The present invention relates to a methods and composition in which a D-form or retro-inversopilin peptide, optionally having a polyethylene glycol moiety covalently attached to the peptide, is bound to a substrate. The disclosed methods and composition are useful for reducing the frictional coefficient, inhibiting biofilm formation by non-bacteria, for reducing the inflammatory response to a material, for reducing corrosion of metals, and in biosensor applications.

The composition comprises a peptide based on the C-terminal receptor binding domain oftype IV pilin, which binds to an abiotic surface (e.g., steel, plastic) with high affinity and prevents binding of a variety ofstrains to the surface. The inventive composition represents a non-toxic inhibitor for biofilm formation, particularly on an abiotic surface, which is responsible for a large number of problematic diseases and massive economic losses. The inventive method is useful as a safe and environmentally friendly means of modifying a surface of a variety of biomedical, nanotechnological, and biotechnological devices or articles.

The invention relates to the use of constrained coiled-coil polypeptides to mimic &#x3b1;-helical structural elements of native proteins. These constrained peptidyl mimetics are used to generate and/or identify ligands which selectively bind the &#x3b1;-helical segment contained in the native protein.

Polypeptide compositions formed using a coiled-coil template and methods of use

The apparatus includes an electrode substrate coated with a high-dielectric hydrocarbon-chain monolayer, and having ligands attached to the exposed monolayer surface. Binding of a receptor to the monolayer-bound ligand, and the resultant perturbation of the monolayer structure, causes ion-mediated electron flow across the monolayer. In one embodiment, the monolayers have a coil-coil heterodimer embedded therein, one subunit of which is attached to the substrate, and the second of which carries the ligand at the monolayer surface.
