An improved treadmill control system which adjusts the speed of a moving tread belt to follow user motions. Equipment includes a tread base supporting a moving tread belt upon which a user can run or walk, a motor assembly and motor driver to move the tread belt, a plurality of foot sensors, a tread belt motion sensor, a measurement system to estimate user motion based on foot and tread belt sensor signals, and a motor controller to adjust motor assembly speed based on estimates of user motion. The system is capable of making improved user motion estimates and of using them to provide improved belt speed control. In one embodiment, user position, speed, and acceleration are estimated at each user footfall while estimates are continually revised between footfalls. In one embodiment, foot sensors are capacitive proximity sensors which are effective, fully concealable, and economical.

User footfall sensing control system for treadmill exercise machines

A navigation system is provided for offering navigational assistance to a mobile user. The navigation system receives GPS position information signals which are processed to determine current position latitude and longitude coordinates and direction of travel. A destination database includes a plurality of categorized destinations and corresponding destination position coordinates pertaining to the destinations. The destination database is stored on an interfacable memory card and contains menu categories and subcategories for classifying the destinations and additional text information pertaining to the destinations. User selectable menu controls enable the user to sequence through the menu of categories and destinations and select a desired destination. This is easily accomplished by rotating a rotary pushbutton to view category and destination selections and depressing the rotary pushbutton to select the selection shown. A processor compares the current position coordinates with the position coordinates of the selected destination and determines a distance and a straight-line direction from the current position to the selected destination. The processor may also sort considered destinations by radial distance and within a limited search zone. A display displays the distance and a direction pointing indicator for showing the direction from the current position to the selected destination. In one embodiment, the navigation system is integrated with an audio entertainment system and shares a common display and housing.

Mapless GPS navigation system with sortable destinations and zone

Such data could be provided for a period of time set to expire. User selectable menu controls enable the user to sequence through the menu of categories and destinations and select a desired destination. Mapless GPS navigation system with user modifiable data base

An audio entertainment/navigation system with updated time readings is provided especially for a mobile user. The navigation system receives GPS position information signals which are processed to determine current position latitude and longitude coordinates and direction of travel. A destination database includes a plurality of categorized destinations and corresponding destination position coordinates pertaining to the destinations. The destination database is stored on an interfacable memory card. A time change database is also included which contains time-related information such as time zone boundaries and special time change rules such as daylight saving time. The time-related information may be loaded into the system from an interfacable memory card. A time of day as referenced to a reference time and the date are also computed from the GPS signals. The time and date are compared with the time-related information so as to determine a current updated time and date which is used to periodically update the clock and may be displayed on a display. Also, a user may obtain a current time and date reading for a remote destination by entering the destination name or coordinates into the system.
