&#x2266;l&#x2266;n&#x2212;1. The receiver implements PMD monitoring to identify channels exhibiting relatively high amounts of PMD. Some or all of the identified channels are then subjected, before decoding, to PMD-reduction processing, while the remaining channels are decoded without such processing. Channel allocation for the processing may be changed dynamically depending on the current amounts of PMD exhibited by various channels. Due to efficient utilization of PMD compensators, multi-channel receivers of the invention are capable of performance comparable to that of the corresponding fully compensated (i.e., having a dedicated PMD compensator for each channel) receivers, but at appreciably lower cost.

PMD-reduction processing for a multi-channel receiver

In a system and method of optical communication, optical signals are generated in multiple wavelength channels. Each optical signal is passively transported from an origination node of a network to a destination node. The destination node is determined by the signal wavelength. For at least some signals, the passive transport includes transport through a branch point of the network, such that the signal wavelength determines the output branch through which the signal is routed. In certain embodiments, signals are generated according to a schedule devised to substantially prevent the concurrent arrival, at the same destination node, of signals having the same wavelength but coming from different origination nodes.

System and method for WDM communication with interleaving of optical signals for efficient wavelength utilization

An optical device for discretionary treatment of channels of an optical beam, the optical device comprising: (a) a port for at least transmitting or receiving a first beam having a plurality of channels; (b) a wavelength discriminating device optically coupled to the port, the wavelength discriminating device adapted for at least one of receiving the first beam and diffracting the beam into a plurality of channel beams or receiving a plurality of channel beams and combining the channel beams into the first beam; and (c) an array of reflective elements, the reflective elements exceeding the number of channels, at least a portion of the reflective elements being optically coupled to the wavelength discriminating device to reflect the channel beams, at least two reflective elements of the portion corresponding to a particular channel beam, the at least two reflective elements being controllable to effect a desired output of the particular channel beam.

Optical device with configurable channel allocation

An optical device for routing a plurality of optical signals between a first port and a second port is disclosed. The optical device includes a mirror array having a plurality of reflective elements. Each optical input signal is directed by a reflective element in a direction designated by a control signal. The optical device further includes a curved mirror for receiving each directed optical signal from the respective reflective element, and for reflecting each directed optical signal to the first or second port.

Optical cross connect employing a curved optical component

A device and method for detecting rotational drift of mirror elements in a MEMS tilt mirror array used in an optical crossconnect. The optical crossconnect directs optical signals from an input fiber to an output fiber along an optical path by rotatably positioning mirror elements in desired positions. A monitoring device disposed outside of the optical path is used to obtain images of the MEMS array or to transmit and receive a test signal through the crossconnect for detecting the presence of mirror element drift.

Method and device for optically crossconnecting optical signals using tilting mirror MEMS with drift monitoring feature

A control circuit designed to control driving voltages applied to the actuating electrodes of a MEMS mirror. The control circuit is interfaced with a mirror position sensor and includes a variable gain amplifier whose output depends on a desired mirror equilibrium angle and a current mirror tilt angle determined by the sensor. The desired equilibrium angle can be changed by varying a reference signal applied to the amplifier. The control circuit can stabilize the mirror at relatively large tilt angles and, as a result, extend the available angular range beyond the snap-down angle. Since the number of MEMS mirrors that can be arrayed in an optical cross-connect is a function of the available angular range, the number of channels in a cross-connect may be substantially increased.

Orientation stabilization for MEMS devices

In an all optical switch an imaging system is interposed between the micro lens array and the moveable micro mirrors of a MEMS device to which, or from which, the light beams are directed. This causes an image of the micro lens array to be formed at the MEMS device, or vice-versa, thus effectively eliminating the distance between the micro lens array and the MEMS device. The imaging system may be a telecentric system. The size of the arrangement may be reduced by compacting the optical path, e.g., using appropriate conventional mirrors, and/or employing folded arrangements, i.e., arrangements in which there is only one MEMS device stage that does double duty for both input and output through the use of at least one conventional mirror. The overall system is arranged to account for any inversions introduced.

Optical MEMS switch with imaging system

An optical crossconnect constructed of micro -electromechanical systems (MEMS) tilt mirror arrays for selectively routing optical signals to optic fibers. The crossconnect includes a lens array for directing optical signals from a fiber array to the MEMS mirror array. Individual mirror elements in the mirror array reflect the optic signals to additional optic elements such as a planar mirror, a transmissive/reflective optical element or a second MEMS mirror array for routing the optical signals to output optic fibers.
