Optical imaging apparatus and method of operating the same, where the apparatus includes optics configured to provide a first optical channel and a second optical channel through the optics, a two-dimensional image sensor optically coupled to the optics, the two-dimensional image sensor configured to receive a first optical signal from the first optical channel and provide a two-dimensional image, a one-dimensional image sensor assembly optically coupled to the optics and sharing a same line of sight, the one-dimensional image sensor assembly configured to receive a second optical signal from the second optical channel at a one-dimensional image sensor therein to provide an image with an overlapping coverage area in the two-dimensional image, and at least one processor configured to operate the two-dimensional image sensor and the one-dimensional image sensor assembly.

A method for vicarious spatial characterization of a remote sensor system. The method includes detecting, via the remote sensor system, radiation reflected from at least one body of water corresponding to a plurality of point reflector images, selecting a set of point reflector images from the plurality of point reflector images, the selected set of point reflector images corresponding to sub-pixel point reflector images, analyzing the selected set of point reflector images by executing an algorithm for fitting the point reflector images to obtain a point spread function of the remote sensor system, and determining a spatial characteristic of the remote sensor system based on the point spread function.

Vicarious calibration using solar glint over water

A system simulates hyperspectral imaging data or multispectral imaging data for a simulated sensor. Blackbody radiance of real-world thermal imagery data is computed using a Planck function, which generates a simulated spectral hypercube. Spectral emissivity data for background materials are multiplied by a per-pixel weighting function, which generates weighted spectral emissivity data. The simulated spectral hypercube is multiplied by the weighted spectral emissivity data, which generates background data in the simulated spectral hypercube. Simulated targets are inserted the background data using the Planck function. The simulated spectral hypercube is modified, and then it is used to estimate a mission measure of effectiveness of the simulated sensor.

Synthesis of thermal hyperspectral imagery

Aspects and examples are generally directed to broadband optical systems and methods for collecting a wide spectral range of electromagnetic radiation with a single window optical assembly. In one example, a broadband optical system includes a segmented window positioned to receive electromagnetic radiation, the segmented window including at least a first segment formed from a first material and a second segment formed from a second material, the first segment being configured to transmit a first spectral band of the electromagnetic radiation along an optical path and the second segment being configured to transmit a second spectral band of the electromagnetic radiation along the optical path. The broadband optical system may include an optical de-multiplexer configured to spatially separate the first and second spectral bands, and foreoptics interposed between the segmented window and the optical de-multiplexer to direct the electromagnetic radiation from the segmented window to the optical de-multiplexer.

Broadband optical systems and methods

An interferometer system comprising an optical detector including a substrate and a two-dimensional array of pixels disposed on the substrate is provided. The interferometer system may further comprise an interferometer disposed proximate the optical detector without an optical element between the interferometer and the optical detector. The interferometer may include a first plate positioned proximate the substrate and extending over the two-dimensional array of pixels, a second plate spaced apart from the first plate, the first and second plates defining an optical gap between them, and at least one actuatable spacer positioned between the first plate and the second plate and configured to space apart the first and second plates from one another and to selectively alter a thickness of the optical gap.

Proximity focus imaging interferometer

Systems for generating uniform monochromatic electromagnetic radiation that include an electromagnetic radiation source and a bandpass filter assembly to filter electromagnetic radiation emitted by the electromagnetic radiation source. The systems also include an optical integrating sphere to receive the filtered electromagnetic radiation and to uniformly scatter the filtered electromagnetic radiation within the optical integrating sphere, wherein the optical integrating sphere comprises an output to emit the uniformly scattered, filtered electromagnetic radiation.

Variable monochromatic uniform calibration source

A laser-based target detection system applicable for search-and-rescue type operations takes into account a plurality of optical attributes in the energy delivered to, and received from, a target-containing area so as to enhance effectiveness. In addition to analyzing the returned optical signature for sufficient energy reflected by a potential target at a primary laser wavelength, the system also senses the target's effect on a supplemental optical attribute, and only when sufficient amplitude at the primary wavelength is detected in conjunction with a substantial effect on the supplemental optical attribute is a valid target confirmed. In one embodiment, the supplemental optical attribute is amplitude at a wavelength other than the primary wavelength, with the system preferably looking for a high degree of attenuation at the non-primary wavelength. In an alternative embodiment, polarization is used as the supplemental optical attribute, with the system preferably looking for change of orientation in the return optical signature.
