A cutting tool incorporates a body terminating in cutting edges distal from a chuck mount and having an axial bore for reduced mass to raise the natural frequency of the tool. In certain of the embodiments, the body is preformed from a steel or carbide blank into a cylindrical pipe forming the hollow bore prior to grinding of the cutting edges. Filling of the bore with a light weight polymer to further absorb vibration can also be employed.

Increased process damping via mass reduction for high performance milling

A method of predicting distortion in a workpiece may include measuring residual stress induced in a coupon surface of a plate coupon by a selected manufacturing operation. The induced residual stress measurements may be fitted to a curve shape function. A moment coefficient may be calculated based upon the fitted induced residual stress measurements. The moment coefficient may be used to calibrate a stress function and corresponding stress magnitude. The calibrated stress function may be applied to a model of the workpiece such that the distortion of the workpiece may be predicted.

In one advantageous embodiment, an apparatus may comprise a housing having a first end, a second end, and a number of dimensions. Also, the apparatus may comprise a inner cylinder extending through the housing from the first end to the second end in which the inner cylinder is configured to receive a tool at the first end and is configured to a engage a tool holder at the second end in which the number of dimensions of the housing is configured to reduce vibrations during a machining operation.

Machining apparatus with reduced cutter vibrations

A fixture is used to mount an angled machine head on a machine tool. The fixture includes a base adapted to be mounted on the machine tool, and a collar for holding the angled machine head. The collar is mounted for rotation on the base and allows the angled machine head to be rotated to any of a plurality of rotational positions. The collar may be selectively locked to the base to fix the position of the angled machine head.
