A dowel assembly for a furniture system provides a fastener usable in assembling various components in a furniture system. The dowel may be employed to define the relationship between first and second components of the furniture system, such as the relationship between adjoining planar surfaces of adjacent furniture panels. The dowel is fitted with a cam such that the cam provides a non-uniform radius at the interface between the dowel and one of the components. Through selective positioning of the cam about the longitudinal axis of the dowel, the interface between components of the furniture system may be selectively adjusted to ensure flush alignment of contiguous surfaces.

A furniture system which is readily reconfigurable into a variety of work surface configurations and shelving configurations as well as additional component configurations associated therewith so as to readily adapt the furniture system to the specific needs of an office area. The system includes a system of brackets which readily accommodates mounting of work surfaces at a variety of elevations, and a shelving system which maintains shelves of different materials and thicknesses so that the top surfaces thereof align in a common plane.

Furniture system

A table having a worksurface mounted to and cantilevered forwardly from a pair of telescopic height-adjustable legs. Each leg includes an upper elongate tubular leg part which is fixed to the table top adjacent a rear corner thereof. This upper tubular leg part preferably projects upwardly at least a limited vertical extent above the upper surface of the top and terminates in a visible top cap. The upper leg part projects downwardly below the table top and is telescoped onto and around a lower elongate leg part which projects upwardly into the upper leg part. This lower leg part in turn has the lower end thereof fixed to a support foot which bears on a support surface such as a floor. A height-adjusting mechanism projects interiorly of and generally vertically between the upper and lower leg parts.

A method of using a work station having separate front and back tops having separate powered drive arrangements for permitting independent height adjustment. A controller, which is programmed by an operator, permits storage of a number of predetermined height locations each defining distinct heights for both tops. The operator effects programmed movement of the tops to predetermined height locations for predetermined times and in a predetermined sequence, with the rear top moving initially and the front top moving thereafter.

Method of controlling height adjustable work station

A work station, particularly for supporting a computer, having separate front and back tops having separate powered drive arrangements for permitting independently height adjustment. The drive arrangement includes a separate drive motor associated with each top, with the motors being controlled by a controller, such as a microprocessor. The controller is preferably controlled by an operator using a portable keypad control which can be positioned on one of the tops. The controller can be programmed by the operator to permit storage of a number of predetermined height locations each defining distinct heights for both tops.
