Through-tubing, cased-hole sealed material density can be evaluated using gamma ray measurements. Density evaluation comprises detecting, by at least one detector positioned within a casing of a wellbore including a sealing material positioned between the casing and a subsurface formation, electromagnetic radiation generated in response to nuclear radiation being emitted outward toward the subsurface formation, determining an electromagnetic radiation count based on the detected electromagnetic radiation, selecting at least one of a first reference material having a density that is less than a density of the sealing material and a second reference material having a density that is greater than the density of the sealing material, adjusting the electromagnetic radiation count based on the density of the at least one of the first reference material and the second reference material, and determining a density of the sealing material based on the adjusted electromagnetic radiation count.

Through-tubing, cased-hole sealed material density evaluation using gamma ray measurements

A method for evaluating a sealing material positioned between a casing of a wellbore and a subsurface formation in which the wellbore is formed includes emitting an acoustic waveform outward from a position within the casing and detecting a return waveform that is generated in response to the acoustic waveform interacting with a region of interest that includes at least a portion of the sealing material. The method includes determining a first time window of the return waveform associated with the region of interest and trimming the return waveform based on the first time window. The method further includes determining a first spectral power density for the first time window of the trimmed return waveform and determining a composition ratio for the region of interest based on the first spectral power density.

Sonic through tubing cement evaluation

A tool brake is provided for use in horizontal wells that is positionable between a setting tool and a setting sleeve in combination with a tool string. Upon activation of the setting tool to set a bridge plug in a well, the normal action of the setting tool causes activation of the tool brake that extends one or more arms from the tool brake to exert pressure against the wellbore casing of the well. The tool brake prevents reverse slippage caused by gravity's pull of the tool string in a horizontal well permitting accurate placement of downhole tools such as perforating guns. Moreover, inadvertent cutting of a cable that retrieves the downhole tools can be prevented such as due to slippage of downhole tools over-lapping the cable before perforating guns are detonated.

Tool brake

Systems and methods can be used in connection with a wellbore environment for automatically controlling wire being spooled around a drum. A system comprising a spooler, a sensor assembly, and a communication link can be used to adjust the position of wire being spooled around a drum. A first motor can control the spooler and a second motor can control the sensor assembly. The spooler can be positioned to control spooling of wire around the drum as the drum rotates to reel in wire. The sensor assembly can be configured to detect a distance between the sensor assembly and the wire being spooled. A communication link can communicatively couple the sensor assembly with the first motor and the second motor to control movement of the spooler and the sensor assembly relative to the drum based on the distance detected by the sensor assembly.

Automatic wire spooling control

This disclosure relates generally to downhole tools and, more particularly, embodiments related to incorporation of a pumpdown relief valve into a downhole tool that is responsive to changes in differential fluid pressure along a downhole tool. Disclosed is a system for pumpdown regulation in a wellbore. The system may include a downhole tool having a tool body with a tool head that is attachable to a line, the line being attached to a point at a surface of the wellbore. The system may further include a pumpdown relief valve coupled to the tool body that is operable to allow fluid to bypass the downhole tool in direct response to a differential fluid pressure across a length of the downhole tool.

Pumpdown regulator

A system to monitor the retrieval of a well tool from a wellbore comprises a deployment member coupled to the well tool to retrievably insert the well tool in the wellbore. At least one first identification transducer is coupled to a top end of the well tool to transmit an identification signal during retrieval of the well tool. At least one second identification transducer is located at at least one axial location along a surface pressure control assembly to detect the identification signal. A controller is in data communication with the at least one second identification transducer to determine the position of the well tool relative to the pressure control assembly, and to output at least one command related to the position of the well tool relative to the pressure control assembly.

Apparatus and methods for monitoring the retrieval of a well tool

Systems and methods for calibrating resistivity tools in environments with radio-frequency (RF) noise are described herein. The method may include receiving a first measurement from a resistivity tool. The measurement may be taken with the resistivity tool elevated to reduce ground effects on the measurements. The first measurement may be altered by excluding at least some RF noise from the first measurement. The RF noise may be a by product of the resistivity tool being elevated. Additionally, the resistivity tool may be calibrated using the altered first measurement.

Calibration resistivity tools in environments with radio-frequency noise

A system for pump down operations in a wellbore includes a tool string disposed in a wellbore, the tool string including a cable head having an upper end coupled to an electric wireline cable, a downhole tool coupled to the cable head, the downhole tool selected from the group consisting of perforating tools and downhole logging tools. In this embodiment, the system further includes a downhole tension sensor located proximal to the upper end of the cable head, the sensor adapted to obtain downhole wireline tension data and transmit the downhole wireline tension data via the electric wireline cable, a fluid pump with a fluid output operatively connected to the wellbore above the tool string, and a controller adapted to selectively adjust a pump fluid output rate of the fluid pump during pump down operations based on the downhole wireline tension data received from the downhole tension sensor.

System and method for wireline tool pump-down operations

A system is disclosed that includes a tool string including one or more perforating guns, a conveyance operably coupled to the tool string at a socket coupling location and configured to help convey the tool string downhole, a load-measuring device arranged on the tool string and including one or more tension sensors configured to measure tensile load on the conveyance, the load-measuring device further including communication equipment capable of transmitting one or more uphole signals, wherein the one or more uphole signals includes measurement signals corresponding to the tensile load, and a computer system locatable at or near the surface location and communicably coupled to the tool string, the computer system being configured to receive and process the one or more uphole signals and further configured to transmit one or more downhole signals to the tool string to operate the one or more perforating guns.

Device for measuring and transmitting downhole tension

A braking apparatus for a tool string positionable in a wellbore and a method of braking a tool string in a wellbore is disclosed. The braking apparatus includes: a tubular housing having at least one radial arm-bay opening; an actuating mechanism including: a wedge member mounted in an internal cavity of the housing; an axial guide rod coupled at one end to the wedge member; and a push-pull device. The push pull device includes: a biasing member casing through which the guide rod extends to contact the wedge member, a biasing member; and at least one braking arm pivotably mounted to a lower portion of the biasing member casing, wherein when the biasing member casing of the push-pull device in in a lowered position, the braking arm bears on a sloped surface of the wedge member to project the braking arm into contact with a wellbore wall.

Downhole tool string braking

Disclosed is a downhole tool that includes a housing coupled to a wellbore isolation device, a tension-actuated valve arranged within the housing and having a first piston movably arranged within a first piston chamber, the first piston being coupled to a conveyance such that tension in the conveyance is transmitted to the first piston, wherein, when the tension in the conveyance is reduced, the first piston is moved within the first piston chamber such that wellbore fluids are able to enter the first piston chamber, and a pressure-actuated valve arranged within the housing and having a second piston movably arranged within a second piston chamber to place the second piston chamber in fluid communication with the first piston chamber, wherein a pressure drop across the downhole tool allows the second piston to move such that the wellbore fluids pass into the second piston chamber and through the wellbore isolation device.

Wellbore isolation devices and methods of use to prevent pump offs

A system for pump down operations includes a diversion valve unit that is adjustable between a pumping position and a diversion position and a controller coupled to the diversion valve unit. The system further includes a fluid reservoir, a downhole fluid path between the fluid reservoir and a tool downhole, a driving unit in the downhole fluid path for advancing the tool, and a diversion fluid path between a portion of the downhole fluid path downstream of the driving unit and the fluid reservoir or another fluid receptacle. The diversion valve is in the diversion fluid path and the controller automates the diversion valve position for the diversion valve unit based on a monitored wireline speed or a monitored wireline tension for a wireline unit.

Automated diversion valve control for pump down operations

A method of correcting a downhole speed of a tool string moving in a wellbore. In some implementations, the method includes obtaining a downhole tool speed with an accelerometer, moving the tool string past at least two casing collars, calculating the average tool speed over the interval between collars, and comparing the downhole tool speed as calculated using the data from the accelerometer to the average tool speed calculated based on the time and the interval between the casing collars, determining a correction factor, and determining a corrected downhole tool speed. A system includes a casing collar locator, an accelerometer, and a processor adapted to compare the downhole tool speed calculated using data from the accelerometer to the average downhole tool speed calculated using the time and casing collar location, determine a correction factor and determine a corrected downhole tool speed.
