Disclosed are colorants comprising a colored laked complex of (a) a chromogen molecule having at least one (i) carboxylic acid group, (ii) carboxylate group, (iii) sulfonic acid group, (iv) sulfonate group, or (v) combination thereof, and (b) a polymer, said chromogen molecule and said polymer each being complexed to (c) a metal. Also disclosed are phase change inks containing the colorants.

Colorants

A solid ink includes an ink vehicle that is solid at room temperature, including a ketone wax and at least one resin selected from a branched amide resin, a branched urea resin, and a branched urethane resin, a colorant, and optional additives.

A method of operating a printer turns off a support structure heater when the printer enters standby mode. The print head is then moved away from an intermediate transfer surface supported by a support structure. Heat settings used to heat a print head are then varied to heat the print head and the support structure. Another method of operating a printer turns off a support structure heater when the printer enters standby mode and holds a print head adjacent to an intermediate transfer surface while the printer is in standby mode.

Faster warm-up, lower energy, and quieter modes for solid ink printers

Rhodamine, thio-rhodamine, acridine, and carbopyronin compounds of the formula wherein M is either (1) a metal ion having a positive charge of +y wherein y is an integer which is at least 2, said metal ion being capable of forming a compound with at least two chromogen moieties, or (2) a metal-containing moiety capable of forming a compound with at least two chromogen moieties, z is an integer representing the number of chromogen moieties associated with the metal and is at least 2, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, a, b, c, d, Y, and z are as defined herein, Qis a COOgroup or a SOgroup, A is an organic anion, and CA is either a hydrogen atom or a cation associated with all but one of the Qgroups.

Colorant compounds

Disclosed is a phase change ink composition including an ink carrier and a colorant, said ink being suitable for use in an indirect printing process wherein the ink is jetted from a printhead onto a heated intermediate transfer member and subsequently transferred from the intermediate transfer member to a final recording substrate, wherein: (a) the ink exhibits the characteristic of being jetted from the printhead onto the intermediate transfer member when the ink at a temperature of about 125&#xb0; C. or lower; (b) the ink exhibits the characteristic of being jetted without purging from a printer maintained at a standby temperature of about 100&#xb0; C. or lower; and (c) the ink has a cohesive failure temperature of at least about 56&#xb0; C.

Phase change inks

Processes for preparing phase change inks comprising admixing (a) a phase change ink carrier; (b) a colorant of the formula or mixtures thereof, wherein M, z, A, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, a, b, c, d, Y, Q, Q, A, and CA are as defined herein; and (c) a metal salt of the formula (M)(A)of which the metal portion Mis either a metal ion having positive charge +v, a metal-containing moiety, or a mixture thereof, and Ais an anion having negative charge &#x2212;w, wherein Mand Mcan be the same as or different from each other, wherein Aand Acan be the same as or different from each other, said admixing occurring at a temperature at which the ink carrier is a liquid.

Processes for preparing phase change inks

Compounds of the formula wherein M is either (1) a metal ion having a positive charge of +p wherein p is an integer which is at least 2, said metal ion being capable of forming a compound with at least two chromogen moieties, or (2) a metal-containing moiety capable of forming a compound with at least two chromogen moieties, z is an integer representing the number of chromogen moieties associated with the metal and is at least 2, and R, R, R, R, R, R, R, a, b, c, d, Y, Q, A, and CA are as defined herein.
